Chapter 443
"Very certain."
The bureau chief said, "Two-pronged approach. One group, go right now and bring me that person in charge of the coal mine. The other group, investigate these dead men. You—Old Liu, take your student and go examine the bones."
Meanwhile, Old Liu and Chen Fan entered the autopsy room.
The first step was weighing.
The data obtained matched what Chen Fan had inferred.
Old Liu was speechless. "You figured that out just by looking?"
"Mm, why?"
"Never mind."
Picking up the remaining skull, Old Liu said, "The human body is remarkable. The skull is the hardest to process, but it also preserves the most evidence."
Chen Fan held the skull and said, "Teacher, you said—when a person's skull burns while they're alive, and when it burns after they're dead, what's the difference?"
"I don't know, I haven't researched that."
Chen Fan said, "There are signs of burning inside these bones. Why do I get the feeling it was left there on purpose?"
Left there on purpose?
What a joke.
"How could it possibly be left on purpose? What—you're saying someone else died before this? Isn't that ridiculous? If someone had really died earlier, wouldn't the coal mine people have said something long ago?"
Old Liu's words trailed off.
The bureau chief, who had been sitting to one side, stood up and said, "It seems... we've found that line."
3.5 The person in charge was brought in. Upon questioning, they learned that thirteen people had gone down first, and later one of them never showed up—he had simply gone straight home.
Without even greeting the person in charge.
The person in charge asked this man's brother, and the brother said the man had told him about it himself, so the person in charge didn't bother with it.
After roughly going over Height and Weight and the rest, Old Liu compared the data and found it was a close match.
Then the case would develop in a strange direction.
This person had been murdered, and the killer was very likely one of those twelve people—or possibly all twelve of them.
But the deduction leaned more toward the latter.
Yet Li Tian ruled out revenge.
"It doesn't exist, it can't exist. Because I know this dead man's child—he was at home the whole time, kept saying his father had come back, gave the family a sum of money, said he was done with this family, and left."
A sum of money?
Li Tian said, "Murder for profit? What on earth is inside this coal mine that's worth killing people over? And these things were taken away by someone, because nothing was preserved at the scene during the investigation."
