Chapter 258: Having Eyes but Not Recognizing Mount Tai

~7 min read 1,260 words

Su Ruo finished familiarizing herself with the pharmacy, then returned to her office. Chen Dan had something to do and left first; before leaving, she reminded Su Ruo to call her if anything came up.

Su Ruo smiled and nodded in agreement. After Chen Dan left, she cleaned the treatment room again, then took out a medical book from her space and began reading.

Su Ruo read for an entire morning. Chen Dan was right—there really weren't many patients here, so she needed to find something to pass the time.

Not until evening did Su Ruo see her first patient—a soldier who had injured his arm during training.

The soldiers who had trained with him brought him over, his bones displaced, saying: "Doctor, please quickly help our squad leader take a look."

The injured soldier looked to be in his thirties or forties; from the pain his face was ashen, his forehead covered in cold sweat.

Upon seeing Su Ruo, his eyes were full of doubt and disbelief. When she moved to examine his arm, he immediately said: "Little girl, you can't handle this injury—quickly call your master."

"I am the doctor!" Su Ruo said, then lifted the man's arm to examine it. But as soon as she touched his injured arm, he let out a painful groan.

"In a month I have to compete in the military region's Grand Competition—are you capable or not? If not, hurry and call your master."

The few soldiers who had brought him heard this, their faces instantly turning grave. If their squad leader couldn't compete due to injury, it would definitely affect their unit's score, and possibly even put their squad leader at risk of being reassigned.

After all, their squad leader had held that position for ten years; if he couldn't advance further, he would likely be forced to leave the service and return home.

After Su Ruo carefully examined his injury, she coldly said: "You don't even know if you can keep your arm, yet you're still thinking about the competition."

The man, hearing Su Ruo's words, became anxious: "You must heal my arm; I will definitely compete in the Grand Competition a month from now."

Su Ruo directly ignored the man's words—she wasn't his subordinate, so why should she obey his orders?

But Su Ruo's attitude instantly angered the man: "Did you even hear what I said?"

Su Ruo coldly replied: "I can't do it—go find someone more capable."

The man's face flushed red with anger at Su Ruo's words; he was about to say more when Song Jingyu strode over.

The man, who had just looked resolute, instantly reddened at the eyes upon seeing Song Jingyu: "Regimental Commander, I've embarrassed you."

The other soldiers accompanying him also lowered their heads, their spirits low.

Song Jingyu didn't look at the man, but turned to Su Ruo and asked: "How is his injury?"

When facing Song Jingyu, Su Ruo's attitude softened a bit; adhering to her professional ethics, she briefly described his condition.

"It's somewhat serious—not just his arm; his waist injury is also severe. If he rashly joins high-intensity training again, it would be dangerous."

Upon hearing Su Ruo's words, the man became agitated: "Regimental Commander, don't listen to her—this doctor is young and unskilled, just trying to scare people. I'm fine; I will definitely be able to compete in the Grand Competition a month from now."

Song Jingyu's face turned stern as he said: "Sun Daizhi, correct your attitude—Doctor Su is the best doctor here. If even she can't cure you, no one can."

Sun Daizhi, after being shouted at by Song Jingyu, dared not speak further, but he kept his neck stiff, his eyes full of distrust toward Su Ruo.

"Since you think my medical skills are lacking, then go find someone more capable!" Su Ruo said, sitting there with a dismissive posture.

Seeing this, Sun Daizhi wanted to leave; he had no confidence in Su Ruo's medical skill, as people say Chinese medicine improves with age, and Su Ruo being so young likely hasn't even finished her training—what could she have learned? She'd just be spouting alarmist nonsense here.

Song Jingyu, however, gave Sun Daizhi an icy look and said: "Apologize!"

Sun Daizhi's face turned crimson from being held back; in this world, the person he most trusted and admired was Song Jingyu, but asking him to apologize to such a yellow-haired girl was something he truly couldn't do.

The few soldiers saw Song Jingyu's increasingly icy expression and fell silent like cicadas in winter, not knowing what to do.

"No need—I'm young and don't deserve an apology from Squad Leader Sun." Su Ruo said without any expression.

Song Jingyu knew Su Ruo was genuinely angry; seeing Sun Daizhi still standing there with his neck stiff, his face turned even colder, and he directly placed his right foot on the stool.

In front of everyone, he rolled up his pant leg, revealing a leg covered in scars.

"Two years ago, I left the unit for reasons you all know. This injured leg of mine was healed by Doctor Su. Without her, I couldn't possibly be standing here now, yet you doubt her medical skill."

Sun Daizhi and the few soldiers, hearing Song Jingyu's words, all stared at Su Ruo in shock; they knew how severe the Regimental Commander's leg injury had been back then.

All the doctors had said that leg would make walking difficult, and he could never return to training.

But what they didn't expect was that a year ago the Regimental Commander returned, and he was even stronger than before.

They never imagined that the person who healed their Regimental Commander's leg would be this little girl standing before them.

They were shocked deep down, but they also knew Song Jingyu would never lie.

For a moment everyone looked at Su Ruo, their eyes filled with complex emotions; if what Song Jingyu said was true, then the only one here who could quickly heal Sun Daizhi's arm was indeed Su Ruo herself.

Sun Daizhi's mouth twitched as he wanted to apologize to Su Ruo, but before he could speak, she cut him off.

"No need—forcing things doesn't work; since you don't trust me, there's no need to push yourself."

One of the soldiers spoke up: "Doctor Su, sorry—we were too anxious, which caused us to offend you; we really didn't mean it."

That soldier had delicate, handsome features, big eyes, looked well-behaved, and made people instinctively soften their hearts.

But Su Ruo had a heart of iron and stone: "I can't heal this arm."

After saying that, Su Ruo continued flipping through the medical book in her hand, ignoring them completely.

Actually, Sun Daizhi's injury could be treated by other doctors as well—it might just involve a bit more suffering, but it wasn't absolutely necessary to rely on her.

The only thing Su Ruo never expected was that, after hearing her words, Sun Daizhi would go straight to kneeling before her.

Sun Daizhi's kneeling startled everyone; the few soldiers rushed to help him up, but he shook them off.

"Doctor Su, I have eyes but fail to recognize Mount Tai—I mistook a pearl for a fish eye. Please forgive me this once; the Grand Competition a month from now is very important to me, I must participate no matter what. If you can heal my arm, I am willing to pay any price."

Su Ruo was completely stunned by Sun Daizhi's action; she couldn't understand whether a single competition could really be that important.
