Chapter 180: Li Quezi: You

~7 min read 1,245 words

"I remember I should have smashed that piece of glass before." Ye Cheng pointed at the window of Li Quezi's shop.

"It seems I also climbed over the courtyard wall, stole instant noodles, uh, I probably stole a few of your chickens too."

"Then, I probably used bubble gum to plug your door lock a few times."

"Also, I seem to have put copper wire in your electricity box."

Ye Cheng, while looking at Li Quezi's shop, slowly recalled, his voice not loud, but Li Quezi heard it and felt his heart pound.

Ye Cheng, back then, he had done all of these!

He really did all of these, damn it!

Indeed, he was very sure.

But today is obviously not the time to talk about this.

"Ah, those are just small things, not worth mentioning, they're in the past." Li Quezi waved his hand, trying to sound magnanimous.

"Ah, they're just small things." Ye Cheng suddenly raised his voice, saying with an innocent face, "So can I still... in the future..."

Seeing Ye Cheng's gaze, Li Quezi immediately surrendered, "No, no, I know what you want to ask, I'll say, I'll say, okay."

Ye Cheng nodded, looking at him, without speaking.

Li Quezi nervously glanced outside, then lowered his voice and said, "Your fish trap, right? I didn't see who did it, but yesterday the Village Chief's two nephews bought a pack of Zhonghua cigarettes here, seeming quite happy to have made money."

"Chen Zhangfu, Chen Zhanglong?" Ye Cheng asked softly.

Li Quezi nodded, "It's them. When they went out, I paused for a moment, they were proudly saying, look at that kid, does he still dare to be so arrogant, they ruined his fish trap, let's see what he can do."

"Later I went to check myself, and there your fish trap lay on the beach, so I guess it was them who did it."

Ye Cheng nodded, recalling that at the previous villagers' meeting, those two brothers also jumped out and argued with him; if it weren't for Xiao Hu and his older brother being present, who knows what would have happened.

These two are actually from Chen Jinhai's own clan, so taking revenge on him is quite natural.

Seeing Ye Cheng not speak, Li Quezi hastily put on a smiling face and said, "Lao Er, actually it's nothing, they're just jealous of you, just small things."

A sharp light flashed in Ye Cheng's eyes, frightening Li Quezi into swallowing his next words.

"Give me two more packs of Zhonghua cigarettes, I'll pay you." Ye Cheng said.

Li Quezi knew this was thanks for providing information, so he wasn't going to be polite; having already spoken, he directly took three packs down, putting on a shy smile and said, "Only three packs left, why don't you take them all?"

Ye Cheng rolled his eyes, "Just now who said I don't need this many?"

"Just now was just now, now is now."

"Fine, leave them as they are."

Ye Cheng lightly tapped the counter, six cigarettes for a piece of information, not expensive, better than holding in anger.

Li Quezi thoughtfully handed him a black plastic bag to hold them, then repeatedly clasped his hands and said, "Lao Er, you must absolutely not say I told you."

"Got it, you just have one good leg, I won't harm you."

After saying that, Ye Cheng flung the cigarettes onto his back and left.

After leaving, he went around to Xiao Hu's place; Xiao Hu looked at Ye Cheng, shook his head and said,

"Brother, my parents also don't know who did it."

"I understand, grab a stick, let's go." Ye Cheng said calmly.

"Oh." Xiao Hu turned and brought out two iron pipes.

Ye Cheng glanced and said, "Switch to wooden sticks."

"Wooden sticks?" Xiao Hu froze for a moment, his face immediately turning solemn.

Having understood Ye Cheng's recent behavior, he knew iron pipes were mostly for intimidation, while wooden sticks meant they intended to fight.

"Wooden sticks aren't weapons, iron pipes are; let's go, let's tell Uncle and Aunt."

"Okay."

Xiao Hu went inside to greet his parents, said he wouldn't come back for dinner tonight, then followed Ye Cheng out.

Xiao Hu's parents stood at the doorway watching their backs.

"Damn it, I'm going too." Xiao Hu's father suddenly threw away his cigarette and said, seeing his son definitely going to fight, he couldn't rest easy.

"Then I'm going too." Wang Aunt gritted her teeth, "At least I can suppress them with momentum."

After Ye Cheng and Xiao Hu walked out, Xiao Hu asked, "Brother, who did it?"

"Chen Zhangfu, Chen Zhanglong."

"Fuck! It's those two bastards; at the last meeting they already wanted to get physical, brother, we can't let them off easy this time."

"I know, so I switched to wooden sticks; be careful later, if they hit the head it's costly, better to aim for hands and feet." Ye Cheng said expressionlessly.

As they were walking, Ye Cheng's phone rang; it was his older brother Ye Guowei.

Ye Cheng answered, speaking in a low voice,

"Older brother."

Ye Guowei's voice hoarse, "Where are you?"

"Oh, I'm with Xiao Hu." Ye Cheng didn't say where he was going, because if a fight really broke out he didn't want his older brother involved.

"I'll come over too; you wait for me, tell me where you are." Ye Guowei insisted.

Ye Cheng fell silent for a moment, then suddenly broke into a smile, "Older brother, we're going to Chen Zhangfu and Chen Zhanglong."

"Alright, I'll be there right away."

Ye Guowei said that and then hung up.

Xiao Hu glanced at Ye Cheng, a bit puzzled why he called Ye Guowei.

Ye Cheng shook his head, "He's also my older brother."

The two didn't speak further, but continued toward Hou Village; along the way, a few uncles and aunts came out to take a look, but seeing Ye Cheng and Xiao Hu in their usual village-ruffian guise, they were too familiar with it and promptly retreated.

"Xiao Hu, do you think we've been too kind lately?" Ye Cheng remarked wistfully.

When I was a village loafer, I seemed to live carefree; although sometimes I got blocked at the door and scolded, nobody dared to bully me like that.

Now they dare to smash my fish trap secretly; do they really think I've become a good person?

Ye Cheng dragged a stick and walked to an intersection; further ahead were the homes of Chen Zhangfu and Chen Zhanglong.

He paused a moment; the autumn wind blew, and Ye Guowei came from another path, holding a wooden stick.

Ye Cheng laughed; indeed, the two brothers are still very in sync.

"A Cheng, let's go." Ye Guowei patted Ye Cheng and walked ahead.

Chen Zhangfu and Chen Zhanglong are two brothers; their father, Chen Jinli, is of the same generation as Chen Jinhai and lives next door to him.

Ye Cheng and the two others stood at Chen Jinli's door; Ye Cheng was still thinking how to proceed—whether to charge straight in or first shout something.

Unexpectedly, Ye Guowei kicked Chen Jinli's main door.

With a clang, the iron door was kicked open.

A yellow dog rushed out, barking furiously at the three—woof woof woof!

Ye Cheng swung his stick and struck; the yellow dog didn't expect Ye Cheng to actually hit it, yelped in fright, tucked its tail, and ran into the yard.
