Chapter 151: You Are My Only Sister
Su Ruo directly voiced the doubt in her heart: "You're not from the Feng family?"
Si Yannian stared at Su Ruo with his peach-blossom eyes, utterly focused, and said solemnly: "I am from the Si family."
The man was naturally bewitchingly handsome; when he looked at you so intently, there was always a soul-captivating beauty that drew people in unconsciously. Su Ruo averted her gaze and silently cursed him as a monster in her heart.
She didn't notice the fleeting smile in Si Yannian's eyes; his little sister was truly adorable.
"What exactly is your relationship with Feng Xiran? Aren't you his brother?"
The man's expression grew even more focused: "You are my only sister."
Seeing that Si Yannian never spoke a word of truth, Su Ruo lost interest in questioning him, picked up her chopsticks and began to eat. Anyway, he had already tasted the food—it wasn't poisonous—so she might as well eat it.
Moreover, Su Ruo was genuinely hungry; because she was too lazy to get a meal, she usually skipped breakfast. Though she had been fine before, now the smell of the food made her truly hungry.
The moment the food entered her mouth, Su Ruo's eyes lit up. At first, when Si Yannian said the chef who cooked for him had once been an Imperial Chef in the palace, she didn't believe him, thinking he was just boasting to placate her. But after eating, she instantly felt his claim was modest.
Su Ruo had never in her life tasted food this delicious—far surpassing the chefs at the State-run Hotel by who knows how many times. After the first bite, she couldn't stop.
Seeing Su Ruo eat happily, Si Yannian's smile deepened; he occasionally served her dishes, and she, in good spirits, didn't refuse.
Su Ruo ate three bowls of rice in a row, only setting down her chopsticks reluctantly when she could eat no more.
Si Yannian chuckled: "If you like it, I'll often have Master Wang cook for you from now on."
Although having Old Man Wang cook comes at a steep price, to Si Yannian it's all worth it as long as his sister likes it—especially since he has nothing but money these days.
The Si family has been in business for generations; as Patriarch Si puts it, they're so poor all they have left is money.
Su Ruo picked up the white handkerchief beside her, wiped her mouth clean, and said: "All right, you may go now."
Si Yannian instantly put on a hurt expression: "Sister, you're truly heartless—eating your fill and then denying anyone."
Su Ruo was momentarily speechless: "Then what do you want?"
Si Yannian quickly switched to a fawning, obedient look and said: "Sister, you're busy; I'll just stay here and watch you—rest assured, I won't disturb you at all."
"No." Su Ruo refused without a second thought.
Si Yannian jumped to his feet, agitated, and asked: "Why?"
Su Ruo didn't even look up as she said: "This is my master's private place; no one is allowed to just come in."
Si Yannian's face instantly broke into a smile as he proudly jiggled the key in his hand.
Su Ruo wondered in her heart: "How do you have the key to the courtyard?"
Si Yannian's smile grew even more triumphant: "You think I got into this courtyard today by some other means?"
Su Ruo felt a sudden toothache, thinking the person before her was utterly insufferable.
Before Su Ruo could strike him, Si Yannian wiped the smile from his face and said: "Old Man Yan previously wanted to take me as his disciple, but I declined. Today, when I mentioned wanting the courtyard's key, he immediately gave it to me and told me to look after you well."
Su Ruo's mouth twitched; although the man before her seemed utterly unreliable, she inexplicably felt he was telling the truth.
Afraid Su Ruo would refuse, Si Yannian immediately put on a pitiful expression: "Sister, rest assured—I'll just stay here and watch you, and I won't disturb you. If I do bother you, you don't even need to tell me; I'll leave at once."
Having come to this point, Su Ruo found it hard to chase him away after all, since Si Yannian's key had been given to him by her master.
Su Ruo ignored Si Yannian any further, walked to the cage, and prepared for today's surgery.
Once the surgery began, Su Ruo immediately became completely absorbed, performing it with her whole heart.
Si Yannian also kept his promise, sitting quietly at the stone table and watching; his focused gaze always gave people the illusion of having stared for ten thousand years at a glance.
Once Su Ruo started surgery, she would become utterly immersed, losing track of time; until she finished one operation and prepared for the next, Si Yannian suddenly reached out and grasped her hand.
Su Ruo looked up in surprise, and Si Yannian said: "It's already noon—let's take a break!"
Su Ruo raised her head, glanced at the sun overhead—sure enough, it was late—and rubbed her slightly sore neck, saying: "Thanks!"
These days, Su Ruo always gets so busy she forgets the time; by the time she goes to get a meal, the cafeteria is empty. Today, thanks to Si Yannian's reminder, going to get food at this time is just right.
Just as Su Ruo was about to pick up her lunch box and head out, Si Yannian said: "The meal is already ready—come over and eat!"
Su Ruo walked in and saw a bowl of fragrant, colorful, and delicious zhajiang noodles placed on the table.
Su Ruo felt a bit surprised: "Did you make this?"
Si Yannian nodded seriously: "I haven't cooked in a long time; my skills are a bit rusty—try it and tell me how it tastes."
Su Ruo felt even more astonished, because Si Yannian seemed the very type of carefree, playboy young master—yet he actually could cook.
She picked up a mouthful and tasted it; the flavor was actually not bad. Although it couldn't compare to Master Wang's skill, it was far better than what an ordinary person could manage—a home-cooked dish one could eat without ever growing tired of.
Seeing that Su Ruo didn't dislike it, Si Yannian felt even happier; he silently vowed to learn cooking properly from now on—his sister was too thin, and he intended to fatten her up until she was white and plump.
After Su Ruo finished her meal and was about to wash the dishes, Si Yannian snatched the chopsticks and bowl from her hands as soon as she picked them up.
Si Yannian hurriedly urged her: "Go rest; I'll handle this."
Si Yannian's attitude was firm; with just two sets of chopsticks, Su Ruo didn't insist further. She sat in the rattan chair under the tree shade, the warm sun bathing her, and soon fell asleep—having performed surgeries all morning, it had drained her greatly.
After tidying the kitchen and stepping out, Si Yannian saw the already-asleep Su Ruo; dappled sunlight filtered through the leaves onto her, evoking a feeling of tranquil, timeless peace.
Si Yannian's eyes instantly reddened, for he had waited for this moment for nearly twenty years.
Si Yannian gently approached Su Ruo, wanting to touch her brows and eyes with his fingertip, but ultimately restrained himself.
Merely gazing at Su Ruo's peaceful sleeping face, he silently swore in his heart that this time he would surely protect her well—even if it meant death, he would absolutely never let her suffer any harm again.
Seeing the fine beads of sweat on Su Ruo's forehead, Si Yannian fetched a fan and gently waved it to cool her.
A little rabbit darted through the grass, butterflies flitted among the flowers, the cicadas' chirring from the trees seemed a bit quieter than usual, and everything appeared so beautiful…
If time could stop, Si Yannian would probably wish this moment to last forever.
But time keeps rolling onward, and in the end nothing can ever be exactly as he wishes.
