Chapter 33: Night Walk of the Monster Horde II
"Zhang Wei, don't be afraid, I will protect you."
Bai Guagua walked out, saying these words full of confidence. But the small hand she used to hold Zhang Wei's was cold; she was likely just as uncertain inside.
The terrifying screams outside had not ceased for a moment, from one person to two, then to six or seven, rising and falling, one after another.
Had disaster finally arrived at their doorstep?
This was the first thought that rose in Zhang Wei's mind, but he subsequently noticed that none of these voices were cut short; rather, they were all screaming with full lung power. Did this mean the situation wasn't too serious yet?
"Let's go, we'll go out and take a look."
Unexpectedly, Bai Guagua tugged at his hand and refused to budge. She felt the sounds outside were truly too hair-raising. "It's been on TV—many people just wouldn't stay put, insisting on looking here and walking there, and in the end, they died miserably."
This child...
At a time like this, Zhang Wei, who bore the heavy responsibility of teaching his sister, felt he couldn't just brush it off with a joke; he had to educate her seriously. So, he patiently reasoned, "Then do you think you can sleep soundly tonight? When danger approaches, the most important thing is to quickly assess the severity and whether it threatens you, rather than playing the ostrich and burying your head in the sand, thinking that nothing will come looking for you."
"Right now, we know nothing about what's happening outside. The correct approach should be to quickly understand the cause and make a decision: are we running away or staying home? Either decision is better than shivering under the covers at home."
Bai Guagua was persuaded, so she followed Zhang Wei to the courtyard gate, opened it, and peeked outside. Her body immediately stiffened, followed by an ear-piercing scream that was so loud it made the Zhang Wei beside her instinctively cover his ears.
Yet the next second, after he saw what was in the alleyway outside, a chill shot straight from his tailbone to his crown.
On the road less than two meters wide, a long "line" was winding forward, accompanied by a rustling sound. But looking closely, this was clearly snakes.
Snakes were not scary; even the world's largest snake wouldn't cause such a reaction here. But one snake bit the tail of the one behind it, and that one bit the tail of the one in front. At a glance, there were no fewer than a hundred snakes biting tails and moving, dragging into a black line over a hundred meters long on the alleyway...
That was fine, but the leading large snake actually had a human head. A mop of messy hair covered the head, making it hard to see the details, but it was definitely a human head.
Bai Guagua wasn't afraid of cockroaches, nor was she afraid of snakes—children from poor families didn't have that much to fear—but the scene before her was too hair-raising. She immediately jumped up in fright, clinging to Zhang Wei like a koala, her lips trembling.
"W-w-what is this thing? A hybrid breed raised by some dark scientist?"
Zhang Wei was just about to speak when the large snake dragging the long procession suddenly stopped. It tilted its head, topped with messy hair, toward them, as if it were eyeing the two of them...
Absorbed Resentment from the Moon-Devouring Giant Monster, +677.
Damn... you can actually understand human speech, and you even know how to express dissatisfaction about being called a hybrid breed?
Zhang Wei was shocked on the spot.
And what the hell was a Moon-Devouring Giant Monster? Could it have crawled out of an ancient tomb?
Bai Guagua behind him was even more terrified by that one look, her lips trembling as she muttered, "It's all your fault, all your fault. I told you curiosity kills the cat; you don't have a cat's nine lives, yet you insist on having a cat's illness."
Meow...
A hoarse cat's cry suddenly came from above. The two looked up and found a fat, large tabby cat squatting on the wall. Its two greenish eyes were staring over, its whiskers twitching, as if it were quite displeased.
Absorbed Resentment from Lao Mao, +287.
Bai Guagua opened her mouth and pointed at the wall, wanting to say something, but Zhang Wei hurriedly covered her mouth with his hand.
"Guagua, don't say another word. First you say they're hybrids, then you say they have a cat's illness—you've almost offended all the monsters, okay?"
Zhang Wei really wanted to kneel before the little girl. What kind of mouth was this? Whatever she said, she attracted. On one side, they were being eyed by a snake monster, and on the other, glared at by a monster cat, and both sides seemed very displeased with them.
This world had truly changed; even the poultry were starting to mutate. How much further would this go before it ended...
After a while, fortunately, the "Moon-Devouring Giant Monster" disappeared at the other end of the alley, and the old cat was gone too; it seemed they had no intention of causing trouble or harming people.
Snakes traveling through the alley, biting tails and moving—this would probably make the newspapers tomorrow. And at the end where the snake group came from, the other end of the alley began to get noisy, as if many people were gathered together.
Now Bai Guagua didn't want to go back to the room either; instead, she pulled Zhang Wei to go over there to watch the excitement.
Thinking of that scene just now, she felt incredibly hair-raising, and even lying on the bed would make her suspect a snake was hidden in some corner of the covers.
Walking forward in the dark for about a hundred meters, they found a circle of people gathered ahead. The crowing of chickens, barking of dogs, and human voices were mixed together, which made the previous fear fade quite a bit.
Pushing through the crowd, the two finally saw a large pit appear in front; it seemed the ground had collapsed.
An area of about two hundred square meters had now become a bottomless black hole. Perhaps because the power was out again at night, the bottom of the hole couldn't be seen at all; even flashlights couldn't reach the bottom. The chill inside rose straight up, giving people goosebumps even in the sweltering summer heat.
Zhang Wei looked around and suddenly realized this was the landing site of one of the severed limbs of the Moon-Devouring Giant Monster on the night the sky changed.
Was it a coincidence?
Or was there some connection?
"It's truly Wang Laoer's fated calamity, sigh."
A bystander sighed.
"Isn't it? Last time the whole family was out, they escaped with their lives and even got a government subsidy to renovate the house. Who knew that after only a few days, disaster would come knocking again."
The person speaking stretched their head to look inside the sinkhole and muttered, "So deep, they probably didn't survive."
After a while, with the sound of a siren, police and firefighters arrived, dispersed the onlookers, and pulled a cordon around the sinkhole.
Zhang Wei held Bai Guagua's hand and dispersed with the crowd. After walking a few dozen meters away, he looked back and saw a familiar figure stepping out of an SUV.
It was Jiang Yuanzhan.
Seeing the way those police officers were saluting him, it seemed this person's status was truly not low. But he had no intention of going up to greet him; this was none of his business, and he was powerless to help anyway.
Seeming to sense his gaze, Jiang Yuanzhan turned his head and swept a glance, discovering Zhang Wei in the crowd. He waved at him, signaling for him to come over.
Zhang Wei smiled slightly, waved his right hand in a goodbye gesture, mouthed "Good night" silently, and then turned and left.
Jiang Yuanzhan was completely annoyed. I told you to come over, and you're waving goodbye to me? Are you blind or doing it on purpose?
Absorbed Resentment from Jiang Yuanzhan, +333.
Zhang Wei was naturally doing it on purpose.
This person called him over, and it was likely he would be taken down into the hole to check the situation. But in the middle of the night, who wanted to go take risks and get covered in mud? Would he still be able to attend class tomorrow?
Besides, his, Zhang Wei's, strength hadn't reached the point of self-preservation yet; the outside world's speculation and assessment of him clearly couldn't make him arrogant.
Regarding his own positioning, he had a clear sense of his own limitations.
Returning home, Zhang Wei checked every corner from front to back, confirming that no ghosts or monsters were hiding in the corners, only then letting Bai Guagua set her mind at ease.
However, today's events sounded an alarm for him; encountering mutated animals twice in a row also made a sense of crisis arise in his heart.
That "Moon-Devouring Giant Monster" seemed to be in a hurry and ignored him; that large tabby cat perhaps had lived with humans for a long time and didn't hold a grudge against them, but such good luck couldn't last forever.
To avoid being unable to resist when a life-or-death crisis descends, Zhang Wei decided to continue lighting up the stars, at least until he obtained a Supernatural Ability sufficient for self-preservation.
This world is becoming more and more interesting; he certainly cannot die early.
