Chapter 132: One Must Not Lack a Guarded Heart
Hearing the beeping from his phone, Jiang Cheng was startled.
"What's wrong?"
Hong Cha's voice sounded beside his ear.
At this moment the two had entered the city, even the residential complex, and arrived at the foot of Bai Wei's house.
As for Ye Ying, after entering the city she got off the vehicle and left, showing no interest in what followed.
"It's nothing," Jiang Cheng said, looking at the concerned Hong Cha, scratching his head, "the call was suddenly hung up; I didn't expect that."
"That's normal."
Hong Cha laughed, "Your senior sister Bai is warm‑hearted, but her master is not. I've dealt with him a few times; it's hard to label him simply as good or bad—anyway, he's very hostile toward people like us."
"I see."
Jiang Cheng nodded.
Recalling Bai Wei's words before she hung up, Dawn Society might not be as good as it appears; she probably learned that from her master.
Whether it's true or false is hard to judge.
As the saying goes, one must not have a harmful heart, and a guarded heart must not be lacking; keeping an extra eye on everything is never wrong.
"Alright, it's getting late; we should go up and fetch them. If we move slowly, we might run into trouble," Hong Cha reminded.
"Mm."
Jiang Cheng hurried upstairs, reached the door of Bai Wei's house, and knocked.
"Dong— dong—"
The dull knocking shattered the hallway's silence.
Someone upstairs heard the noise, glanced down the stairs out of curiosity.
While Jiang Cheng knocked, he felt both anticipation and unease.
He worried that something might have happened to his family, who were not inside.
Fortunately the worry was unnecessary; three seconds later a wary woman's voice called from inside, "Who is it? Who's knocking?"
"Chen Sao, it's me, Xiao Cheng."
Hearing the familiar voice, Jiang Cheng quickly replied.
"Xiao Cheng!"
A startled voice shouted from inside, "Xiao Cheng? Is that really you? Xiao Cheng?"
"It's me, Chen Sao."
Soon footsteps sounded inside, approaching the doorway, but the occupants didn't open immediately; they peered through the peephole, and upon confirming the person at the door was indeed Jiang Cheng, they hurriedly opened it.
"Grandma."
Jiang Cheng instantly embraced the Old Man.
"Xiao Cheng, you finally came; Grandma was so worried she could die."
The Old Man's eyes welled with excited tears.
Chen Sao also dabbed her tears beside him.
These days, aside from going out to buy groceries and take out trash, they hardly left the house; with a TV they weren't bored, and when tired they could bathe—life was countless times better than in the Poor District.
Precisely because of this, they worried even more about Jiang Cheng's safety.
During that time they even spent a few coins at a roadside phone booth to call Bai Wei.
One to express thanks, the other to ask about Jiang Cheng's condition.
Bai Wei told the three that Jiang Cheng was fine; he had visited the Martial Arts Hall yesterday, telling them to stay put until things stabilized, then they'd take them back.
Naturally the three felt some relief, but not seeing Jiang Cheng for a day kept their hearts uneasy.
Yet now Jiang Cheng suddenly appeared before them.
"Brother Jiang Cheng," Lin Yue glanced at Hong Cha behind her and asked, "Sister Bai didn't come with us?"
With that remark, the Old Man and Chen Sao also realized.
"Indeed."
"Why is the one who came with Jiang Cheng a man?" "Sister Bai has other matters and can't come for now, and we can't keep bothering her. Pack your luggage; we'll leave shortly."
The three heard this and were not surprised by the outcome.
After all, this place isn't where they can stay long; the Poor District is their true home.
Even though they felt deep reluctance.
In a few minutes the three had packed their luggage.
There wasn't much to pack; they had brought few items, and since their stay was short they were already prepared to leave at any time. Every room had been cleaned tidy.
"Xiao Cheng, what about the keys?"
"Just leave them inside the house."
Jiang Cheng remembered Bai Wei still had a spare key.
"Alright."
After placing the keys, the three checked again, confirmed nothing was missing, and closed the main door.
Having stowed the luggage, Jiang Cheng opened the car door and let the three sit in the back seat; everything looked as it had before, except the driver seat now had a different person.
"Hong Cha, big brother, thank you," Jiang Cheng said.
"Why say all that? Buckle up, let's go."
Hong Cha smiled and drove the car away slowly.
In the back seat, Lin Yue silently withdrew her gaze from the residential building, her expression dim.
The few days living here were the best memory of her life; if she could stay in such a place forever, how wonderful that would be.
"Xiao Cheng."
Chen Sao's voice sounded, "What's the situation in the Poor District now? Have all the Wild Wolf Gang members left? Have the Iron Fist Gang members arrived?"
"Yes."
Jiang Cheng gathered his thoughts.
He, of course, could not tell the truth.
"The Wild Wolf Gang members all left a couple of days ago, and then the Iron Fist Gang members came over, going house to house to collect management fees."
"How much per month?"
Chen Sao clutched her clothing.
"1500."
"1500?"
"That's so high!"
The three of them all jumped in surprise.
"Yes, but Grandma, Chen Sao, you don't need to worry; from now on we won't have to pay this," Jiang Cheng said with a smile.
"We don't have to pay it anymore?"
"Why, Jiang Cheng?" Lin Yue opened her eyes wide in curiosity.
"Because we don't have to go back."
As the words fell, the car fell silent, and the three in the back seat stared at each other.
"We don't have to go back? If we don't go back, where will they live?"
"Grandma, Chen Sao, let me keep you in suspense for now; when we get there, you'll find out."
Jiang Cheng gave a mysterious smile.
Lin Yue felt a heat rise in her chest.
Jiang Cheng's meaning—could it be that he'll let us stay in the Outer City District? Because if it's elsewhere in the Poor District, we would still have to pay management fees.
"No way, right? Could such a wonderful thing fall on us?"
"But if that's the case..."
Lin Yue's mood was extremely conflicted.
Chen Sao also vaguely guessed Jiang Cheng's meaning.
However, no one knows Jiang Cheng's circumstances better than she does; a house in the Outer City District costs at least three to four hundred thousand, so how could Jiang Cheng possibly produce that much money at once?
As for the Old Man, he was even more bewildered.
The car drove along the road, passing one block after another.
Chen Sao and the others' moods rose and fell along with it.
Finally, after passing an intersection, the car turned, and not far after exiting, it entered a residential complex.
This complex looked no more different from the one where Bai Wei's house is.
Lin Yue's eyes brightened, but her heart rose to her throat, fearing it might be empty joy.
Finally, the car stopped in front of a five‑story building.
As Jiang Cheng unbuckled his seatbelt, he smiled, turned his head to the three, and said, "Grandma, Chen Sao, Xiao Yue, we've arrived. Get out; I'll show you our new home."
