Chapter 69: The Oriole Behind
There was no time to bicker with them now. Taking one wall each was the best choice.
Blue Sky Genetics' main market was E-rank Gene Chains. As for higher grades, they lacked the equipment and resources to research them.
The average price of an E-rank Gene Chain hovered around one million. Since Blue Sky Genetics was a small local company, the price would be pushed down even further. However, with roughly three hundred vials on a single wall, it still amounted to around three hundred million Star Coins.
Of course, they could not sell them at market value on the black market. They would likely have to offer a forty percent discount, bringing the total down to about two hundred million Star Coins.
This was already a massive fortune... at least in the eyes of Li Yu and Old Ghost.
As for the purple Gene Chain resting in the center of the warehouse, both of them maintained a tacit understanding not to mention it.
It was a separately stored Gene Chain, clearly on a completely different level from those on the walls. However, now was not the time to fight over it.
Old Ghost pulled a palm-sized white metal block from his coat. With a light tap, it unfolded on the ground, expanding dozens of times over until it transformed into a sizable chest.
"A Space Folding Device..." Li Yu inwardly cursed his own oversight. He had completely forgotten that he didn't own such a gadget. How was he supposed to carry away an entire wall of goods?
"Do you happen to have another Space Folding Device?" Li Yu asked with a bashful smile. "I'd like to borrow one..."
"Borrow?" Old Ghost was rendered speechless. This was practically a brazen robbery!
"Forget it if you don't..." Li Yu sighed heavily. "It's a pity about all these Gene Chains in this warehouse. Since I can't take them, then..."
"Stop right there..." Veins bulged on Old Ghost's forehead. If you can't carry your wall, what does that have to do with mine?!
Li Yu was issuing a naked threat. If Old Ghost didn't hand one over... no one was taking anything.
"Evie... come here..." Old Ghost waved his hand, summoning a subordinate. He took a white metal block from him and tossed it to Li Yu.
"This..." Li Yu stared fixedly at the subordinate and suddenly said, "This must belong to Taotie and Sister Yao, right?"
Old Ghost's heart skipped a beat. He had secretly ordered his subordinate to loot their corpses. How did Li Yu know?
"Hand it over. There's another one. These are my spoils of war..." Li Yu kept his face completely blank, instantly becoming righteous and demanding.
Wearing a deeply soured expression, Old Ghost waved his hand in defeat. The subordinate immediately pulled out another block and handed it over to Li Yu.
Space Folding Devices like these had a clear market price. Folding one cubic meter cost one million Star Coins. Each metal block could fold five cubic meters, making them worth five million Star Coins.
Unlike Third Fatty's Folding Apartment, these devices could not be used to store extraneous items.
Expanding the device, Li Yu began stuffing the Gene Chains inside...
Gugu Chicken Gene Chains made up the vast majority, which meant the total value of the entire wall took another heavy discount.
Both of them moved at blinding speed. By the time faint gunshots echoed from outside, they had already swept the walls clean.
"These items can only stay inside a Space Folding Device for a month. Any longer, and they'll start degrading. Sell them as quickly as possible,"
Old Ghost kindly reminded him, his mood vastly improved. However, his eyes frequently darted toward the lone purple Gene Chain.
A small line of text was projected from the hovering metal pedestal, introducing the item: Purple Thunder Rat Gene Chain, D-rank Gene Chain.
"Rumors said that Blue Sky Genetics wasn't satisfied with the status quo and was seeking a breakthrough. I didn't expect them to have actually succeeded," Old Ghost muttered in genuine surprise.
"This is mine..." Li Yu stepped right up without blushing or skipping a beat, fully intending to pocket the vial.
"What do you mean it's yours?" Old Ghost was immediately alarmed. "The Lightning Element is inherently a rare elemental attribute! This specific gene is a top-tier D-rank Gene Chain! The market price is easily close to thirty million Star Coins!"
"You think you can just walk away with it on your word alone?"
"My word isn't enough? Then what about adding this?" Li Yu drew the Silver-White Holy Spear and aimed it squarely at Old Ghost.
"You can't kill me..." Old Ghost's heart pounded wildly, but he forced himself to remain composed.
"You can try me..." Li Yu remained expressionless, simply keeping the gun steady.
Old Ghost couldn't make up his mind. Given this guy's ruthless track record, if he had enough bullets, he definitely would have fired by now.
But... the prolonged hesitation made him highly suspicious...
'Just how many bullets does he have left? One? Is he afraid he won't be able to kill me in one shot? Is that why he won't pull the trigger?'
Although Old Ghost had his doubts, he didn't dare to gamble. Li Yu might still have one shot left, and Old Ghost didn't even have the luxury of testing that theory.
"Fine, it's yours!" The words seemed to be forcefully squeezed through the tight gaps of his throat.
Li Yu didn't bother with modesty. He put away the Silver Holy Spear and safely pocketed the Purple Thunder Rat Gene Chain.
Boom!
A deafening explosion ripped through the area right at that moment. The agonized wails of a subordinate echoed from the stairwell. Both Li Yu and Old Ghost's expressions shifted drastically as dense purple smoke surged upward.
"Nerve Gas!" Old Ghost cried out in shock. Which group of bastards was this? Their tactical mindset was exactly the same!
He quickly pulled out a Gas Mask and strapped it on. Li Yu, glaring murderously, was already closing in on him.
Old Ghost cursed under his breath. He grabbed Evie, yanked a Gas Mask out from the subordinate's coat, and tossed it to Li Yu.
"Boss!" Evie's face contorted in horror. The purple smoke had already enveloped them. A choked gargle rattled from his throat as purple veins began bulging hideously across his face.
The remaining subordinates collapsed one after another, and Board Member Charlie thrashed violently before finally dying.
Li Yu equipped his mask and ducked into a corner. His built-in Infrared Scan allowed him to peer through the dense smoke and spot blurred silhouettes.
Purple Sniper leaped onto the ceiling. The gun barrel rapidly reassembled and transformed, locking onto the stairwell entrance.
Clunk! Clunk! Clunk!
Over a dozen grenades rolled in from the stairwell. Each one was the size of a fist, rapidly blinking with an ominous Crimson Glow.
Making up for a lack of quality with sheer quantity...
"Fuck!" Old Ghost's pupils shrank to pinpricks. Crimson wings unfurled from his back and wrapped tightly around his front to shield him from the impending terrifying impact.
Dense brown Scale Armor materialized all over Li Yu's body as he curled up into the tightest ball possible. The Purple Sniper on the ceiling began shifting forms and dropping down, but it required a crucial moment of time.
Beep—BOOM!
Scorching flames mixed with lethal shrapnel blasted outward, accompanied by violent arcs of electricity crackling through the air. These were absolutely not standard grenades.
Purple Sniper landed directly in front of him, transforming into a sturdy purple shield that blocked the brunt of the frontal shockwave.
But the explosive force was omnidirectional. An endless barrage of fire and electricity continued surging in from the sides. Suddenly, a layer of purple light shimmered over his skin.
This was the generous gift from Third Fatty's brother—a D-rank Protective Light Shield. With the most devastating impact absorbed by Purple Sniper, the lateral force was completely repelled by the light barrier.
Li Yu narrowed his eyes as the lingering shockwaves slowly dissipated. The blinding scarlet hue flooding his thermal vision faded, revealing the charred corpses strewn across the ground, emitting the sickly sweet scent of cooked meat.
Old Ghost was half-kneeling a short distance away, gasping for air. His eyes were completely bloodshot. The bat wings shielding his body were utterly shredded, leaving only a skeletal frame tangled with raw, pulsating flesh. A similar purple light shield flickered erratically around him.
