Chapter 236: Entering the City of Carnage
Gu Xuan heard the newcomer's question, but unlike Tang Hao in the original, he did not say he wanted a Bloody Mary; instead he whispered to Du Gu Yan:
Basically everyone here is a desperate criminal; each person's hands are stained with murder. If you don't like it, you can kill them all—no problem.
Hearing Gu Xuan's words, Du Gu Yan showed a delighted smile; she had long been itching to act, because the gazes of the people here made her nauseous.
Kill us? With just you two wet-behind-the-ears brats?
Heh heh heh, I think this woman is not bad; how about I give her to you to look after?
As soon as Gu Xuan finished speaking, various vulgar and contemptuous voices filled the tavern; those drinkers, having found a vent for their pent-up feelings, directly launched a verbal attack on Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan.
And the black-clad waiter who had just asked the question also said coldly: "If you provoke them, I can't save you either, you……"
Before he could finish speaking, Du Gu Yan had already released her hold on Gu Xuan's hand, stepped forward two paces, and stood before the waiter.
As Du Gu Yan moved, two yellow, one purple, and three black soul rings—six in all—rose from her body, though she did not summon her martial soul; only her second yellow soul ring lit up, she slightly opened her mouth and spat a puff of greenish poison mist directly at the waiter.
Meanwhile, the others present, upon seeing the six soul rings on Du Gu Yan's body—enough to shock the world—saw the noisy clamor abruptly cease in an instant.
"A Soul Emperor? A ten-thousand-year fourth soul ring?!"
Before their exclamations had even fully left their mouths, the greenish poison mist had already engulfed the entire tavern; in merely a moment, everyone turned into a puddle of pus, leaving only Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan still standing there.
Du Gu Yan, feeling nauseous, covered her nose and said lightly: "So disgusting!"
This was Du Gu Yan's first kill, so feeling nauseous is normal, but she felt no psychological burden whatsoever for killing these people.
Afterwards, Du Gu Yan turned to Gu Xuan and asked: "But having killed them, how are we to know the entrance to the City of Carnage?"
Gu Xuan smiled faintly, walked slowly to the tavern's bar, glanced at it, then raised his hand and slammed his palm heavily onto the bar.
With a tremendous boom, the bar shattered into fragments that flew apart, revealing the floor.
Gu Xuan's smile remained as he said to Du Gu Yan: "Isn't this the entrance?"
Du Gu Yan felt a mix of surprise and delight, after all she herself had no idea the bar concealed a mechanism, never expecting Gu Xuan to have already noticed it.
Although it was just the floor, after hearing Gu Xuan's words Du Gu Yan's mental power swept over it and she discovered a clue—this underside was actually hollow.
Thereafter, Gu Xuan slowly lifted his right foot, gathered soul power upon it, and then brought it down like a heavy hammer.
With a tremendous boom, a huge hole appeared in the ground, and a cold, chilly wind blew up from the cavern below.
Gu Xuan reached out a hand to take Du Gu Yan's soft hand, then said: "This is where our new beginning lies—are you afraid?"
Du Gu Yan shook her head, saying: "As long as I follow Gu Xuan, I'd dare to charge into hell itself: 'Not afraid!'"
Afterwards, the two smiled slightly, leapt down without hesitation, and jumped straight into the darkness below; their bodies were instantly engulfed by the blackness, and they vanished into it.
Having entered the darkness, after only falling a few meters, Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan already stood firm on solid ground; they needed no light, for their current mental power sufficed to see everything clearly in the dark.
This was a long passageway, sloping downward, with a chilly breeze constantly blowing against Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan's bodies; they exchanged a glance, then strode forward without the slightest hesitation.
When Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan had taken nine hundred ninety-nine steps forward, an icy voice suddenly echoed from all directions: "Welcome to the City of Carnage. This is the capital of hell, a world filled with slaughter. Here you can obtain whatever you desire, at the cost of your life."
Upon hearing that voice, Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan showed no hesitation, continuing to advance steadily forward.
Turning a corner, a faint light glimmered ahead; after walking another few dozen meters, the brightness ahead suddenly expanded in their vision—it was an open doorway, and beyond it lay signs of life.
Striding forward, noisy sounds arrived; when Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan emerged from the passageway, a hundred and one figures appeared before them.
All were clad in black armor, their faces completely hidden by helmets; among them, a hundred held heavy swords, while one sat upon a tall warhorse, whose body was also covered in thick black armor.
"You have violated the rules." The low voice sounded extremely cold, as if it did not come from a throat.
The speaker was precisely the black-armored knight seated upon the horse.
Yet Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan's gazes did not fall on him; instead they turned toward what lay behind him.
It was a black city, its thick black walls extremely broad; above the city hung a purple moon, low in the sky, seeming to be less than five hundred meters from the ground, and looking upward, everything was black, as if it were night itself.
It exuded nothing but endless loneliness and icy cold.
Having withdrawn their gaze, Gu Xuan looked at the black-armored knight and said lightly: "What happens if we break the rules?"
The black-armored knight's voice remained icy, devoid of any human breath, and he said in a low tone: "Breaking the rules demands punishment; defeat me, and you will earn the right to enter the City of Carnage."
Gu Xuan said nothing more, while Du Gu Yan had already raised her jade-green finger.
The black-armored knight slowly raised his long spear, while the black-armored warriors to either side gradually retreated, revealing an open clearing.
"I am the Fear Knight Scott!"
The warhorse suddenly accelerated, and the black-armored knight, bearing a grim aura, charged straight at Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan.
A frigid aura permeated the air, and a sharp killing intent surged from the front.
From the moment they entered the passageway, Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan found that their soul rings could no longer be released, as if they were sealed.
Although the soul rings could not be used, their soul power remained.
A jade-green poison needle had condensed on Du Gu Yan's fingertip; as the Fear Knight Scott charged forth on his heavy-armored warhorse, a tiny poison needle slipped without warning into his brow.
The warhorse did not halt its charge, but when it reached Du Gu Yan's front, the path of its impact was a pool of thick liquid, leaving only a set of black armor on the horse.
The Fear Knight Scott had already been turned by deadly poison into a puddle of pus.
As the warhorse was about to collide with Du Gu Yan, Gu Xuan's strong, sturdy arm reached out from behind her, his palm transforming into a silvery-white bone claw that seized the horse's head.
The warhorse, its head pinched by Gu Xuan, had even its iron armor deformed; it let out no whinny, and when the claw released, the horse had lost all vitality, returning to hell just like its master.
The surrounding black-armored soldiers, seeing this, could not help but exclaim; their former indifference vanished, for they too were human and could feel fear.
Gu Xuan and Du Gu Yan paid no heed to them; Du Gu Yan linked arms with Gu Xuan, and the two strolled leisurely toward the purple moon, their silhouettes gradually fading beneath the black city.
