Chapter 684: Ling Zhaixing Appears

~8 min read 1,477 words

The figure stood with his back to Jiang Feng, shoulders slightly tensed, wrapped tightly in a Night Cloak, exposing only a pair of eyes.

The eyes glowed coldly in the moonlight, like two poison‑tempered knives, thrusting straight at Jiang Feng.

He gave no answer to Jiang Feng.

Hatred boiled in those eyes, like a pot of scorching oil splashed onto Jiang Feng's face.

"Why did you save him?"

The man's voice was hoarse, as if each word were being forced out between his teeth.

"Why is the one who saved him you?"

Jiang Feng stared at him, silent for a moment.

Since seeing Jiangnan Wang's injuries, he had been certain that the mastermind was the one before him… Ling Zhaixing.

He let out a lingering sigh.

"You've been wounded too…"

"I'll take you away first. Some matters I will explain to you later."

The man's eyes suddenly sharpened, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

"I will kill Jiangnan Wang today; no one dare stand in my way!"

He tugged forcefully at the black cloak draped over his shoulders and turned to leave.

He moved swiftly; with a single step, his body leapt two zhang away.

But Jiang Feng was faster.

Jiang Feng barely moved; his whole form slipped up silently like a leaf lifted by the wind, then raised his hand and lightly tapped the man's back of the neck.

The man's body stiffened for an instant, then collapsed like a puppet with its strings cut.

Jiang Feng caught him, slinging the man onto his shoulder, glanced toward the direction of Jiangnan Wangfu, then looked again at the unconscious figure on his shoulder, his gaze complicated.

He lingered no longer; with a flicker of his form, he vanished into the night.

Ling Zhaixing was roused by a series of dull pains in her chest.

When she opened her eyes, she saw a familiar room.

She froze for a moment, then struggled violently to sit up.

The wound in her chest was tugged, a surge of excruciating pain shot through her like electricity; she let out a muffled groan and collapsed back onto the soft pillow.

"Don't move."

Jiang Feng's voice came from beside her; Ling Zhaixing turned her head and saw Jiang Feng seated on a chair by the Window, his gaze lightly resting on her.

Ling Zhaixing clenched her teeth, propped herself up inch by inch with her arms, and leaned against the headboard.

She lowered her head to glance at her chest, where fresh white gauze was wrapped, the scent of medicine strong, carrying a sharp, bitter herbal aroma.

She reached out to touch it, but Jiang Feng stopped her with a look.

"The wound on you, I've applied medicine to it."

Jiang Feng placed the teacup on the table, his tone utterly calm.

"Rest well these days; don't touch water."

Ling Zhaixing's chest rose and fell violently.

She lifted her gaze to Jiang Feng, the hatred in her eyes deeper than when she stood outside the Prince's Residence walls last night.

Her lips trembled, her voice quivered, yet each word was enunciated clearly.

"Why?"

She asked.

"Are you going to intervene to save Jiangnan Wang?"

Her voice rose sharply, hoarse, bearing a sharpness that had been suppressed for so long it finally cracked.

"You know full well he destroyed my Sect!"

The last four words were almost shouted.

She clenched her fist into the bedding, knuckles paling, something whirring in her eye sockets, yet she bit down hard, refusing to let it fall.

She was grateful to Jiang Feng; last time Jiang Feng acted, she could leave Jiangcheng smoothly. She had intended that after returning to kill Jiangnan Wang this time, she would spend the rest of her life by Jiang Feng's side, repaying him in her own way.

But why, in the end, was it Jiang Feng who shattered her hope of revenge!

Jiang Feng did not avert his gaze.

He stared at Ling Zhaixing, silent for a long while.

"You cannot kill Jiangnan Wang; now Jiangnan Wang is acting on my behalf."

Ling Zhaixing's eyes widened sharply.

Jiang Feng continued.

"As for matters concerning your Sect…"

His voice lowered a bit, bearing a heaviness rarely seen in him.

"Rest assured, I will give you an answer later."

Ling Zhaixing was stunned for a moment upon hearing this.

Then she let out a laugh.

The laugh was brief, squeezed out of her nose, carrying an indefinable sarcasm. She lifted the corner of her mouth briefly, then quickly withdrew it, leaning against the headboard, her gaze sliding from Jiang Feng's face to the draped corner of the quilt at the foot of the bed.

"Doing it for you?"

She repeated those four words, her voice light, as if speaking of something unrelated to her.

Then she laughed again, this time a bit longer, the ending slightly trembling.

"Jiang Feng, you tell me, Jiangnan Wang is doing it for you?"

Jiang Feng said nothing.

Ling Zhaixing inhaled deeply.

She placed her hand on the bed, palm pressing the Quilt, pushed down forcefully, then arched her back, trying to stand up.

Her chest Injury was strained by the motion, a shallow red seeped under the gauze, she frowned, but clenched her teeth and kept going.

"You stay lying."

Jiang Feng's voice lowered; she had already stood up, took two steps to the bedside, and reached out to support her arm.

Ling Zhaixing abruptly brushed his hand away.

The motion was wide, pulling at the wound; she trembled violently, fine cold sweat beaded on her forehead, yet she made no sound.

She lifted her head, looking up at Jiang Feng standing at the bedside.

"Let go."

She said.

"Don't touch me."

Her voice was low, yet each word seemed ground from the base of her teeth, hard and tasting of iron rust.

Jiang Feng withdrew his hand, standing there watching her.

Ling Zhaixing braced against the bed rail, slowly moved both legs out of the Quilt, Foot on the floor.

She was barefoot, Foot toes on the slightly cool blue bricks, she swayed briefly, then quickly steadied herself.

She lowered her head, watching her own Foot tips, remained silent for a few breaths, then raised her head to look at Jiang Feng.

The hint of sarcastic laughter at the corner of her Mouth had completely disappeared, leaving only a crisp, decisive resolve.

"Jiang Feng."

Her voice steadied, bearing a faint hint of death.

"No matter what, I will definitely kill Jiangnan Wang."

Her eyes stared unblinking at Jiang Feng.

"No one can protect him."

"If you don't want to be my enemy, then don't meddle in this matter any longer."

She stopped there, the distance between the two was less than two steps.

She looked at Jiang Feng, the complex layer in her gaze sank little by little, until only the thinnest cold edge like that of a blade remained.

"Otherwise, I will never Forgiveness you."

After that sentence fell, the room was quiet for a long time.

Jiang Feng looked at Ling Zhaixing.

Jiang Feng's gaze shifted from her face to the expanding bloodstain on her Shoulders, his eyebrows twitched imperceptibly.

"Your Injury has split open."

He said.

Ling Zhaixing did not lower her head to look at her Shoulders, nor did she respond to his words.

She just stood there, gaze locked on Jiang Feng's face, as if waiting for an answer.

Jiang Feng was silent for a moment.

"You lie back first…"

His Tone showed no ripple.

"Heal your Injury."

Ling Zhaixing's Mouth pursed slightly, but did not move.

Jiang Feng stepped forward, Ling Zhaixing Instinctively retreated half a step, her back struck the bed post, producing a muffled thud.

Jiang Feng stopped before her, raised his hand to fetch a clean gauze from the nearby shelf, glanced down at the red seeping from her Shoulders, then handed the gauze to her.

"Press it yourself."

He said.

Ling Zhaixing stared at the gauze for two seconds, then reached out to take it, pressing it onto her own Shoulders.

When the gauze touched the Injury, she gasped sharply, but made no sound, only pressed hard, her knuckles whitening.

Jiang Feng stepped back, returned to the Window side Chair and sat down.

"Jiangnan Wang cannot die for now, but later, your Sect's affairs…"

He spoke again, his voice lower than before.

"I guarantee, he will give you an explanation."

Ling Zhaixing's hand pressing her Shoulders paused briefly.

She lifted her eyes toward Jiang Feng, the sharpness in her gaze did not recede, yet the underlying thing was a bit loose.

"Heal your Injury first…"

"When your Injury heals, I will tell you the whole story. Then you decide whether to kill him; I will not stop you."

As those words left, Ling Zhaixing's gaze locked onto Jiang Feng.

"You'd better not deceive me!"
