Chapter 989: Walking with the Ancient God

~9 min read 1,661 words

A golden stream of light flew just like that above His crown, transforming into the likeness of Li Zhiyi.

Li Zhiyi's true body was still atop the giant finger, suppressing Bai E.

This body was merely a clone made of a strand of will.

As this clone struck down with a palm.

A wild, fierce power of will poured into Bai E's body.

In an instant, like ice water being poured over him, it brought a sliver of clarity to Bai E's already maddened consciousness.

The next moment.

As Li Zhiyi pulled with one hand, strands of pitch-black light were extracted from within Bai E's body.

That was a wisp of Bai E's broken soul, carrying a frenzied will.

He stood right there.

His broken armor was mottled with rust, the plates cracked and hanging, bloodstains congealed into black scabs, and the baleful aura around him was heavy and dense, entirely filled with a sense of madness.

"Kill... kill you..."

Bai E growled low, a thick murderous intent emerging within his pair of ruined eyes.

"Senior, why must you kill me?"

Li Zhiyi spoke calmly.

"Kill you..."

The damaged white hair obscured Bai E's withered face, and his eyes grew increasingly dry.

Li Zhiyi, however, pointed toward his own true body in the outside world.

The true body stood atop the giant finger, its physical form wrapped in endless malice, undergoing some kind of unknown and terrifying distortion.

"Senior, look, my true body has already become just like you."

Bai E's eyes trembled as he looked toward the outside world.

In his eyes, Li Zhiyi's true body was rapidly changing from an Ancient God Beast into a human.

Bai E was stunned.

"So, Senior, why must you kill me?" Li Zhiyi chuckled aloud.

Bai E froze, and the next moment he erupted with a low roar:

"With me... together... exterminate... all Ancient God Beasts under heaven."

"Naturally, I can."

Li Zhiyi stood with his hands behind his back: "Senior, why not go with me to wander the world of the Ancient God Beasts first, to investigate the weaknesses of these Ancient God Beasts."

Li Zhiyi reached out his hand:

"And then I shall join forces with Senior to kill them!"

Bai E looked at Li Zhiyi, his head shaking constantly, his remaining pupils turbid and blood-red, spinning crazily beneath his eyelids.

He would at times stare fixedly at Li Zhiyi, and at others look vacantly into the void, filled with the baleful energy of madness and confusion.

"Good... good..."

A smile appeared on Li Zhiyi's face, and with a wave of his hand, he and Bai E appeared in the outside world.

It was not that Li Zhiyi was worried he could not kill Bai E.

It was simply because the human world could not withstand Bai E's awakening.

Bai E's physical body was vast and boundless; once fully awakened, it would break the barrier between the Evil Realm and the outside world, shattering the ley lines of the outside world.

By then, it would be a scene of utter devastation, with no one left alive.

Moreover, as for Bai E.

The ending of the story should not be like this.

"Kill, kill them..."

Upon the earth, the two phantom souls of Li Zhiyi and Bai E walked across the shattered land.

Bai E's residual hair was withered like tangled grass, matted with blood scabs and decaying debris, obscuring most of his face.

He saw one Ancient God Beast after another wailing.

But wailing was not enough!

He wanted to exterminate all Ancient God Beasts.

"No rush."

Li Zhiyi smiled faintly:

"Ancient God Beasts all deserve to die, but letting them die so easily is too simple."

Bai E's ruined eyes revealed a ferocious look, but he soon shook his head:

"No... I cannot make mistakes again..."

"Senior, trust me."

Li Zhiyi looked at Bai E:

"I will not let history repeat itself!"

Bai E was stunned, turbid saliva and hoarse growls constantly spilling from between his teeth.

Li Zhiyi chuckled aloud:

"Senior, I also have a younger sister, very well-behaved, but sometimes she is also a bit disobedient."

The light in Bai E's eyes softened.

Li Zhiyi continued, however:

"But what she thinks about in her heart is still how she can make me happy, and make things a little easier for me."

"But I am too busy, sometimes I neglect my younger sister, neglect my father."

Li Zhiyi sighed:

"I know what I am doing is right, but there is absolutely no absolute correctness in the world, wouldn't you say, Senior."

Li Zhiyi looked toward Bai E.

Bai E did not say a word.

Li Zhiyi smiled faintly and continued walking forward.

Finally.

They arrived within a ruined city.

Buildings had collapsed, and living beings were buried within the ground.

"My child, my child!"

A woman ran onto the pile of collapsed architecture and began to frantically dig away bricks and stones with her bare hands.

Her hands were ground down by the stones and pierced by protruding steel bars.

"Hua'er, Ming'er!"

The woman disregarded the pain and continued to call out incessantly.

Bai E saw this scene.

Under his gaze, it was an Ancient God Beast with three pig heads that was frantically digging away the bricks and stones.

"Kill her..."

Bai E let out a low hiss.

"No rush."

Li Zhiyi laughed softly:

"The might of Senior makes heaven and earth tremble; her children are buried within the rubble and have likely already died.

If she is allowed to personally find the corpses of her own children, that would be the greatest punishment for her."

Li Zhiyi looked toward Bai E:

"Wouldn't you say, Senior."

Bai E let out a hoarse hissing sound.

"Compared to the endless suffering Senior has endured, what does this count for?"

Li Zhiyi suddenly shouted in a low voice and patted Bai E on the shoulder:

"One hundred thousand years, one hundred thousand years of suppression, one hundred thousand years of pain!

Just hearing of Senior's deeds makes my heart feel as if it were being sliced by ten thousand knives!"

Li Zhiyi pointed at the desperate woman:

"Compared to Senior, what does this bit of torment count for?"

"Heh heh..."

Bai E's hands spasmed and curled like withered claws, dark red blood caked under his fingernails, and his body trembled uncontrollably:

"Well... said, what does it count for!"

He roared out.

"Hahaha!" Li Zhiyi laughed loudly:

"Satisfying!"

And so, Bai E calmed down.

On that pile of ruined architecture, the woman's hands were already a bloody mess, her fingernails turned outward.

She finally dug away the heaviest stone slab.

"Ming'er!"

The woman let out a shrill shriek.

Below, there were two small figures tightly embracing.

A little boy was using his thin, weak arms to protect his younger sister tightly.

As if at the final moment when the disaster descended, he still wanted to hold up an inch of space for her.

It was just that the little boy had no breath left, and his back was sunken in.

"My child!"

The woman wailed, her hands trembling as she reached out to stroke her children.

She shook them for a long time, but the little boy had no reaction.

Finally, the woman closed her eyes and lifted the little boy's arm.

"Hua'er..."

She called out softly:

"Quickly call for Mom..."

But, there was still no response.

The woman's crying disappeared; she held the two children in her arms, her mouth agape, unable to make a sound.

She was still alive.

But she was dead.

"Good..."

Bai E let out a hoarse hiss:

"Good..."

Bai E clenched his fists, making them crackle.

Li Zhiyi looked over:

"So, Senior, your previous frenzied slaughter was not satisfying at all."

Bai E was stunned and looked at Li Zhiyi.

Li Zhiyi, however, smiled and said:

"Ancient Divine Beasts are also living creatures; they also have sorrow. They must experience sorrow!"

Bai E hissed:

"They... are animals, how could they have sorrow?"

Li Zhiyi pointed at the woman:

"Senior, look, isn't she very sorrowful?"

His broken body trembled violently.

Li Zhiyi continued:

"Back then, Senior's younger sister was easily slaughtered by an Ancient Divine Beast.

Were you not just as sorrowful then as you are now?"

As his voice fell, Bai E raised his head, his mouth wide open:

"Ah... ah..."

As if his throat were being choked by something called sorrow, Bai E could only emit low, wheezing sounds.

The pain of the past, the sorrow of the past, and the despair of the past all came rushing back.

"I will never... never forgive!"

Li Zhiyi smiled:

"So, Senior, you may just enjoy it quietly."

Bai E looked at Li Zhiyi, blood-tears flowing from his broken eyes.

The two of them watched the woman blankly holding her dead child, sitting under the setting sun.

For a very, very long time.

The sun was about to set.

"Senior, let's go, let's go see something better."

Li Zhiyi smiled.

Bai E did not want to leave; his gaze remained fixed on the woman.

"Let's go, Senior," Li Zhiyi said in a soft voice.

"Okay... okay..."

Only then did Bai E turn around and follow Li Zhiyi away.

Yet, the very next moment after they left.

Behind them, a crashing sound suddenly rang out.

Bai E turned his head in a daze.

He saw that the Ancient Divine Beast with three pig heads had suddenly hugged its child and crashed to its death against the broken wall.

Li Zhiyi smiled:

"She must have been in great pain, unable to bear this suffering, which is why she committed suicide."

Bai E's body stiffened.

With a *snap*.

Li Zhiyi patted Bai E on the shoulder.

In an instant, Bai E's eyes widened.

The scene within his vision changed completely.

It was not an Ancient Divine Beast with three heads at all, but a miserable woman and her already dead child.
