Chapter 70: The Shen Family Makes a Scene at the Military Base

~9 min read 1,707 words

Shen Lan did not speak, merely gazing at the snow-white ceiling.

Lingering in his mind was still the image of Si Rong and Jiang Cheng leaving side by side before he had fainted.

She had not glanced at him once.

She had thoroughly drawn a line between herself and him.

This thought made Shen Lan feel chilled to the bone.

"Shen Lan?" Li Xuan waved a hand in front of him. "Can you hear me speaking?"

"Where did you put the savings? We need to pay the medical bills!"

Shen Lan's eyes were vacant. "None."

"What? How could there be none?"

Li Xuan questioned him excitedly. "Then what about your salary from all these years?"

The Si Family is so wealthy; it's impossible that Si Rong would take the savings with her after a divorce, right?

That wouldn't fit her status as a daughter of the Si Family!

"It's all spent."

Shen Lan only felt that she was very materialistic; he was in this state now, yet she only talked about money.

Si Rong wouldn't be like that.

When he was with Si Rong, he had never once worried about money-related matters.

"What did you spend it on? How could it be all gone?"

Li Xuan found it simply unbelievable. Soon, the image of the expensive clothes Si Rong frequently changed into and her regular visits to beauty salons to maintain her skin and hair flashed through her mind. Could that woman have squandered it all?

Her expression was extremely ugly.

Some daughter of the Si Family—if she's so good at squandering money, why didn't she spend the Si Family's money?

Now that Shen Lan's money was all spent, what was she supposed to do about opening a dance class? And the two children—what about their schooling?

"Alright, my brother is already like this, and you're just saying useless things," Shen Yun scolded.

She asked Shen Lan, "Brother, who beat you into this state?"

It was truly terrifying; she had almost thought her brother was going to die this time.

"Jiang Cheng." Shen Lan spat out the name, filled with hatred.

Since Si Rong refused to have a change of heart, then Jiang Cheng shouldn't think about getting her so easily!

He wanted to see if Jiang Cheng, a dignified Division Commander in the military, could still remain in the service once news of him beating a County Magistrate got out.

"Jiang Cheng? Who is Jiang Cheng?"

Li Xuan narrowed her eyes. "I know, Si Rong's current partner."

He hit Shen Lan?

That would be truly wonderful.

In that case, Jiang Cheng would be finished.

"What? By what right did he hit you? Is there no justice left? A second-marriage son-in-law of the Si Family dares to be this arrogant?"

Shen Mu, who had been guarding the door, rushed in.

She had originally intended to wait at the door to greet the colleagues who came to visit her son in the hospital.

Last time, before he had divorced Si Rong, her son had received many gifts while hospitalized.

Why was it that this time, not a single person had come to visit?

It was truly outrageous.

"He dares to hit my son; I must make a scene at the military base!"

Li Xuan curled her lips, secretly stirring up trouble. "I'm just afraid the Si Family's influence is too great, and no one will be willing to give us justice."

"Then this old woman will move into the military base and not leave."

Shen Mu was thick-skinned; the people in the village called her a "rolling-knife meat."

In those years, if not for relying on this thick skin, how could a woman have managed to raise this son and daughter to adulthood?

Therefore, her thick skin had become her weapon.

Shen Yun, however, was thinking about her brother's position.

"If we make such a scene, will it affect my brother?"

Now that her brother no longer had the Si Family as his backing, if something were to happen, their whole family would have no hope left.

Not to mention she still wanted her brother to help promote her husband.

"It won't," Li Xuan deduced. "Your brother is the victim, and Jiang Cheng is the aggressor; it will only affect him."

To appease public anger, the military will definitely punish Jiang Cheng severely.

Although this matter was of no benefit to her, she was happy as long as Si Rong was miserable.

Perhaps letting her mother-in-law make such a scene would not only ruin Jiang Cheng but also allow them to demand a sum of compensation—killing two birds with one stone.

"Then I'm going now!" Shen Mu rolled up her sleeves, ready to head to the military base.

Li Xuan held her back. "Don't be in a hurry; this matter still needs to be planned."

Under Ming Zi's guidance, Si Rong went to sign up for her driver's license.

Subject One was the theory test.

The instructor gave her a small booklet to take back and read.

"Let's go! No need to read it yet; they're all common-sense questions."

Ming Zi pulled her along. "I heard a new spicy hot pot restaurant opened on Sanyuan Street; it sounds delicious just from the name! Let's go!"

Two strings of bright red dried chili peppers hung at the entrance of the spicy hotpot shop.

It was the standard decor style for a Sichuan-style shop.

"Mmm, it smells delicious just from the scent!"

After the two of them went inside, the shop assistant gave each of them a basin and a pair of tongs, letting them pick their own ingredients.

Si Rong usually ate little greasy food to maintain her figure, so she chose the bone broth.

Aside from tripe and beef, the ingredients were mostly vegetables.

There was no helping it; when one was young, one didn't gain weight no matter what one ate, but as one got older, the most important rule for maintaining one's figure was to control one's mouth.

Ming Zi, on the other hand, couldn't live without spice.

Yet no matter how much spicy food she ate, she didn't gain weight or get acne, which made people envious.

Once the spicy hotpot was cooked, Ming Zi asked her while eating, "By the way, the Lantern Festival is coming up soon, is Jiang Cheng still taking you to his house?"

"Probably not! The Lantern Festival is too close to the New Year."

Si Rong recalled what Jiang Cheng had said over the phone.

Since she had finished the New Year at the Jiang Family, Jiang Cheng had called her almost every day.

"His military unit is hosting a social mixer for the Lantern Festival, and he wants to take me with him then."

"What a clever plan," Ming Zi teased her with a grin, "Once the mixer runs late, he'll surely take the opportunity to bring you back to his dormitory."

Si Rong gave her a cross look, "Why do you always think of Jiang Cheng in that way?"

Although she was an adult, she was not shy.

But she still didn't like discussing such topics in public.

"It's not just thinking of him that way; all men are the same," Ming Zi said with an air of experience, "If he likes you, naturally he will have those kinds of thoughts about you."

She lowered her voice, "Last time you went to his house, didn't you sleep in the same room?"

"No, I slept in the room next to his."

"He's quite capable of restraint," Ming Zi laughed, "That time at Shen Lan and that little bitch's engagement party, I inadvertently saw the look in Jiang Cheng's eyes when he watched you. Do you know what that felt like?"

"What did it feel like?" Although she knew nothing good would come out of Ming Zi's mouth, Si Rong asked out of curiosity anyway.

"You were wearing a cheongsam that day, and his gaze seemed to be slowly peeling your cheongsam off; it was full of desire."

Ming Zi received a warning look, "Fine, I won't say any more, but if you two really do sleep together later, you must tell me."

"Don't they say that if a man has a particularly prominent nose, he's particularly strong in that department?"

"I think he must be much more capable than Shen Lan, that..."

Si Rong stuffed a hard-boiled egg directly into her mouth, "Shut your mouth!"

If Jiang Cheng were really that capable, why would he have not married after all these years?

Her mother's speculation was more reliable.

After coming out of the spicy hotpot shop, Ming Zi saw Si Rong all the way home.

Si Rong was just preparing to study some theory for her driving test when she heard a series of urgent knocks at the door.

She thought it was Ming Zi having forgotten something, but when she opened the door, she saw someone unexpected.

Fang Ting?

Why would she be here?

"Si Rong! Jiang Cheng is in trouble! Come with me quickly!"

Si Rong didn't have time to ask so much before she was pulled out the door by Fang Ting.

Only after going downstairs did she learn that Shen Mu had taken the injured Shen Lan to make a scene at the military unit.

There was also Shen Yun, Li Xuan, and the two children; now some were making a scene, and some were crying!

It was a complete mess!

Fang Ting was worried sick and had only found out Si Rong's current address after asking the eldest aunt of the Si Family.

This was a major matter, so Si Rong returned inside to call both her eldest brother and second brother.

She was worried that she wouldn't be able to handle it alone.

She hadn't expected Fang Ting to be able to drive a jeep, and she drove unexpectedly well.

The whole way was practically a sprint.

By the time they reached the entrance of the military unit, Si Rong was carsick.

As soon as she got out of the car, she saw Shen Lan lying on the ground at the entrance, with Shen Mu, Shen Yun, and the others all gathered around crying and shouting, as if Shen Lan were dead.
