Chapter 18: I Will Take Responsibility for You

~7 min read 1,394 words

"Little girl, are you alright?!"

The man hurried out of the car, looking at Shi Yi with eyes full of anxiety, and carefully examined her entire body.

His features were as sharp as if carved by a knife, dignified and handsome, yet his eyes were deep and gentle, with the corners slightly upturned and a faint scar at the corner of his right eye.

"I'm fine."

After saying this, Shi Yi held the cat and turned to leave.

Just then, her arm was gently tugged. As Shi Yi turned, a business card was quickly shoved into her hand.

"If you feel any discomfort, you can call my number at any time."

"I will take responsibility for you."

Having said this, the man immediately realized he had said something strange and hurriedly explained in a panic, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way... I meant that I would take you to the hospital..."

The man's expression was flustered and concerned, yet Shi Yi maintained a calm and indifferent expression on her face throughout.

The man frowned slightly. It was his first time seeing such a strange girl; she had almost lost her life to save a cat... yet she was so cold and distant toward humans, especially those pale-colored eyes, which, while extremely beautiful, seemed as devoid of emotion as artificial glass.

Shi Yi did not linger. She took the business card and gave a faint "Mm."

"Understood."

Then she held the cat and left quickly.

Not until she reached the side of the road did Shi Yi carefully place the cat on the ground. Watching the little black ball dart away with a "whoosh," she took out the business card and unfolded it under the light.

Her gaze narrowed slightly, and her brow furrowed.

So it was him...

One hour later, Lanwan City People's Hospital, first floor, Medical Examination Department.

"Excuse me, where can I pick up the medical examination report?" Shi Yi arrived at the window and asked cautiously.

"Just use the verification code received on your phone to pick it up at the automated medical kiosk."

"What if... I accidentally deleted the verification code message?"

Shi Yi certainly hadn't "accidentally deleted" it; her phone had been confiscated by Shi Heng, so she couldn't receive the verification code at all.

"If you deleted it, you can use your ID card."

"Okay, thank you."

Shi Yi took out her ID card, walked to the medical kiosk, and printed out her medical examination report with a "whirring" sound.

On the very last page of the report, three large red characters were written: Not Qualified.

Looking at the report in her hand, Shi Yi curled her lips and gave a helpless, bitter smile. She had long expected this result—after all, no team would want a "burden" missing a kidney.

Yet, seeing those three glaring red characters, she still felt as if a sharp arrow had been plunged into her heart, leaving it bleeding.

She had clearly worked so hard, and had been so expectant!

Even after swearing the vicious oath to Shi Heng, she hadn't given up a glimmer of hope in her heart—what "dying without a burial place," what "being struck by lightning," she no longer cared!

She just wanted to escape this home, escape to a place where no one knew her, and survive on her own abilities.

As long as she could survive, that was enough!

But in the end, she failed.

Perhaps, this was fate...

The last glimmer of light in Shi Yi's eyes dimmed. She lowered her head, tore the report in her hand into pieces bit by bit, and threw them into the trash can.

Coming out of the hospital, the rain outside was getting heavier, turning into a downpour, and the wind was blowing fast and fierce.

A gust of wind blew, and Shi Yi's tattered umbrella finally couldn't bear the force; the ribs snapped with a "crack."

In an instant, the torrential rain soaked her through to the bone.

Shi Yi:...

Does this Heaven have a grudge against her?!

She simply threw away the broken umbrella and walked on through the rain. Just then, a blinding light shot through the curtain of rain, pointing straight at her.

The next second, a streamlined silver-white sports car stopped in front of her with a screech.

Shi Yi squinted uncomfortably and raised her arm to block the glare.

Only then did she realize that this car... seemed a bit familiar?

Sure enough, the next moment the car door opened, and Chu Yehan slowly stepped out. He was wearing a black slim-fit suit today, revealing a perfect figure with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. His distinct fingers held an umbrella, and a faint, mocking smile hung on the corners of his lips.

"Are you sick in the head!"

Shi Yi cursed out loud, "Chu Yehan, why do you appear every time it rains heavily?!"

Chu Yehan walked up to Shi Yi, but the black umbrella did not tilt toward her even a little bit.

"Don't be so excited, little cripple. Today... I'm here to help you."

"Chu Yehan, what on earth do you mean?!"

"International Medical Team, medical examination report." Chu Yehan looked into Shi Yi's eyes and said word for word.

Shi Yi's heart tightened violently.

"How do you know about this? Chu Yehan, are you stalking me?!"

"Heh, stalking you? I wouldn't deign to use such low-class methods." Chu Yehan hummed, then stepped forward, pinning Shi Yi's thin body against the water-streaked car body, and whispered in her ear in a low voice:

"However, I know what it is you want."

Shi Yi's back was soaked through by the cold rain in an instant, causing her to shiver all over, and her breathing became rapid.

"Why don't you tell me, cough, cough, cough... what it is I want?"

"What you want is to escape that hellish home, tell me, am I right?" Chu Yehan's lips curled into an evil smile, and he continued, "It's just a pity that your broken body has dragged you down again, hahaha..."

Chu Yehan looked up and laughed, his laughter wanton and eerie.

Shi Yi's face, however, showed no trace of fear. Raindrops fell one by one along her black hair. She looked at Chu Yehan with burning eyes and roared in a suppressed voice:

"Chu Yehan, all of this is thanks to you! You took one of my kidneys, cough, cough, cough, and you still... still want to do what to me?!"

"So you knew all along, you're quite smart."

Chu Yehan sneered, "But I said, I'm here to help you today."

"Help me? How? I don't need any of your help!"

"Don't be in such a hurry to refuse, let's get in the car and talk." Chu Yehan stepped back and stood in front of the car door, looking at Shi Yi with an unhurried expression.

Shi Yi did not move, looking at him with a stern expression:

"Why should I get in your car?! Chu Yehan, if you keep pestering me like this, I'm going to call the police!"

"Call the police? Heh, you, an ex-convict, actually trust the police quite a bit, don't you?"

Chu Yehan smiled sarcastically, then unhurriedly took a cigarette from his pocket, held it in his mouth, took out a lighter, and lit it.

"Don't you want a medical examination report? I can get one for you."

Chu Yehan stood under the umbrella and exhaled a puff of blue smoke leisurely.

Shi Yi's brow furrowed deeply.

"Get one? You mean... forge a medical examination report?!"

"What? Don't believe me? Heh, you don't want to think about what kind of business my Chu Family does."

Shi Yi certainly knew that the Chu Family was in the underworld business. Killing, arson, extortion—they did it all. Forging a mere medical report was indeed a piece of cake for him.

"But why are you helping me?"

Through the gray, misty curtain of rain, Chu Yehan looked at Shi Yi's pale, fragile face, soaked through by the rain, and the stubborn flush at the corners of her eyes.

A playful expression suddenly appeared on his face.

"Of course it's not for free, I have conditions."

"What conditions?"

"Today is my birthday, little cripple. I want you to spend the day with me for my birthday." ===== CHAPTER 19 =====
