Still, some fans worried that this mecha blockbuster might be the start of Xu Can's reputation collapsing.

By the conventional wisdom, mecha sci-fi films are trash.

Transformers isn't Hollywood's first mecha film—there are plenty of movies about robots fighting and mechs brawling.

There's always something worse; there's no bottom.

The Pacific, mechs plus monsters—sounds like an idea from some third-rate movie studio, totally not the kind of thing Xu Can would make.

It's completely at odds with the style he'd later develop!

Even John Wick has its own unique flavor, very different from those flashy, cheap Hollywood factory-line popcorn flicks.

Even within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Xu Can carve out a signature style all his own through Jin Gang and the upcoming slate of films.

The trailers for Captain America: The Howling Commandos and Thor have already racked up over a hundred million likes on YouTube.

There's not a trace of factory-line popcorn filmmaking in them.

Pacific Rim, on the other hand, really fits the mold of a Hollywood bad film, which is why many of Xu Can's own fans have expressed concern.

Some fans even started petitions on Twitter and Facebook, begging him not to shoot this assembly-line blockbuster, not to turn common.

"Xu Can, you're a breath of fresh air in Hollywood—please don't let yourself be polluted by assembly-line work!"

Nearly a million fans joined the conversation, and it had already caused a real stir.

So Xu Can stepped in himself and shot a vlog video.

"Relax, this film won't let you down. I'll never be polluted by Hollywood—no matter when, what you'll see is still the same me from the very start."

Within one minute of the vlog going up, views had already broken a million and likes had passed ten thousand.

Taylor Swift, Emma Stone, Anne Hathaway, Nolan, Cameron, Tom Cruise and other big names from inside and outside the industry all liked it.

Scarlett Johansson even shot a special video to back Xu Can.

"He doesn't talk big—he showed me the script. Please trust him, trust us."

Pacific Rim hasn't even officially started shooting, yet the buzz has already been blown through the roof, making it the hottest topic in Hollywood lately.

Fans couldn't help being full of anticipation for this sci-fi mecha film.
