Chapter 447: Headmaster's Office

~6 min read 1,132 words

As he walked, Bai Lang felt a malicious, icy killing aura behind him; his steps did not stop, as if everything were normal. But suddenly his figure flashed, he stepped with force onto the right wall, then leapt to the left wall and, head down and feet up, hooked onto a protrusion on the ceiling of the corridor.

He was very careful not to look with his eyes, because Bai Lang knew the serpent monster existed; seeing its eyes… would be trouble, so he listened with his ears. He heard the sound of scales rubbing, and also a strange hissing, but it seemed to come through a "Wall? Is this thing inside the wall?"

Soon the sounds faded, Bai Lang rolled over and landed, opening his eyes. The corridor was silent, but footsteps came from below. Bai Lang did not wait for the owner of the footsteps to appear; he turned as if swirling a black storm and vanished into the corridor.

The next day he heard that Lady Luo Lisi had been petrified, and a line of text remained on the wall: "The mysterious secret chamber has been opened. Beware the enemy's descendants." Bai Lang, thoughtful, lifted a large piece of bacon and shoved it into his mouth. The incident caused a huge stir; Fei Erqi insisted that Harry had petrified his cat, and Severus Snape tried to drive Harry out of the Gryffindor Quidditch team without success, while others—other young wizards—had split into several factions, all whispering behind Harry.

Bai Lang ate the bacon, and someone sat beside him, "Hey, Mr. Lang En. What do you think?" It was extremely rare for a Slytherin student to dare sit at the Gryffindor long table. Zabini carried a cup of pumpkin juice, watching Bai Lang a bit cautiously.

"Oh, ignore him. Whatever is written in those words doesn't concern us. That fool Draco Malfoy not tolerating Potter is his own business; we just need to spend a leisurely academic life in this school. Mr. Zabini, if I were you, I wouldn't get involved with any side."

Zabini understood, nodded, grabbed a sandwich and returned to the Slytherin table, where a few young wizards immediately gathered around him, speaking softly. Bai Lang only glanced and paid no attention; perhaps because of him, a few Slytherin young wizards also clustered around Zabini……

"Yeah, ignore him…… Harry probably still doesn't realize he's actually a snake‑tongue." Bai Lang was a bit fuzzy on the details, but it didn't matter; understanding snake language wasn't particularly useful. Isn't it now just unclear? Bai Lang thought Harry Potter's personality was basically that of an ordinary child; the pressure of being a savior was too great.

Soon after, during the History of Magic class, Hermione Granger unexpectedly raised the question of the so‑called Chamber. Professor Bin Si, though a bit helpless, still mentioned the legend of the Slytherin Chamber. Bai Lang found it very amusing, clasped his hands together on his chin in a commanding pose. His classmates were intrigued by this rumor; one by one they asked questions—until Professor Bin Si, unable to tolerate it any longer, steered the topic back to the lesson.

"I think he knows, and Dumbledore knows as well…… The so‑called Slytherin Chamber should exist; we just don't know how to open it. As for the monster in the chamber, I think they have some guesses in their minds." Bai Lang thought, personally he was quite interested in the serpent monster; he really wanted to see this dozens‑of‑meters‑long, death‑by‑gaze creature.

After class, Bai Lang, intentionally or not, followed the trio toward the "crime scene", and the trio later also saw Bai Lang. "Hey Lang En, what do you think?" Hermione said, while Ron and Harry looked at Bai Lang with hopeful eyes—though they didn't quite understand, subconsciously they probably thought Bai Lang was a school‑bully type, a kind of person Harry should be more familiar with, because his cousin Da Li was that type.

But Bai Lang was far more polite and reasonable than Da Li, so Harry hadn't considered that aspect yet. "Oh, it definitely wasn't Harry. I don't think he has the ability to petrify Lady Luo Lisi." Bai Lang nodded and began to examine the spot carefully.

"That night I passed by here even earlier than you; Lady Luo Lisi was perfectly normal then." Bai Lang glanced at Hermione and Ron, "I don't have the power to petrify a cat; you know my spell proficiency…" At that moment Harry saw a spider, Ron, frightened of spiders, exchanged a few words with them, and Hermione directly pushed open the girls' lavatory door. "Come in and take a look," she said.

"Oh, I've been meaning to say this. They should at least repair this place; it's not exactly damp, but look at this old, neglected sink…" Bai Lang frowned, stepping over the water stains on the floor. Hermione had already opened the door, "Hello, rosemary."

"Oh, so there's a ghost here after all. Hello, Miss Rosemary." Bai Lang said politely; his wand tapped the floor absentmindedly, clacking. Harry, Ron, and Hermione interrogated the rosemary, and Bai Lang thought it pointless, so he pushed open the lavatory door and left first—luckily, above him, Percy Weasley didn't see him.

Harry and the others must have fallen into a well of self‑justification, not even coming for the nightly cat‑petting. Bai Lang's performance in Transfiguration was still mediocre, but Professor McGonagall, unprecedentedly after class, said to him, "Tonight at 7:30, Headmaster Dumbledore wants to see you, Mr. Lang En. The password is: Cockroach Heap." Her expression wasn't very stern; she looked quite neutral.

"Fine, being summoned by the headmaster for the first time only in second year, I feel I'm already important enough." Bai Lang muttered, and after dinner he went to the headmaster's office—standing before the ugly stone‑carved monster at the door, "I wonder what Old Bee wants with me? If I finish early, I can go see Dio. As for fighting to work off a meal, forget it…"

"Cockroach Heap." Bai Lang spoke the password before the statue. The statue moved aside, revealing a spiraling staircase, and Bai Lang walked up it. The headmaster's office was lined with portraits of past headmasters; their gazes followed Bai Lang's movement. Headmaster Black seemed to appraise Bai Lang with a stern look, apparently displeased with his somewhat lazy attitude.

All the headmasters noticed the wand in Bai Lang's hand; their voices were low, whispering. Dumbledore sat behind his desk, which was covered with all sorts of strange items. "Oh, Mr. Lang En. Mr. Bai Lang." The second half of Dumbledore's sentence was spoken in fairly pure Mandarin, though he still seemed accustomed to speaking English, "How about it, would you like some of this? Do you like honey tea?"
