Chapter 184: Isn't there meat? Why aren't we getting any?

~7 min read 1,217 words

Chief Liu went out for a trip and came back after about half an hour.

I've already told them your conditions; there's no problem—let's everyone sign a memorandum.

Fine.

Chief Liu had the detainees gather; everyone now looked embarrassed, their earlier arrogance gone, and each pressed their handprint on the memorandum.

The money from the fish trap that Chen Jinli sold was also brought over, clearing the debt at once.

Ye Cheng finished counting the money, slipped it into his pocket, and said to Chief Liu,

Well then, Chief Liu, we're leaving.

After saying that, he intended to take Xiao Hu and the others and leave.

Unexpectedly, Chief Liu suddenly spoke up: 'Who said you could leave?'

Ye Cheng turned, looking astonished at Chief Liu, and said, 'No, we've already settled everything.'

'We've settled it, but shouldn't you learn a lesson from fighting?' Chief Liu said sternly, 'You'll all stay one night in the detention room to gain some sense of law.'

No, Chief Liu, didn't we already agree on that?' Ye Cheng looked at him speechlessly. 'Damn, you're playing dirty.'

Chief Liu waved his hand, looking pleased as his subordinates locked up several people, then clapped his hands,

'Kid, you think you can play me? You're still too green.'

If we don't give them a lesson for this brawl, who knows what it might escalate to next time.

And then there's Ye Cheng, all smug and scheming—damn, it pisses me off; this is my turf, let me show you who's boss.

Even after being locked up, Ye Cheng was still a bit dazed—this isn't right, how did I end up in here?

'Brother, what are you doing? Isn't it normal to be detained after a fight?' Xiao Hu sat honestly in the detention room, huddled.

'A Cheng, just stay locked up for a bit; it'll be over soon, sit awhile.' Ye Guowei also didn't care—fighting means detention, that's right.

Ye Cheng thought it over, figured it's fine, and decided to just rest for a day.

They fought in the morning, finished by noon, and next door were some members of the Chen Family.

'Come on, meal's here.' A police officer pushed in a food cart.

'This is yours.' The officer handed the Chen Family side a few disposable meal boxes, each containing just some pickled vegetables and boiled cabbage.

Chen Zhangfu looked at it, his eyes practically turning green—how are we supposed to eat this?

He glanced at the food cart, immediately became uneasy, and pointed at the other basins inside, saying,

'Hey, isn't there meat in there? Why aren't we getting any?'

In the cart, besides the meal boxes, there were several enamel basins from home, piled high with meat that couldn't be covered, the aroma wafting everywhere.

'Those were sent by their families; if you want food, have your families bring it. Besides, it's just one day—eat a little less and it'll pass; why make a fuss?'

As he spoke, the officer pushed the cart over to Ye Cheng's side, saying enviously, 'Hey, yours is practically pig feed.'

'This is kelp spare‑rib soup and stir‑fried chili meat, plus stir‑fried clams—your wife sent this.' The officer pointed at Ye Guowei.

'Damn, sister‑in‑law, you're awesome.' Ye Cheng stood up; it's so boring in here, having something to eat is always good.

'This is braised pork intestines, sent by a woman surnamed Zhang, who said it's for Ye Cheng.' The officer glanced at Ye Cheng.

'A Zhang? Who's that?' Ye Cheng wondered.

'She said if you don't know, just say it's from Widow Zhang.' The officer relayed that calmly.

Er...

Ye Cheng scratched his head, really couldn't recall how that Zhang woman was related to Widow Zhang.

Speaking of which, this is the police station, all locals; if it were in the city, it'd be absolutely impossible to get food sent in.

Now it's fine—our side is feasting, the smell unstoppable, while over there the Chen brothers are eating pickled veggies and radish, feeling utterly blocked.

Damn, if you've got money to eat, just eat—why do you have to do it right next to us?

At dinner, Jiang Yunxiang specially stewed a pot of pig's trotters and brought it in, while Widow Zhang fried a few side dishes; the three felt they were living the good life.

Mainly, after eating, they didn't need to wash dishes—just handed them to the officer to take out.

This treatment is even better than what the gods enjoy.

The night passed uneventfully; aside from the hard bunk, feeling overly full, and Xiao Hu's loud snoring, everything else was fine.

At 8 a. m. the next morning, Chief Liu released them.

Jiang Yunxiang was already waiting at the door; seeing the three come out, she felt heartbroken.

'You all right? Nothing happened in there? Nobody hit you?'

Ye Cheng looked speechless. 'Sister‑in‑law, what era is this? Still feudal? You get beaten as soon as you go in.'

'It's fine, let's go home.' Ye Guowei patted his wife to comfort her.

'Oh, Widow Zhang was supposed to come too, but she registered today and has to take Xiao Hu to the hospital.' Jiang Yunxiang suddenly said, 'The aunt's still a good person—yesterday I told her not to cook, yet she insisted on bringing the food anyway.'

Ye Cheng nodded; Widow Zhang still has a conscience—I once lent her 30,000 and haven't collected interest.

Chen Jinli also showed up to pick up his two sons; the two groups glanced at each other, snorted, and went their separate ways.

The Chen father and son took the bus back, while Jiang Yunxiang had hired a taxi.

'Sister‑in‑law, nice—you can hire a taxi these days.' Ye Cheng gave a thumbs‑up.

'Why spend so much money?' Ye Guowei muttered quietly.

Jiang Yunxiang gave him a look: 'You're going to fight; if you win, you're not taking the bus—of course you hire a taxi.'

'I'm fat, I took the front seat.' While the three were still chatting, Xiao Hu had already snatched the passenger seat.

'Damn, show some decency—let the sister‑in‑law sit up front.' Ye Cheng moved to pull Xiao Hu down.

'Forget it, you three guys won't fit in the back.' Jiang Yunxiang grabbed Ye Cheng, 'I'll sit in the back—just right.'

Although the taxi wasn't luxurious, it was still practical and roomy inside; Ye Cheng and Ye Guowei's couple squeezed into the back, fitting just right.

'Let's go home—wash up with pomelo leaves to shake off the bad luck.' Jiang Yunxiang murmured in the car.

"My water heater came straight down—where did the pomelo leaves come from?" Ye Cheng interjected.

"Then pour it out and wash it in the bucket; anyway it definitely needs to be used, got it?" Jiang Yunxiang glanced at the lazy little brother-in-law, decisively dispelling his idea.

The car stopped as soon as it reached the village entrance, not because it couldn't go in, but because there were people.

A dozen or so people were standing at the village entrance chatting; when they saw the taxi approaching, they all stood up and stood at the intersection watching, making the taxi driver dare not drive past.

"Big brother, could it be that they're blocking us here?" Ye Cheng lowered his head and looked out through the front windshield, but couldn't make out who they were.
