Chapter 488: Not a Small Background
An hour later, several people stood at the entrance, gazing down at Hope City, watching the crowds come and go on the streets, each feeling a joy of having survived a disaster.
"We came back alive." Xie Jianfeng murmured.
"This time, we owe it to Jiang Cheng; if it weren't for him, we few wouldn't have had such good luck to return here." Yu Yang said emotionally.
"Yeah, Jiang Cheng, we don't even know how to thank you." Di Yun nodded repeatedly.
"Jiang Cheng, do you have time later? It's almost noon; how about we have a meal together?" The only female in the team, Jiang Ping, extended the invitation.
"Yeah, let's have a meal together, Chief Jiang." Xie Jianfeng also echoed.
Seeing how enthusiastic the few were, Jiang Cheng felt a mix of laughter and tears.
The reason for such a big change in their attitude goes without saying.
However, he wasn't angry; instead of saying things like "you used to look down on me, now you want to curry favor," he politely declined: "Next time; today something like this happened, I want to be alone for a while."
Upon hearing that, the three exchanged glances, each feeling somewhat unwilling.
"It's fine, just a meal; it won't take much time. Besides, we've been wondering how to repay your lifesaving kindness." Di Yun advised.
"Yeah, Chief Jiang, let us treat you to a meal as a token of our gratitude; we hope you won't find it lacking." Jiang Ping said softly.
"Chief Jiang..." Xie Jianfeng still wanted to say something.
"Alright."
Yu Yang stepped forward and, on Jiang Cheng's behalf, politely refused the three: "Little Brother Jiang has only been with us a few days; on his second mission, he just encountered this sudden situation. Wanting to be alone for a bit to adjust his mood is normal, so you guys, stop bothering him."
Hearing that, the three of Di Yun finally quieted down, their eyes full of regret.
"Little Brother Jiang, when you go back, rest well; if anything comes up, you can call me anytime. Also, if there's any progress from headquarters regarding today's incident, I'll let you know right away. In short, don't put pressure on yourself—situations like today are rare to encounter."
He said this earnestly.
Before, he had hoped Jiang Cheng would quit soon, go honestly practice alchemy, or join another team.
Now, he fears Jiang Cheng might develop thoughts of quitting because of today's incident.
Otherwise, if we encounter a similar situation again, the outcome would be hard to predict.
"Alright, then I'll trouble the team captain."
Jiang Cheng smiled, waved at the other three, and headed toward Qin Lao's home.
On one hand, he needed to return the borrowed Thunder Dragon Talisman.
On the other hand, although the matter is over, his heart remains unsettled; he always feels it's not that simple, so it's necessary to consult Qin Lao.
After watching Jiang Cheng's figure disappear from sight, Yu Yang and the others immediately lowered their voices and began to whisper among themselves.
"Team Captain, what on earth is Jiang Cheng's background?" Di Yun widened his eyes, "He's only a first-level Grandmaster, yet he could pull out five- or six-grade treasures all at once, and not just one!"
"Yeah, when that person used the Flame Explosion Talisman earlier, I thought I was done for, but nothing happened to me. If I could have a treasure like that, how great would that be?" Jiang Ping exclaimed enviously.
"His background is definitely not simple." Xie Jianfeng said, then suddenly slapped his thigh and declared, "I've figured it out!"
"You figured it out?"
"You know his background?"
Di Yun and Jiang Ping immediately asked.
Yu Yang also pricked up his ears; when Di Yun and the others asked him about Jiang Cheng's background, he didn't know either.
However, Xie Jianfeng is different; back then, we learned some things from him.
"No."
Xie Jianfeng shook his head with a wry smile.
"Then why were you just so worked up?" Jiang Ping was speechless.
"No, I mean I figured out why Jiang Cheng dared to turn against Principal Sun at the school leadership meeting back then." Xie Jianfeng exclaimed excitedly: "Back then we all thought he was mentally off, but now it's clear he has a background—so much so that even Principal Sun wouldn't need to take him seriously."
"Hiss..."
As the words fell, Yu Yang and the three others simultaneously drew a deep breath.
"Seems, that's the reasoning, huh?"
"Wrong." Di Yun furrowed his brow.
"What's wrong?" Xie Jianfeng looked at him, his face showing a puzzled expression.
He felt that was indeed the case, and furthermore, afterward Principal Sun didn't give Jiang Cheng petty trouble, which also proves the latter's background is not ordinary.
He just thought back then that Principal Sun was broad-minded, capable of tolerating much—like a prime minister's belly able to hold a boat.
"You've said all that, but you still haven't told us his background." Di Yun spread his hands, looking helpless.
"I don't know about that; how should I put it?" Xie Jianfeng laughed and cried at once, "We can't just make up a background."
"Alright, not knowing is fine; knowing too much isn't necessarily a good thing." Yu Yang said: "What we need to do next is build a good relationship with Little Brother Jiang; although he possesses powerful treasures, his strength is ultimately only level one,"
"If nothing unexpected happens, he should be with us for a long time ahead; building a good rapport with him will benefit not just our whole team but each of us immensely."
"Exactly, exactly."
The three all deeply agreed.
As for that, they wished Jiang Cheng's background were as grand as possible.
Not long after, Jiang Cheng arrived at Qin Lao's doorstep; Qin Yu seemed not to be home, so Jiang Cheng shouted loudly, but no one answered.
He shouted a couple more times, but still got no response.
"Not home?"
Jiang Cheng frowned slightly, thinking to use his spiritual power to take a look, but felt it would be impolite, after all, that's a private space.
After thinking it over, he decided to just make a phone call.
After dialing, however, no one answered.
"Could it be that they're doing virtual combat training at the base?" Jiang Cheng thought to himself, the more he considered it, the more likely it seemed.
Fortunately, just then the phone rang; Qin Lao called back.
"Hey, Qin Lao? Where are you?" Jiang Cheng asked.
"Base? Just finished the battle, you kid called, what a coincidence—how come, did you finish the mission and come back? This time you're actually this early?" Qin Lao's voice sounded, a bit surprised, after all last time, Jiang Cheng only found him in the afternoon around five or six.
"Yeah, but the mission was only carried out a small half." Jiang Cheng let out a light sigh.
"Something went wrong?" Qin Lao immediately sensed something was off, his tone becoming urgent, "You kid, aren't hurt, are you? Did you use the Thunder Dragon Talisman I lent you? If you used it, it should be able to resolve quite a bit of trouble, right?" (End of chapter)
