Chapter 1068: The Barrier Blocking the Road
After enjoying a wonderful time, on the second day, Ning Chen planned to enter City B.
The car slowly drove into City B. Unlike City A, where zombies filled the streets, this place was eerily quiet, with almost no people.
Yet the quieter a place is, the more likely it is to hold danger; everyone knew this well.
Except for Gu Yanqi and Lin Yi, who remained on the sofa watching out the window, Ning Chen, Xiao Han, and Facing Huo Jinglin—the three with abilities—stared unblinkingly ahead, alert to their surroundings.
Although the RV would not be shattered by attacks, they still had to remain vigilant; after all, they had nearly lost someone just encountering low-level zombies before.
The car slowly stopped by the roadside. This was not something Ning Chen wanted to do; no matter how he tried to start the car, it remained unresponsive. This had never happened before.
"What's wrong?" Xiao Han sensed something was off and looked at Ning Chen.
"The car won't start."
Ning Chen checked the car's various systems. All systems were functioning properly, with no damage whatsoever, so it was impossible for the car to be unable to run.
After thinking for a moment, Ning Chen shifted into reverse, attempting to back the car up.
This time, the car started successfully and slowly backed up.
Since the car could back up but not move forward, there was only one possibility: something ahead was blocking the car, preventing it from passing.
Without a word, Ning Chen opened the door and got out. Except for Xiao Han, everyone else was startled.
"Brother Ning, what's wrong?" Lin Yi leaned against the door, asking anxiously.
Ning Chen did not reply; instead, he gazed ahead, using his ability to explore the area in front.
The light-based ability extended forward, reaching the spot where the car had just stopped, then suddenly halted. No matter what, it could not advance even an inch.
Ahead, it seemed as though an invisible barrier existed, making it impossible for them to break through.
"Is there a problem ahead?" Xiao Han got out of the car and, seeing Ning Chen staring gloomily forward, guessed.
"Yes, I'm afraid we cannot easily break through here."
After exploring once more, Ning Chen found that this special shield covered almost the entire City B, and even upward, it could not be breached.
Seeing Ning Chen so serious, Xiao Han extended his hand. Green light crept forward inch by inch, finally stopping ahead, making the current situation clearly visible.
If City B could not be passed, then they could not reach City F.
But what exactly was this mysterious barrier? Was it man-made, or created by zombies?
Now, Ning Chen knew far too little about this place. Without such understanding, too many things fell outside his ability to resolve.
Back in the RV, Ning Chen briefly recounted the situation.
Hearing about the barrier, Facing Huo Jinglin immediately wanted to get out and try to break through.
Just as Facing Huo Jinglin stood up, Lin Yi pulled him back down: "Save your breath. Even Brother Ning and Xiao Han couldn't do it. Do you think your ability is stronger than theirs?"
Regardless, Ning Chen and Xiao Han were undoubtedly the two strongest among the five of them. Since neither of them could solve it, Facing Huo Jinglin's efforts would naturally be futile.
Lin Yi turned his brain to think: "A barrier certainly couldn't appear suddenly. If so, there must be a way to resolve it. How about we list a few possibilities?"
Having a target was better than acting blindly. Ning Chen divided the direction into two main possibilities: one, the barrier was man-made; two, the barrier was created by zombies.
Everyone offered their own possibilities, more or less.
Eventually, several ideas were discussed. One possibility was that the barrier was man-made, intended to prevent zombies from entering.
As for the barrier being created by zombies, that required deeper thought. For instance, it might be to encircle the area, preventing others or ability users from approaching, allowing the zombies to pick them off one by one. Or it might be to surround those inside, trapping them so they could not escape.
After heated discussion, everyone agreed that it was more likely the barrier was created by zombies.
First, the barrier clearly blocked humans, which was highly unreasonable. Moreover, the current survivor base was in City F. Even if a barrier were activated, it should be around City F, not in City B, which was far from City F.
Ning Chen pondered for a long time in his mind. If this was done by zombies, then they were likely in trouble. He suspected there were conscious zombies in City B, probably a high-level zombie.
"So what do we do now? If we can't find a way, won't we be unable to reach City F?" Lin Yi lay on the sofa, utterly listless.
Facing Huo Jinglin patted Lin Yi's shoulder, helping him sit up.
Sitting in the spot Lin Yi had vacated, Facing Huo Jinglin looked at the possibilities written on the table, fell silent for a moment, then spoke.
"I once watched a zombie movie very similar to this situation. In it, there was also a case of being isolated by a transparent barrier, and that isolation was caused by the Zombie King at the time. To break it, one had to kill that entity."
Hearing Facing Huo Jinglin's words, Lin Yi "whooshed" upright. A Zombie King? Could such a thing exist in this world?
Facing Huo Jinglin shook his head: "I'm not sure. But with so many zombies, even divided into levels, and some possessing consciousness, it is highly probable that a Zombie King leads them."
"Jinglin makes sense. From the moment we entered until now, we haven't seen a single zombie, which is clearly unreasonable. Something must have summoned them all away. Moreover, if the barrier here was truly made by zombies, only a conscious zombie could create it."
Ning Chen spoke a whole string of words at once, leaving everyone slightly stunned. Indeed, in times of crisis, Ning Chen would never withhold his words.
