Chapter 26: Crisis Lurks

~7 min read 1,281 words

Reconstruction work was in full swing, but Ji Chen always felt a chill behind his back, as if he were being watched by something unclean.

He wasn't someone who hadn't seen big scenes, but this faint sense of being watched was like a fish bone stuck in his throat, making him feel uncomfortable all over.

"This feeling is really like having opened Yin-Yang Eyes!" Ji Chen muttered in a low voice, frowning.

What made him even more irritable was that the reconstruction project kept having accidents.

The bridge that was just repaired today collapsed inexplicably tomorrow; the pipeline that was just laid yesterday was blown into pieces today.

This is definitely not an accident!

"Behind this, there must be an old six playing tricks!" Ji Chen hammered the table hard, and the solid wood table instantly cracked.

"Calm down, don't dismantle my table." Ceng Yue's voice remained cold, but the ice spike in her hand unconsciously condensed and melted, showing she wasn't that calm either.

Ji Chen and Ceng Yue, this pair of "Divine Couple," decided to go down to the field themselves to investigate the "Black Hand" behind this.

However, this group of masterminds was as cunning as loaches, always able to slip away a step ahead of time.

They were like ghosts hiding in the dark, always able to perfectly avoid the two's investigation, leaving them with only a mess.

What gave Ji Chen an even bigger headache was that this group of masterminds was also spreading rumors throughout the Supernatural World, with various versions of conspiracy theories flying everywhere.

"Ji Chen and Ceng Yue are engaging in a power dictatorship," "They are the true masterminds," "They embezzled all the resources!" and other such rumors were making everyone panic.

"Which grandson is stabbing us in the back like this?" Ji Chen was so angry his teeth itched; he wished he could drag the masterminds out and beat them to a pulp.

For a time, a trust crisis spread in the Supernatural World.

Comrades who once fought side by side now looked at them with suspicion.

The air was filled with a tense and dangerous atmosphere, like the calm before a storm.

"This is definitely not a coincidence." Ceng Yue spat out a sentence coldly, her eyes sharp as a knife.

Ji Chen clenched his fists, his knuckles making clicking sounds. He looked at a certain direction in the distance, his eyes as deep as the endless night.

"They are about to make a move..."

Rumors spread like a plague, and Ji Chen and Ceng Yue's reputation hit rock bottom.

Former comrades now began to point fingers and whisper about them.

What was even more annoying was that their friends were also implicated, inexplicably splashed with dirty water, either losing their jobs or being squeezed out.

"These old sixes are really damn persistent!" Ji Chen punched the wall, and the wall instantly cracked, debris falling down.

He felt full of self-blame, feeling that he had implicated everyone.

This sense of powerlessness was like being put on heavy shackles, making him almost unable to breathe.

Ceng Yue rarely didn't mock him, just stood silently by his side, the light of the ice spike in her hand flickering, seemingly expressing her anger silently.

"I'm really a piece of trash!" Ji Chen's voice was as low as a suppressed beast. He felt the pressure around him surging like a tide, almost drowning him.

However, to everyone's surprise, Ji Chen didn't jump like thunder as usual and investigate to the end.

Instead, he did the opposite of what was expected, publicly announcing that he had become disheartened, had decided to give up on pursuing the masterminds, and was going to leave the Supernatural World for a period of time.

Once this news came out, the entire Supernatural World exploded.

Some gloated, feeling Ji Chen was a coward; some sighed, feeling a generation of heaven's pride had fallen; others sneered, feeling he was posturing.

Even Ceng Yue was a bit confused, and she asked with a cold face: "What kind of ghost are you playing?"

"The mountain man has his own clever plan." Ji Chen smiled mysteriously, but a cunning light flashed in the bottom of his eyes.

His move of "retreating to advance" could be said to have played to a new height.

Sure enough, Ji Chen's "retreat" made the mysterious faction in the dark relax their vigilance.

They began to get carried away, and various small actions became more frequent and unscrupulous.

On a rainy night, the wind roared, and lightning tore the night sky.

Ji Chen and Ceng Yue stood on the top of a high building, letting the cold rain beat on their bodies.

Ji Chen suddenly raised his head, his eyes like torches, staring at a certain direction in the distance: "They can't hold back anymore..."

Ceng Yue frowned and was about to speak, but Ji Chen made a gesture of silence, a faint light shining on his fingertips.

Lightning tore the night sky, illuminating an abandoned factory in the distance.

Ji Chen's mouth hooked into a cold sneer: "Found you!"

The two sneaked into the factory like ghosts, and the scene inside was shocking.

Various high-tech equipment flickered with strange light, and several people wearing black uniforms were operating around a giant energy device, looking nervous.

"Good guy, what big news are they trying to make?" Ji Chen muttered in a low voice.

"Do it!" Ceng Yue was concise.

The two erupted instantly, like tigers descending the mountain, unstoppable.

Ji Chen's Supernatural Ability swept the field like a storm, and those black-clothed people were blasted away before they could react, hitting the wall and making bursts of wails.

Ceng Yue's ice spikes were even more precise, blocking all escape routes and trapping the enemies in the center.

"You... who are you?" A black-clothed person asked in terror, his voice trembling.

"The people who send you to see the King of Hell!" Ji Chen sneered, his fist condensing powerful energy, and he punched out, destroying the energy device completely.

The factory was in chaos, with explosions and screams rising and falling.

Ji Chen and Ceng Yue were like gods of death, solving all the black-clothed people.

After the battle, Ji Chen came to Ceng Yue's side and found a deep wound on her arm, with fresh blood constantly gushing out.

He felt distressed and quickly tore off his sleeve to bandage her.

"It's fine, minor injury." Ceng Yue's tone remained cold, but a hint of tenderness flashed in her eyes.

Ji Chen held her hand tightly, his heart filled with a desire to protect: "I swore I wouldn't let you get hurt again, but I've broken my promise again and again. Do you still believe me?"

Ceng Yue nodded.

Although they had been getting stronger, the enemies were also endless. Getting injured in battle was inevitable; this was not his fault.

Ji Chen held Ceng Yue in his arms.

Everything was left unsaid.

The surrounding Ability Users rushed to the scene, and seeing the miserable state of the scene, they all gasped.

They finally understood the truth and admired Ji Chen and Ceng Yue's wisdom and strength.

"Ji Chen, you are really too powerful!"

"Ceng Yue, your ice spikes are really hitting the mark every time!"

Reconstruction work got back on track, and the Supernatural World gradually returned to calm.

However, Ji Chen always had a sense of unease...

One night, Ji Chen was reading in the study when suddenly, a black envelope flew in from outside the window and landed in front of him.

There was no writing on the envelope, only a blood-red mark... ===== CHAPTER 27 =====
