Chapter 25: Leap into the Flames, and I Shall Grant You Sanctuary!

~4 min read 617 words

The black-robed female mage's expression didn't change as her fingers kept waving.

She had learned her lesson — no longer did she keep firing such large fireballs, but instead kept launching small fireballs to blast apart the oncoming bones.

Though her magic wasn't instant-cast, with the boost of her wand, the speed at which she cast wasn't slow.

Seeing this, that sinister voice began to interfere with her with sound while starting to make some small moves of its own.

On some of the intact bones, black mist-like things began to appear.

When the female mage's fireballs struck them, their effectiveness dropped sharply, forcing her to use far more powerful fireballs to attack those relatively intact bones.

"You little girl, you don't look very old, yet you actually have the level of a Second Rank. But compared to this old man, it's still far from enough. I won't play with you anymore. Once I catch you, I'll have a taste of you first, then dissect your body…"

While the sinister voice spoke, on the ground not far from the female mage, a jet-black skeleton crawled up from underground.

This skeleton held a bone weapon and strode toward the female mage in great steps.

Seeing this, the female mage sent a large fireball straight at that jet-black skeleton.

"Boom!"

Her fireball magic came with its own explosive effect, detonating across that black skeleton's body.

That jet-black skeleton's forward stride faltered for a moment.

But when the flames faded, not a single hair on its body was harmed.

"Hehehe, Blackie, kill her!"

The sinister voice let out a smug laugh.

The female mage's face changed drastically at the sight.

That black skeleton kept closing in, yet her magic couldn't do a thing to it.

The female mage kept retreating, and in the blink of an eye she was nearly back to the flames.

"Hehe, pray to your god — maybe it will hear your prayer. But a Second Rank mage, how could the Shenzenme Society ever answer you?"

The mocking voice of the necromancer, hidden somewhere unknown, drifted over.

The female mage did not pray.

She held her wand aloft with both hands, muttering an incantation under her breath.

She was preparing to cast an even more powerful spell.

A Second Rank mage was already terrifyingly formidable in terms of magical power and spell might.

But she was still a low-rank mage, unable to endure a prolonged battle.

So powerful spells were generally kept as trump cards.

After several seconds of chanting, that black skeleton was less than two meters from her.

The female mage's wand thrust forward sharply, and immediately a pillar of fire shot out from the wand, slamming into the black skeleton.

The black skeleton was instantly swallowed whole by flames, and was also sent staggering backward.

"Not a bad spell, though."

The necromancer's "hehe" laugh rang out.

Two seconds later, the flames faded, revealing that the black skeleton's ribcage had three ribs burned clean through.

Other parts had taken damage here and there as well.

But the female mage's face had gone pale — she had barely any magic power left.

"Your magic power is almost drained, isn't it? Time to end this. Let me show you the true charm of necromancy…"

As the necromancer's voice fell, several more black skeletons crawled up from beneath the bone-covered ground, completely cutting off the female mage's retreat.

The female mage's face went even paler. Facing a life-or-death crisis, she gripped her wand, ready to make one last stand.

At that moment, a mysterious, majestic voice from nowhere rang out inside her mind:

"I, the Lord of Flames! Leap into the fire, and I shall grant you sanctuary!"
