Chapter 234: Exploring the Mysterious Rune
Back at the apartment, Ji Chen locked the door behind him, the dim light in the room adding a few points of mystery.
Ceng Yue walked to the window without a word, pulled open the heavy curtains, let the moonlight pour in, and illuminated the strange symbol that was still flickering with ghostly light floating in the air.
"This thing, no matter how you look at it, looks like an ancient rune from some game..." Ji Chen muttered while taking out his phone and snapping a bunch of pictures at the symbol.
"Don't know if Baidu can identify it, what if it's some ancient meme, hahaha."
Ceng Yue glanced at him: "You still have the mood to joke?"
"Nervousness is useless too," Ji Chen shrugged, "Have to try to know what the situation is, right?"
Although he said so, Ji Chen's inner tension was no less than Ceng Yue's.
He uploaded the photos to various identification websites, but the results were all nothing.
Unwilling to give up, he climbed over the wall to search on foreign websites, but still had no clues.
"Strange..." Ji Chen scratched his head, grabbed the water cup on the table irritably, and took a big gulp.
Just as his fingertips accidentally touched the symbol, a strange energy poured into his body, and some blurred images appeared in his mind.
Broken steles, ancient altars, crowds chanting obscure spells...
These images flashed by, but made Ji Chen feel a palpitation.
"I seem to... have seen something..." Ji Chen muttered to himself. He reached out again, carefully touched the symbol, and concentrated on feeling the strange energy.
This time, the images were clearer, and he even heard ancient spells and felt the powerful energy fluctuations emanating from the altar.
"Wait..." Ji Chen opened his eyes abruptly, essence light flashing in his eyes. "I seem to know how to decipher this thing!" He grabbed Ceng Yue's hand excitedly. "This symbol... it's not text, nor a pattern, it's a carrier of energy!"
He closed his eyes and chanted the spells that appeared in his mind in a low voice.
With the chanting of the spells, the symbol in the air began to vibrate violently, emitting even more dazzling light.
The room was filled with powerful energy fluctuations, pressing the two until they could almost not breathe.
When the last syllable of the spell fell, the light of the symbol suddenly converged, finally turning into a stream of light and drilling into Ji Chen's brow.
At the same time, a huge amount of information poured into his mind, making him feel dizzy.
"This... this..." Ji Chen's face was pale, pointing at his head, unable to speak for a long time.
Ceng Yue supported him, a trace of worry flashing in her eyes: "What's wrong with you?"
Ji Chen took a deep breath, trying hard to calm his excited mood: "I'm fine... just... this symbol, it points to a... an ancient... Supernatural Ability family..."
"Supernatural Ability family?" Ceng Yue repeated these four words and looked at Ji Chen.
Ji Chen didn't answer, just stared at the front, seemingly seeing something shocking.
He slowly reached out his hand, his fingertips trembling slightly, pointing in a certain direction outside the window, saying word by word: "Right... there..."
Ji Chen pointed outside the window, his tone grave: "Right there... the ancient family lurking in the shadows of the city—Night Owl."
Ceng Yue looked in the direction of his gaze; the city shrouded in night, high-rise buildings, bright lights, seemingly calm and peaceful, yet hiding countless secrets.
She couldn't imagine that in such a city, there actually existed an ancient Supernatural Ability family.
"Night Owl..." Ceng Yue repeated the name in a low voice, and a chill rose from the bottom of her heart.
This name, just hearing it, was full of ominous meaning.
"That's right, Night Owl." Ji Chen's tone carried a trace of gravity. "According to the information in the symbol, the Night Owl family has existed for hundreds of years. They possess powerful Supernatural Ability and mysterious inheritance, always hiding in the dark, manipulating a part of the city."
"Manipulating the city?" Ceng Yue's brows frowned slightly; she couldn't imagine how a Supernatural Ability family could manipulate a modern city.
"They are like venomous snakes lurking in the dark, silently watching everything." Ji Chen's tone carried a trace of disgust. "They use Supernatural Ability to control some key figures, secretly manipulating the city's economy, politics, and even... the Supernatural Ability world."
Ji Chen's brows frowned tightly, and a sense of worry struck.
He felt that the appearance of the Night Owl family would break the balance of the city's Supernatural Ability world, and even trigger a huge storm.
"And..." Ji Chen paused, his tone becoming even more grave. "The information in the symbol shows that the Night Owl family seems to have... or rather, have some kind of hostility toward us... toward me..."
"Hostility?" Cold light flashed in Ceng Yue's eyes. "Why do they have hostility toward you?"
Ji Chen shook his head: "I don't know either. Maybe because of my Supernatural Ability, or maybe because I discovered their secrets..."
With the deciphering of the information, they discovered that this family was powerful and had already secretly laid out plans against them.
A huge pressure and sense of oppression shrouded them.
Ji Chen and Ceng Yue felt unprecedented crises.
Ji Chen took a deep breath, trying hard to keep himself calm.
He knew that now was not the time for panic.
He had to find out the purpose of the Night Owl family as soon as possible, as well as how much strength they actually had.
"It seems we have to take the initiative." Determination flashed in Ji Chen's eyes. "I want to see what kind of background this Night Owl family has!"
He grabbed his coat and turned to walk toward the door.
"Where to?" Ceng Yue asked.
"To find the stronghold of the Night Owl family!" Ji Chen said without looking back. "I have a premonition that they are in..." He suddenly stopped his steps, his gaze locked in a certain direction outside the window. "There!"
The corners of Ji Chen's mouth curled into a confident arc, excitement flashing in his eyes, like a leopard about to hunt.
"Let's go! It's time to let them know who the real protagonist of this city is!" He walked out the door with big strides, Ceng Yue followed closely, and the two figures flashed and disappeared into the night.
The two shuttled between the city's high-rise buildings, like ghosts.
Ji Chen relied on that strange induction to lock onto a direction; it was the edge of the city, an abandoned industrial area.
This place was ignored all year round, dark and damp, an excellent place for hiding dirt and filth. Ji Chen felt that the Night Owl's lair definitely couldn't run away!
However, before the two could get close, several black shadows darted out from the surrounding abandoned factory buildings.
"Yo-ho, coming to send heads so quickly?" Ji Chen whistled, his tone carrying a trace of playfulness.
These black shadows were clearly the minions of the Night Owl family; they emitted weak Supernatural Ability fluctuations, clearly cannon fodder level existence.
"Those who trespass on Night Owl territory, die!" The minions let out hoarse shouts, the sharp blades in their hands reflecting cold light, lunging toward Ji Chen and Ceng Yue.
"These days, villains have no new ideas? Can't the lines be changed?" Ji Chen shook his head helplessly, but his body had already made a reaction.
He swayed his figure, directly dodging the minions' attacks, and simultaneously kicked a minion away with a whip leg, hitting the wall fiercely.
Ceng Yue was even more clean and neat; her hands were covered with faint blue light, directly releasing an Ice Spike, instantly freezing two minions in place.
The remaining minions saw this and were stunned; they didn't expect these two guys who looked ordinary to be so strong.
"Aiyo, the cooperation is not bad, looks like you guys didn't play together less often!" Ji Chen teased while fighting side by side with Ceng Yue.
He discovered that the tacit understanding between the two was getting better and better, every attack could perfectly connect, leaving the enemy with no power to fight back.
"Your Supernatural Ability is really eye-opening!" The Ability Users hiding around were all attracted by their battle, unable to help but exclaim.
However, just when the two were about to resolve the battle, Ji Chen noticed something wrong.
The strength of these minions was really too weak, not at all like existence that could threaten them.
Moreover, their attack methods were too reckless, seemingly deliberately exposing themselves to attract their attention.
"Careful, they are bait!" Ji Chen reminded in a low voice, his brows frowned tightly, his doubts becoming increasingly thick.
Just then, a black shadow suddenly darted out from the darkness on the side, its speed astonishing.
Ji Chen and Ceng Yue hurriedly dodged, but the black shadow didn't attack directly, instead leaving a sentence: "Your journey has just begun..."
The black shadow disappeared into the darkness, leaving Ji Chen and Ceng Yue looking at each other.
Ji Chen said slowly: "It seems this Night Owl family is much more complex than we imagined..." He turned to look at Ceng Yue, his eyes firm, yet carrying a trace of unspeakable meaning. "What we are going to is probably not any stronghold..." ===== CHAPTER 235 =====
