Chapter 142: Finding Zhu Yun
Looking at the water with a layer of gray floating in the bowl before her, Si Rong could not help but recall Jiang Cheng's assessment of her.
"A pain in the neck."
One look at this bowl and it was clear it contained some strange, unidentifiable things.
Unless she were blind or had lost her mind, she would never drink it.
"Nainai, since this water is so auspicious and important, it would be the same if you, as the great-grandmother, drank it. You should drink it instead!"
Si Rong said softly.
Old Madam Jiang:...
This daughter-in-law of Jiang Cheng's was truly ignorant!
Was it easy for her, at her age, to work so hard and worry for her?
She had climbed mountains and waded through ditches, and now that she had gone through the trouble of getting this water for her, she wouldn't even drink it.
She was already forty years old; it wasn't easy for an old hen to lay eggs, and wouldn't giving birth to a son bring glory to her own face?
"Drink it since I told you to!"
Old Madam Jiang urged; if drinking it could make the child in Si Rong's belly turn into two big, fat great-grandsons, she would have drunk it long ago.
She practically wanted to pry Si Rong's mouth open and pour the water in.
But there was no chance at all; her useless grandson snatched the bowl of water directly and splashed it onto the cement floor of the courtyard.
Watching her hard work being fed entirely to the Earth God, Old Madam Jiang could not control her emotions and sat on the ground, crying.
She cried while slapping the ground, pointing at Jiang Cheng and cursing, "You unfilial descendant! I did this for your own good, yet you dared to spill my Fu Water, you rotten-hearted wretch!"
"Go back to the village if you want to howl!" Hu Qian knew what she was up to again the moment she heard "Fu Water," "I've already told you, just mind your own eating and drinking, why must you be so annoying!"
She glared at Jiang Aiguo, "Hurry up and send her back!"
"You heartless woman!" The old lady immediately howled even louder, "I don't know what kind of evil our Jiang Family committed to marry a jinx like you. You aren't even worried that there are no male descendants in the house; I think you're hoping my son ends up without an heir!"
"What do you all know? That Fu Water is a treasure, a good treasure that can give you a big grandson. As long as she drinks it, Si Rong will definitely give birth to a boy!"
She grew angrier the more she thought about it and simply started rolling on the ground.
"Can't others be looking out for your precious daughter-in-law? I said no money if it doesn't work, pay only if it works..."
"I see you all just despise me. I don't want to live anymore, I might as well just die..."
She made a scene like this.
Hu Qian methodically arranged for Wu Shen to tidy things up.
Jiang Cheng turned around and switched on the television, turning the volume to the maximum.
It covered Old Madam Jiang's voice very well.
Her throat was parched from crying, yet no one paid her any mind.
In the end, she had no choice but to awkwardly sit up herself. Jiang Aiguo sighed and helped her up from the ground, "Have you made enough of a scene? I'm taking you back to the village."
Old Madam Jiang:...
Too angry to speak.
What kind of wretch did she give birth to? Other people's sons knew how to side with their mothers, but the one she gave birth to stood against her at every turn alongside his wife.
The farce ended, and when Si Rong and the others went home, they brought Wu Shen's younger sister back with them.
They temporarily called her Wu Ma.
Wu Ma was younger than Wang Ma, and she was honest and hardworking; there was nothing that needed extra teaching from Wang Ma, who only told her about some of Si Rong's daily habits.
Wu Ma took note of them all in her heart.
Within two days, she had adapted to life in the Jiang Family. Wang Ma was someone who couldn't stay idle, and whenever she had a moment, she would start making clothes for the baby in Si Rong's belly.
Si Rong was due in the dead of winter, so they had to prepare plenty of cotton-padded clothes, small swaddling blankets, and diapers.
These things required great care to prepare.
Si Rong watched with great interest; she liked this feeling of preparing things for the baby to welcome them.
"Wang Ma, let me try!"
Si Rong watched Wang Ma threading the needle, looking very relaxed.
Wang Ma smiled and handed the needle and the small cotton pants to her.
Si Rong only tried for a moment before she pricked her finger and drew blood.
Some things really were easier said than done.
Wang Ma hurriedly found a bandage and put it on for her.
"Tai-tai, you should just rest, otherwise I'll always be on edge."
Watching the little girl she had raised bleed was even more painful than bleeding herself.
"Then I'll leave it to you, Wang Ma!"
Si Rong then lay on the rattan chair, still intending to read, when Ming Zi arrived in a flurry, bringing someone with her.
Seeing the limping old man behind her, Si Rong roughly guessed his identity.
Zhu Yun; she hadn't expected them to reunite like this after several decades.
"Rongrong, I'm dying of thirst!" Ming Zi shouted as soon as she entered the door.
As soon as she finished speaking, Wu Ma had already nimbly handed her a glass of water.
Ming Zi drank it in one gulp, "There, I've brought the person to you."
"Thank you for your hard work."
"How will you thank me?"
"How about a Western meal?"
"That'll do, plus a Cantonese meal," Ming Zi added.
"No problem."
Si Rong smiled; it seemed Shen Qinghe was doing quite well, as Ming Zi had been looking very healthy lately.
"Then you go ahead and chat with this person! I'm leaving first, there's a pile of things to do at the company."
After seeing Ming Zi out the door, Si Rong returned to the courtyard.
"Mr. Zhu, please sit."
Si Rong gestured for Wu Ma to bring him a stool.
Zhu Yun cowered, not daring to look her in the eye.
"I, I'll just stand here." He had no face to sit.
"I have already investigated everything about what happened back then; thanks to you, Mr. Zhu, the label of being infertile has followed me for nearly twenty years. Tell me, how should I thank you?" Si Rong's tone was unhurried, her emotions more stable than she had imagined.
Originally, she had not wanted her child to hear of these sordid affairs, but there was no help for it; these matters were precisely the path she had traveled.
Moreover, this man Zhu Yun was a variable and had to be dealt with sooner rather than later.
Zhu Yun kept his mouth shut, merely hanging his head.
"It seems Mr. Zhu also knows that what you did was a guilty act, so you know you have no face to see anyone and dare not lift your head."
Si Rong suddenly sighed.
She stood up and walked in front of him, her protruding belly seeming to carry a sense of destiny at this moment.
Si Rong suddenly felt that not having given birth to Shen Lan's child was actually an incomparably correct thing.
She was now married to Jiang Cheng and was giving birth to a child belonging to the two of them; it was as if she had corrected the trajectory of her past life, meeting the right person and welcoming the right child.
From this perspective, Zhu Yun did not seem quite so hateful.
"Do you intend to remain silent forever?"
Zhu Yun suddenly looked up, revealing one blinded eye, and then knelt before her.
"I'm sorry," Zhu Yun apologized, full of guilt, "back then, I did something that wronged you."
"I will not forgive you."
Si Rong looked at him with a faint smile, "At that time, I endured a great deal of suffering because of my infertility. You don't know what it feels like for a woman to be cursed at as a hen that cannot lay eggs, nor will you understand the feeling of being unable to sleep at night because of one's own flaws."
"I brought you here today just to confirm a few things."
Zhu Yun lowered his head even further, "Please ask, I will certainly tell you everything I know."
