Chapter 91: The Afterglow of Glory

~7 min read 1,394 words

Ji Chen stood on the ruins, the air still filled with the smell of gunpowder from the battle, as well as a trace of the sweetness of victory.

He had thought he could properly enjoy this hard-won peace next; after all, who would have thought that he, who was once like an ant, could now stand at the peak, stepping on a once-arrogant conspirator? This feeling was simply awesome.

However, before he could properly savor this feeling, the sky suddenly seemed to be splashed with ink, instantly turning gloomy.

The originally bright sunlight was now tightly blocked by thick dark clouds, as if some ominous thing were about to descend.

The surrounding air also began to become suppressed, the originally victorious atmosphere vanished, replaced by a heart-suffocating tension.

"Damn, what's the situation?" Ji Chen couldn't help but complain in his heart; what kind of ghost weather is this?

Is God playing with him?

Could it be that there was a network delay when exploding equipment after beating the BOSS?

He frowned, feeling the surging power in his body, which was now like a wild horse that had broken its reins, restless.

He tried to control this power, only to find that it didn't listen to him at all, occasionally emitting unstable fluctuations, shaking his internal organs until they hurt.

"Is this the weakness period after beating the BOSS?" Ji Chen's heart skipped a beat; he clearly felt that although his supernatural ability had gained huge improvement in the battle just now, it also appeared with some unstable situations, just like upgrading without patching.

This feeling was like having a time bomb tied to his body, which could explode at any moment.

He clenched his fists, his nails deeply embedded in his palms, and a strong sense of anxiety surged into his heart like a tide.

He knew that now was not the time to relax; a new crisis had quietly arrived, and he had to find a way to deal with it before the crisis erupted.

He looked around, trying to find some clues, only to find that besides the broken walls, there was nothing.

"Can't go on like this..." Ji Chen muttered to himself, his eyes becoming firm.

Just then, Ceng Yue's figure appeared in his line of sight.

Her cool gaze carried a trace of worry as she walked over slowly, gently holding his arm, and said, "You should rest for a while." Ceng Yue's appearance was like a bright lamp in the dark night; although that light was cold, it realistically warmed Ji Chen's heart.

He knew that although Ceng Yue usually had a "strangers stay away" appearance, at critical moments, she would always appear by his side, which made a warm current surge in his heart.

"Rest?" Ji Chen raised his eyebrows, his tone carrying a trace of confusion and disapproval.

"Do you think now is the time to rest? This ghost weather, and this inexplicable restlessness in my body, are clearly looking for trouble!" He pointed to the gloomy sky above, then raised his hand to look at his palm, where unstable energy light was faintly flickering.

Ceng Yue frowned; she didn't like Ji Chen's way of speaking, but she also understood that Ji Chen wasn't the type to make trouble for no reason.

She said coldly: "Your state is unstable and needs time to adjust."

Ji Chen felt like a primary school student being disciplined, instantly feeling a bit unhappy, his tone hardening: "Adjust? Do you think those guys hiding in the dark will give us time to adjust? Every second delayed now is one more point of danger."

The air was filled with a trace of gunpowder, and the atmosphere between the two instantly became tense.

Ceng Yue never liked being questioned; she tightly pressed her lips, her gaze becoming sharp.

"Stop arguing, my head hurts!" Ji Chen held his temples, feeling restless.

He clenched his fists hard, feeling the uncontrollable supernatural ability in his body rampaging, as if wanting to tear him into pieces.

"No, can't go on like this!"

Just as he was struggling in his heart, he suddenly felt as if a new door had opened in his mind, and a brand-new method of controlling supernatural ability poured into his consciousness like a tide.

He seemed to have had an epiphany, and the originally restless energy began to become docile, finally becoming orderly under his control.

He felt his body seemed to have been renewed, full of power, and that feeling of controlling everything was back!

He took a deep breath, feeling the surging power in his body, and a confident smile couldn't help but curl on his lips.

Looking up at Ceng Yue, his eyes carried a trace of pride, saying: "See, I said I was fine, everything is under control!"

Just then, Ji Chen suddenly felt a slight vibration from the earth under his feet, and a low hiss came to his ears.

Ceng Yue's face changed slightly; she turned her head violently, looking into the distance, her brows tightly locked.

"There's a situation..."

The earth trembled more and more violently, as if some giant beast was turning over underground.

Immediately after, waves of low hisses came from far to near, like roars from hell, shaking people's eardrums until they buzzed.

"Damn, what is that?" Ji Chen complained, subconsciously protecting Ceng Yue behind him.

The next second, a group of ferocious mutated creatures darted out from the ruins.

They had huge bodies, covered with hard scales, flickering with metallic luster.

The scarlet eyes were full of bloodthirsty madness, and the sharp claws and teeth flashed with cold light; one look and you knew they weren't good people.

"Work is here!" Ji Chen's lips curled into an excited arc, the surging supernatural ability in his body eager to move.

The battle was on the verge of breaking out.

The mutated creatures were like crazy wild bulls, lunging at Ji Chen and Ceng Yue.

Ji Chen didn't dare to be careless, quickly mobilizing the supernatural ability in his body, forming an indestructible energy barrier, firmly protecting him and Ceng Yue within it.

"Bang, bang, bang!"

The mutated creatures crazily hit the energy barrier, making deafening sounds.

The surrounding buildings were swaying, dust flying, as if they could collapse at any moment.

Although Ceng Yue still appeared cold on the surface, she relied on Ji Chen in her heart.

She knew that at this dangerous moment, only Ji Chen could protect her.

"These guys, their skin is quite thick!" Ji Chen complained while resisting the attack.

His eyes condensed, and a dazzling ball of light gathered in his hand, smashing it fiercely at the mutated creatures.

"Boom!"

With a loud noise, the light ball exploded, and the powerful shockwave shook the surrounding mutated creatures away.

However, the vitality of these mutated creatures was abnormally tenacious, and they soon climbed up again, continuing to launch attacks at them.

In the intense battle, a piece of debris suddenly flew over and hit Ceng Yue's shoulder.

"Hiss..." Ceng Yue gasped, her face instantly turning pale.

"Ceng Yue!" Ji Chen saw this, anxious. He pulled Ceng Yue into his arms.

"I'm fine..." Ceng Yue endured the pain and said in a low voice.

"What time is it, and you're still being stubborn!" Ji Chen's tone carried a trace of blame, but it was full of concern.

"You beasts, all go to hell!"

He roared, his figure shuttling between the mutated creatures like a ghost, every punch, every kick containing power to destroy the world.

The mutated creatures couldn't resist Ji Chen's storm-like attacks at all, falling to the ground one after another.

Watching Ji Chen fighting so hard for her, Ceng Yue was filled with emotion and admiration.

She knew that this man was worth entrusting her life to.

The battle finally ended.

Ji Chen held Ceng Yue, gently stroking her wound.

However, just then, strange runes suddenly appeared in the distant sky, flickering with bizarre light.

"This..." Ji Chen's face changed, a sense of foreboding surging in his heart.

"We must leave here quickly." Ceng Yue said in a solemn tone.

"Go!" Ji Chen didn't hesitate, holding Ceng Yue, and ran toward the distance.
