Chapter 82: Will you go after her? Let her be my aunt

~6 min read 1,171 words

She reminded Aunt Li and Xin Xin to fasten their seatbelts, and Meng Shutang started the car.

On the road, Xin Xin asked Meng Shutang, "Mom, I haven't seen Uncle for several days; can you let Uncle come over to our house to play?"

Meng Shutang looked in the rearview mirror, her face soft, "Uncle Lu Shenyang is on a business trip; when he returns, we can invite him home, okay?"

Xin Xin nodded obediently.

In her little mind, Gu Yunci's face resurfaced; Lu Shenyang is not in Jiangcheng, so inviting him home would also be fine.

"Mom, then can we invite another uncle?"

Meng Shutang's brows twitched, "Hmm?"

"The one I met at the airport before, he looks really handsome, smells sweet, just like the person in my dreams…"

For some reason, in Xin Xin's sparkling eyes and soft tone, Meng Shutang only felt Gu Yunci's presence.

"Can you invite him to our house? I really like him, I'll share my little cookies with him."

Xin Xin kept talking, but Meng Shutang suddenly pulled the car over to the roadside, unbuckled her seatbelt, and turned to look at Xin Xin.

"Xin Xin, what does that uncle you just mentioned look like?"

Xin Xin had never seen her mother so serious; instinctively, she knew her mother didn't like that uncle.

Seeing her nervous, Meng Shutang held her hand, "Tell me his name."

Xin Xin shook her head, "I don't know."

Aunt Li saw this and quickly intervened, "Miss Meng, the person Xin Xin mentioned might be a gentleman who went to Japan; he has a daughter about the same age as Xin Xin."

They settled in Japan, and while waiting at the airport we chatted a few more sentences.

I see, Meng Shutang let out a sigh of relief.

She shook Xin Xin's hand and said, "It's okay, let's go home."

But after entering, while Xin Xin wasn't looking, Meng Shutang instructed Aunt Li, "Aunt Li, please don't let Xin Xin have unsupervised contact with any man other than Minister Lu."

Aunt Li nodded, "I'll remember that, Miss Meng."

Qian Shui Wan.

Gu Yunci held a glass of water, standing before Mother Zhang, "Are you sure you saw her pulling a little girl?"

Being asked so formally by Gu Yunci, Mother Zhang became a bit uncertain.

"It was then, from a distance," her eyes were scattered, seeing double, "but it was blurry, I saw her holding a child."

Gu Yunci nodded, "I understand."

But he didn't intend to go find Meng Shutang right then; he couldn't get any answers, so he had to wait for Qin Zheng's investigation.

He turned and went to the children's room, where Song Yilin was packing a backpack.

This morning, Mother Zhang and Old Zhang took him there.

Gu Yunci casually inquired about his situation, "What did you learn at kindergarten today?"

"We don't learn things; you should ask what we played," Song Yilin said in a babyish voice, but enunciated very clearly, showing the Gu family trait.

Gu Yunci lounged lazily on the sofa, one hand propping his chin, his gaze drifting out the window, his eyes lazy, "What did you play today?"

Song Yilin replied, "Teacher Xing first let us play Lego for a while, then took us out to dance, also taught us English, and we recited poems."

After a pause, "Later, I played with a little girl; her name is Xin Xin."

The man usually let things go in one ear and out the other, with no intention of listening to Song Yilin, but hearing the name Xin Xin made his eyebrows jump sharply.

He got up, came to Song Yilin's side, sat opposite him with a straight face, "What did you say? Who did you play with today? Xin Xin?"

Song Yilin knew Gu Yunci didn't care about what he had just said, but seeing Gu now caring about him, his little face lit up instantly, his babyish voice growing more enthusiastic.

"Hmm, I told you about her yesterday; she just transferred to our class.

She's really pretty, with two dimples."

A sharp glint appeared in Gu Yunci's eyes, "Little nephew, from today onward, I'll be the one picking you up and dropping you off."

The next day.

Gu Yunci took Song Yilin to kindergarten, thinking he would see Xin Xin in the morning.

But he arrived early and waited until eight, yet still didn't see her.

He stopped waiting; having business at the company, he left.

In the afternoon, dismissal time came early at kindergarten; Gu Yunci, tied up by a corporate meeting, couldn't leave, so Old Zhang took over.

Song Yilin, displeased by Gu Yunci's slip of the tongue, cried and refused to get into the car when Old Zhang tried to pull him in.

Teacher Xing saw this and brought Song Yilin back.

When Meng Shutang came to pick up Xin Xin, the two children were still playing together.

Xin Xin generously introduced to Song Yilin, "Song Yilin, this is my mother."

Song Yilin looked at Meng Shutang as she stood up, "Wow, your mother is so beautiful!"

The little cutie's babyish words made everyone laugh.

Meng Shutang didn't rush them, stayed to play; Song Yilin was very curious, always most interested in the next toy.

Usually in such cases others would complain or criticize, but Meng Shutang didn't.

She patiently taught him the "return-to-place principle", meaning put one down, take one; if done well, she'll reward him next time.

Each time he succeeded, she praised him, saying his memory was good; she said it once and he remembered.

Beautiful Song Yilin's eyes curved into little crescents, hopping around cutely.

He wasn't upset about Gu Yunci breaking his word, and he took Meng Shutang's hand and left the campus.

The former Old Zhang had resigned; the current one didn't know Meng Shutang.

After getting Song Yilin into the car and leaving, Meng Shutang held Xin Xin's hand and went home.

In the evening, Song Yilin complained that Gu Yunci didn't keep his word, "You promised to come pick me up."

Gu Yunci apologized earnestly, "I was wrong." The work schedule had been arranged half a month in advance; he checked before getting off work, and picking him up after school for the coming week would be tough.

"How about this — I'll only drop you off, not pick you up, okay?"

Song Yilin put both hands on his hips. "No."

Unable to coax him, Gu Yunci stopped trying and stood up.

Song Yilin suddenly hugged his leg. "Uncle, I love you the most."

Gu Yunci looked down at him. "That's more like it."

Song Yilin looked up, wide innocent little eyes blinking. "Uncle, I saw Xin Xin's mommy today. She's so pretty and so gentle. Why don't you go pursue her? Let her be my aunt."

Gu Yunci shook his head.

He loved only Meng Shutang; there was no room for anyone else in his heart.

"Why? She smells really nice."

Gu Yunci: "…Grown-up matters. You wouldn't understand."
