Chapter 198: Tomorrow We're Going to Buy a House

~7 min read 1,278 words

Dou Dou, upon recognizing the number himself, shouted first, "This is 2, it's two dollars."

Jiang Yunxiang gently tugged her son, "She's an adult; two dollars isn't enough, and she's a foreigner—I'd guess she'd need 200 dollars."

Ye Cheng looked at Ye Guowei, "Big brother, what do you think?"

Ye Guowei scratched his head, "How would I know? They say a meal in the city can cost tens of thousands; this old guy is a celebrity—maybe he ate 20,000?"

Ye Cheng smiled mysteriously, lowered his voice, and said word by word, "200 million!"

"What? 200 million?" Ye Guowei and Jiang Yunxiang were so startled they almost jumped up, "200 million for a meal?"

Dou Dou looked at Ye Cheng, "Uncle Second, is 200 million bigger or 20,000 bigger?"

The little kid hasn't learned about 'hundred million' yet; he only knows that a ten-thousand-yuan household is big.

"It's 200 million; what they're eating isn't rice, it's added value. The coconut crab I sold today is only a few hundred dollars per jin, the surplus is added emotional value—so many people call him handsome, that's how he makes money!"

While the others were still stunned and hadn't reacted, Ye Cheng slowly finished his noodles, and Jiang Yunxiang was still there counting on her fingers, trying to see where the 'hundred million' is.

"Big brother, sister-in-law, I came today to say we're going to buy a house in the city tomorrow."

"What? Buy a house?" Jiang Yunxiang's finger stopped right on the 3, bent and unmoving.

Ye Guowei also opened his mouth wide, staring at Ye Cheng.

Ye Cheng looked at the two of them, nodded calmly, and said, "Ah, buying a house—what's the problem?"

Jiang Yunxiang glanced at Ye Guowei, looking like she wanted to speak but held back; Ye Guowei glared at her, otherwise she would have spoken.

Dou Dou sat there with a puzzled expression, "Dad, Mom, are you guys guessing a riddle?"

Seeing the two straining to communicate with their eyes, Ye Cheng couldn't take it anymore and spoke directly,

"Well, big brother, sister-in-law, it's just to buy a school-district house for Dou Dou; if it's cheap, I'll buy one for myself too."

As soon as Ye Cheng's words left his mouth, Jiang Yunxiang's face lit up with joy, while Ye Guowei wore an unmoved expression; he coughed once, intending to speak.

Knowing his older brother, once he started talking he'd surely launch into a long-winded spiel, so Ye Cheng hurried to stop him—this monk-chanting, clothes-wearing monkey act is unbearable, let alone for himself.

"Big brother, rest assured, the house will be registered under your names, but it'll still be mine; I'll repay the money—it's just purely to get Dou Dou into school, that should be fine, right?"

Ye Guowei smacked his lips, as if he'd been silenced, with nothing left to say.

Ye Cheng quickly turned to Jiang Yunxiang, "Sister-in-law, let's go—shall we head to the city together tomorrow?"

"Ah, I'm coming too?" Jiang Yunxiang's face was full of excitement mixed with a little embarrassment.

"Go ahead—if Dou Dou ends up wanting to study there, you might still have to live there; you should at least take a look."

"Live in the city?" Jiang Yunxiang looked troubled, "I don't know anyone in the city, and besides, there are too many rules—I'm not used to it."

"No problem—I'll buy you a car later; driving over takes just half an hour, and we can do the drop-off and pick-up every day." Ye Cheng said offhand.

"Drive to pick up the kid? No way—our family isn't some official's kid, yet we'd be driving him to school." Jiang Yunxiang waved her hands repeatedly; in this era, very few kids commute by car—most walk, and only officials drive.

Not to mention the future, especially after electric cars appear—vehicles will be everywhere, basically every household will have one, and driving kids to school will be utterly commonplace.

"A Cheng, your sister-in-law can't drive either; besides, buying a car costs a lot—it's not worth it just for Dou Dou's schooling." Ye Guowei said solemnly.

His older brother is such an old fogey—hard to reason with for now, and Ye Cheng couldn't be bothered to continue.

"Then let's talk about it later; for now, sister-in-law, you come with me to the city tomorrow to look at houses—would that work?"

"Okay, okay—I've never bought a house before; how do we do it?"

Jiang Yunxiang rarely goes to the city; usually she just strolls the malls, so asking her to buy a house leaves her feeling a bit dazed.

"Oh, sister-in-law, buying a house is just like buying vegetables—you pick what you like, pay, then finish half the paperwork; it's simple, the agent will handle it, just come along with me tomorrow."

"Alright, alright, then I'll follow you tomorrow—I'll listen to you." Jiang Yunxiang said, her eyes already beginning to drift, the corners of her mouth slightly turning up.

Ye Guowei saw that the two had already settled the matter, so he naturally chose to stay quiet—his younger brother now has big ideas, so he'll just go along.

But he still glanced at Jiang Yunxiang and said, "Um, tomorrow bring the card—A Cheng might not have enough money."

"Brother, no need—I have enough money."

"Let your sister-in-law bring it; the family has some money now." Ye Guowei stated firmly, and Ye Cheng couldn't be bothered to argue.

According to Donghai Shi's housing prices, it's only over a thousand—enough to buy a house.

After finishing the meal, Ye Cheng called Li Yong again to arrange renting a car to go into the city tomorrow.

That night, Jiang Yunxiang suffered from insomnia.

Thinking about going into the city, or rather buying a house, she found it a bit hard to sleep.

She shoved awake the snoring Ye Guowei, "Do you think I should wear my New Year's clothes tomorrow? If I dress too shabbily, won't I embarrass myself?"

Ye Guowei was sleeping soundly; being shaken awake by his wife, he thought it was some major affair, only to find after a while it was just about what clothes to wear.

He turned over and said in a muffled voice, "What you wear doesn't matter; many bosses at the Matou dress ordinarily, yet they're still rich."

Hearing her husband's perfunctory remark, Jiang Yunxiang complained, "That won't do—I'm A Cheng's sister-in-law; if I dress poorly, won't I embarrass A Cheng?"

"Then just dress a little better." Ye Guowei, his eyelids heavy with sleep, just wanted to fall asleep soon.

"But if I dress up, won't it look too deliberate?"

"Then just dress normally."

"But tomorrow's such a big event—being too ordinary doesn't seem appropriate either."

Ye Guowei rolled his eyes, silently cursing Ye Cheng: "You couldn't have waited until tomorrow to say this; saying it so late at night, even your brother can't sleep."

Ye Guowei didn't know what time Jiang Yunxiang fell asleep, but when he got up early he saw her with two dark circles, already trying on clothes.

Seeing this, Ye Guowei felt a headache coming on—soon he might be dragging himself to ask which looks better; this question is harder than the exam questions back then. He picked up his clothes, put on his shoes, and said,

"'Um, I'm going to Matou to grab some breakfast today—you don't need to cook.'"

Having said that, he bolted away as if escaping.

Jiang Yunxiang didn't pay much mind, responding offhand, "Today I have no inclination to cook at all."

Ye Cheng came over at eight o'clock, and Dou Dou was still in bed.

"'Sister-in-law, what's with this outfit?' Ye Cheng looked at Jiang Yunxiang's attire, a bit speechless."
