Chapter 239: She Also Misses Jiang Cheng
"Are you all doing well at the Junshuyuan these days?" Ming Zi asked.
Si Rong nodded while holding her phone, "The control here is quite strict; there are guard posts, and no personnel are allowed to enter or leave as they please."
"That's good," Ming Zi sighed, "The New Year is almost here, and I don't know how much longer the control will last. By the way, has Jiang Cheng called back?"
"I received a call from him last week to say he was safe. He didn't even have time to say a word to the two children before hanging up. I still don't know when he'll be back."
"Military men really have it hard," Ming Zi said, speaking of her own husband, "Xue Ming is likely very busy too. He also only called back to say a few words. Let's just wait for them properly at home."
"By the way, I ran into Sun Chanjuan when I went to stock up on groceries last time, and she even asked about you."
"Sun Chanjuan?" Si Rong couldn't pull this person from her memory for a moment, "Who is that?"
"Have you forgotten? Our college classmate. She's also from Huaiyang, though not in the same year as us. You even did her a favor," Ming Zi teased her, "Has your memory declined? Could it be that you've reached menopause?"
"We're the same age. If I've reached menopause, you must have too," Si Rong seemed to vaguely recall the Sun Chanjuan that Ming Zi mentioned, "Is that the pregnant senior student?"
"Rongrong, you finally remembered! That's the one! If you hadn't asked your second brother to drive her to the hospital back then, the child in her belly might not have survived. The son she gave birth to was even named by you!"
Si Rong remembered; she had named that child.
Lu Fei.
A gentleman of refined elegance.
She had just seen this name in her daughter's diary not long ago.
"What did she say when she mentioned me to you?" Si Rong asked.
"She, she's probably reached the age where she wants to be a mother-in-law. She said her husband's career is doing quite well now, and since you did her and her child a favor back then, she was asking me about your daughter, wanting to become in-laws with you!"
"Her son must be sixteen, right?" Si Rong calculated the time.
Ming Zi agreed, "I just gave her a perfunctory reply. Our Si Yu is still young, and besides, her Lu Family just owns a few hardware stores; she's quite good at trying to climb the social ladder!"
Si Rong didn't say anything. Only after hanging up the phone did she think that Sun Chanjuan was indeed quite good at climbing the social ladder.
Using the guise of a life-saving favor to try and arrange a marriage with her family?
What a loud, wishful calculation.
Keep dreaming!
On the third day of her diet, Jiang Siyu fainted.
She had just gotten out of bed and was washing up when she plunged headfirst into the sink, which scared Si Rong to death.
She called the military doctor.
Before the military doctor arrived, Jiang Siyu woke up. She looked at Si Rong with tears welling up, "Mom, I'm sorry."
To lose weight, she had been secretly dumping more than half of her meals every day.
Si Rong shed tears out of heartache, "Silly child, the one you're sorry to is yourself."
The military doctor arrived and diagnosed hypoglycemia and hypotension, advising her to increase her nutrition.
Si Rong had another good talk with her daughter.
The logic she had explained last time was something she had summarized over many years.
But for her daughter, who hadn't experienced those things and couldn't understand, it wasn't her fault.
"Do you think Mom is fat?" Si Rong asked her daughter.
Jiang Siyu shook her head, "Mom isn't fat; Mom is very beautiful."
If only she could be as thin as Mom.
"Mom liked to dance, so I was thinner and looked better when I was young," Si Rong told her daughter about her own first marriage, "Even though Mom was young, beautiful, and slim, that man still betrayed Mom, and he betrayed me constantly."
The past hurt was too deep, so Si Rong often replayed it in her heart.
At the beginning, Shen Lan and Li Xuan were indeed aiming for a marriage of deception.
But she had been completely ignorant and indulged in it.
Over these twenty years, if Shen Lan truly loved her as he later claimed, why did he keep jumping back and forth between her and Li Xuan?
It was nothing more than a fantasy of enjoying the blessings of both.
"Mom, that man is truly evil!" Jiang Siyu said indignantly.
"Siyu," Si Rong stroked her daughter's head, "Therefore, beauty and slimness are not the necessities of love; the unique you is."
"If someone loves you, they will love everything about you."
"If someone doesn't love you, then even if you possess the beauty of a fairy, it is useless."
Jiang Siyu nodded.
"Love is beautiful, but it is even more beautiful if it comes at the right time."
Si Rong thought for a moment, but still didn't tell her daughter about Sun Chanjuan.
Another half a month passed.
In the middle of the night, Si Rong received a call from Jiang Cheng.
"What's wrong?"
Si Rong felt a bit flustered.
On the other end, Jiang Cheng's voice was low, "Nothing, I just wanted to hear your voice."
"The children and I are doing very well at home, and Dad and Mom are also doing fine. How are things over there?" Si Rong's lips curled into a sweet smile; she knew Jiang Cheng missed her.
She missed Jiang Cheng too.
However, it wasn't convenient to say intimate things over the military phone.
"I'm doing quite well too."
But in reality, Jiang Cheng was currently running a high fever; he had been infected with the F Virus while executing a mission and was currently in quarantine.
People were dying every day, and he was very afraid.
It felt as if a countdown to his life had begun.
After the initial period of fear passed, he became very worried.
Si Rong was still waiting for him at home, their son and daughter were still so young, and both their parents were getting on in years; if he could never return, the burden of the family would fall entirely onto Si Rong's shoulders.
It would be very tiring.
Her shoulders were so thin and frail.
"Did something happen?" Si Rong felt that something was off, "Jiang Cheng, tell me the truth, otherwise I will be angry."
"There really is nothing wrong, I just finished a mission," Jiang Cheng endured his physical discomfort and chuckled twice, "Wife, did you miss me?"
He didn't want to worry about so much anymore; he just wanted to indulge himself for once.
Because he wanted to hear his wife say she missed him.
"I did." Si Rong instinctively felt something was wrong, she gripped her phone, "I did, I missed you so, so much, so you must take good care of yourself, I am waiting for you at home."
"A lot of things have happened at home recently, and they are all waiting for you to come back and discuss them."
Si Rong felt that what she said was a jumbled mess, but at this moment, she only hoped that Jiang Cheng, upon hearing this, would be able to return and rush to her no matter what.
The call on the other end cut off.
Si Rong held her phone and barely closed her eyes for the rest of the night.
Winter break was about to begin, and the school sent a notice to go to an open patch of woods to collect winter break assignments.
Si Rong put masks on both children.
"Remember on the way, don't take off your masks, and don't talk to people casually."
Not long after Jiang Sinian and the other two left the Family Quarters, they encountered an old woman wearing a mask.
"Good children, please help this old lady out, I dropped my keys and can't get back home, hurry and help me look for them!"
The old woman was hunched over and looked very pitiful.
