Chapter 330: Overturned

~6 min read 1,097 words

At the street corner, a man with a cloth covering half his face splashed half a bucket of oil onto the seized ox, first lighting its tail, then swiftly and fiercely stabbing it in the buttocks!

The ox, startled and in great pain, red-eyed, went berserk and fled, charging toward the street ahead.

The oxen weren't enough, so they dragged a few horses over as well.

Sea Tranquil Street is Dragon Head Old Street; the remote northern county's streets aren't wide to begin with. Now both sides of the street are filled with scattered stalls, the road packed with villagers from nearby towns coming to the market, the frantic charging oxen causing massive casualties, leaving nowhere to escape.

Being knocked down and stepped on even once means a life lost!

Dawang isn't the least bit afraid of kidnapping or assassination; he fears implicating so many pitiful civilians.

Seeing the oxen charge into the bustling street, the pain drove them mad, and they began indiscriminately attacking the civilians on the road.

Dawang's face hardened: "Save them! That's an order!"

The personal guard then sprang into action, drawing their sidearms and charging forward.

This time he went out with eight personal guards, each wearing different clothes, surrounding Dawang; plus Lingyin and Weishen, making ten in total, which is quite a number.

Seeing the ox about to knock over a child on the street, Lingyin rushed forward, Weishen cursed, yet still refused to leave Dawang's side. Everyone else had gone, leaving Dawang alone—what could be done?

"You didn't bring a weapon out, did you? Where's your dagger?"

Dawang had no choice but to bend down and pull from his boot the dagger he'd tossed in the warehouse; the Grand Sublime Sword was too flashy—he'd never practiced with it, hadn't had a chance to bring it out and show it off, so for now he could only use this dagger.

Once he straightened up, Weishen had already positioned himself in front of him.

Dawang carefully sized up the few assassins who had rushed in amid the chaos; at last they'd deigned to show themselves—if they waited any longer, Lingyin would be back!

"Xiongnu."

He affirmed.

Weishen snorted coldly, "Defeated lackeys! Even the supposedly invincible Xiongnu cavalry wouldn't dare come at us openly; they've resorted to assassination—have they lost their guts?"

The young leader, not even twenty, said nothing and swung his blade viciously: "Kill this kid, Baili Jing wants him alive—hurry!"

Dawang, holding his dagger at his rear, grinned: "I really can't die! Cousin, hear me—I don't bother with niceties; anyone who dares to stir up trouble in the Northern Border must die! Besides, keeping him alive is worthless; of the Xiongnu, I only value Lan He."

At the mention of Lan He, the Xiongnu leader's eyes nearly burst with rage; he broke off his struggle with Weishen and lunged straight at Dawang.

Dawang laughed heartily: "Yo~ guessed right? Avenging Lan He?"

Wielding a dagger far shorter than theirs, he showed no fear; though Dawang is small, he has plenty of strength.

The Xiongnu's incoming sabre he blocked head‑on, numbing his whole hand! At this moment he still had the presence of mind to think; without the lord's resolve, his tiger's mouth would surely split open and blood would pour.

That youngster opposite is extraordinarily skilled, possibly even surpassing Weishen.

Indeed, the Xiongnu gritted his teeth and pressed the attack, his sabre honed to perfection.

"Baili Jing, I don't know what vile means you used to kill my master! Today I'll make you pay with your life!"

"You you you, you said you wanted him alive—how can you go back on your word? People shouldn't do that!" Dawang retorted while parrying, chuckling.

That man wore only a thin layer in the dead of winter; Dawang, being short and low‑sighted, could still see the muscle lines on his forearm.

Formidable foe, formidable foe!

He again lacked equal weapons, having only a dagger, still in close combat—he was indeed at a disadvantage, but his mouth wasn't in the disadvantaged range.

"I've heard Lan He is the Xiongnu's top expert; don't you want to know how I killed him?"

"You must be Lan He's successor, right? Dare to have a proper match with me?"

"Since Lan He lost, you don't dare either?"

He said nothing; the force of his blows against Dawang grew stronger each time.

Dawang could only desperately block; not only his palm but his arm went numb from the shock. He struck while sighing: "This arm is ruined—I won't be able to write for a long time…"

Saying that, the Grand Tutor would surely be moved to tears.

Seeing that three moves hadn't taken down Dawang, he realized Dawang wasn't an ordinary child and was tough to deal with. This man was very pragmatic, fearing reinforcements, he kept pushing forward the rear arrangements without pause.

A sharp whistle blew; of the three men tangled with Weishen, two immediately abandoned him and lunged toward Dawang.

Weishen, seeing that, immediately wanted to follow; the one left desperately blocking to prevent his escape, Weishen, anxious to death, began shouting Lingyin's name loudly.

"Lingyin, come back! Lingyin—!"

Too bad the street was filled with civilians' screams and cries for help, drowning out his shout; the stench of blood and burning protein drifted throughout the road…

Fortunately only one Xiongnu remained; Weishen quickly gained the upper hand, thrusting his straight sword into the opponent's chest in just two exchanges.

At the same moment the whistle stopped—just the time of his two moves—three more Xiongnu poured out of the street alleys, seamlessly taking their places and charging straight at Weishen; evidently the reinforcements assigned to cover him had also arrived.

Weishen cursed; plenty of those northern bearded men had slipped in as well, and he couldn't break free!

Dawang fought three adults up close, at a disadvantage in size and weaponry; a newcomer struck him from behind with a stick, knocking him down—lying on the ground, his whole situation was utterly unbelievable!

His mind filled with one thought, "Done for! Dawang's overturned!"

Then it occurred to him: as long as Secluded Prefecture City is safe, Dawang won't die easily—just a trifle! But… his cousin will!

Dawang had been hauled away, yet he still shouted anxiously, "Weishen, watch out! When Lingyin comes to rescue you, Dawang won't die—don't…… give it your all!"

He didn't get to finish before the Xiongnu leader ripped the cloth from his neck and stuffed it into Dawang's mouth—so noisy!

Weishen panicked at once, his eyes turning red—how could he possibly not fight desperately?
