Chapter 1834: Not Your Fault
In the days that followed, Wang Meng felt the relationship between Chen Ping and Du Yueming grow increasingly intimate. Chen Ping began accompanying Du Yueming frequently, even neglecting her to some extent. Wang Meng felt increasingly uneasy, yet knew not what to do.
One evening, Wang Meng, Chen Ping, and Du Yueming went out to eat together. At the dinner table, Wang Meng silently listened to the conversation between Chen Ping and Du Yueming, feeling as though she had become an outsider. She began to suspect whether there was some secret between Chen Ping and Du Yueming that could not be revealed.
After the meal, the three returned home together. Wang Meng's mood grew heavier; she decided to have a proper talk with Chen Ping.
"Are you hiding something from me?" Wang Meng asked directly.
Chen Ping hesitated for a moment, then looked at Wang Meng and said, "I know you have many questions, but there are some things I cannot tell you yet. Both you and Du Yueming are very important people to me; I do not want either of you to get hurt."
Wang Meng felt somewhat uncomfortable in her heart; she felt Chen Ping did not seem to regard her as a true friend. She began to wonder whether she should continue being with Chen Ping.
Just then, Du Yueming suddenly walked in. She looked at Wang Meng and Chen Ping, seeming to understand something.
"Chen Ping, shouldn't you tell Wang Meng the truth?" Du Yueming spoke up.
Wang Meng looked at Du Yueming in surprise, not knowing what she was about to say.
"Wang Meng, actually, Chen Ping and I are biological siblings," Du Yueming said after taking a deep breath. "We grew up together and experienced many things. Although we do not share the same parents, our bond is even closer than that of biological siblings."
Wang Meng froze, staring in shock at Chen Ping and Du Yueming. She never expected that these two people, whom she believed had no blood relation to her, were actually biological siblings.
"Chen Ping-ge and I went missing for ten years; we drifted overseas for a long time," Du Yueming continued. "Later, I returned, but Chen Ping-ge had lost his memory. He forgot many things, and he forgot me."
Listening to Du Yueming's words, Wang Meng could not help but sigh within her heart. She felt moved by the sibling affection between Chen Ping and Du Yueming. In this seemingly cold city, two people with no blood relation could support and care for each other; perhaps this was one of the most sincere emotions in the human world.
"Chen Ping-ge has been taking care of you these past days because he feels some guilt toward you," Du Yueming said with a bitter smile. "He knows you like him very much, but he cannot be with you. Because he cannot betray his own sister."
Wang Meng fell silent for a moment, then looked at Chen Ping and said, "Thank you for your care and concern all this time, but I think I should let go."
Chen Ping looked at Wang Meng without speaking; he understood what Wang Meng meant. Although Wang Meng's appearance had caught him off guard, he knew he could not let Wang Meng continue to misunderstand. He smiled lightly and nodded.
Chen Ping was just about to reach out and pull Wang Meng when he suddenly froze, his face instantly darkening. At that moment, the muzzle of a black gun was pressed against his temple. He slowly turned around, looking behind him.
Standing five or six meters away from Chen Ping was a man dressed in black, wearing dark sunglasses.
That man spoke in a cold, low voice: "Come with me! Don't play tricks! Otherwise, I guarantee you will not walk out of this door today!"
Having finished speaking, the man in black suddenly pulled the trigger. A bullet flew swiftly toward Chen Ping, shattering the glass and punching a hole in the wall.
Seeing the bullet coming, Chen Ping quickly dodged to the side, but the bullet still grazed his arm, leaving a deep, bone-exposing wound on his shoulder. Chen Ping's right arm instantly hung limp, and bright red blood dripped drop by drop down his arm.
"Husband..."
"Chen Ping-ge..."
Wang Meng and Du Yueming cried out almost simultaneously. Wang Meng rushed to Chen Ping's side, nervously checking his injuries. Du Yueming also hurriedly rushed to Chen Ping's other side, helping to treat his wounds.
Chen Ping raised his eyes and stared at the man in black, asking through gritted teeth: "Who exactly are you?"
"Me? You will know who I am very soon!" The man in black's lips curled slightly, revealing a sinister smile. Then he suddenly waved his hand, and several silver needles shot out.
Chen Ping had already been on guard; as soon as the man in black moved, he quickly retreated. But he did not expect the opponent to be so cunning, having smeared anesthetic on the hidden weapons.
The silver needles broke the skin, immediately stinging the nerves, causing his entire right arm to instantly lose sensation, unable to exert even a fraction of strength.
Chen Ping fell to the ground, his gaze死死 fixed on the man in black. He knew he had lost, and lost miserably. He could not figure out why this stranger wanted to capture him.
Seeing this situation, both Wang Meng and Du Yueming panicked. Especially Wang Meng; she rushed to the man in black's front, pleading: "Whatever you want to do, I am willing to give you money. I will give you a lot of money. Please release Chen Ping; I beg you, let him go!"
The man in black said indifferently: "Sorry, I am here to kill you. Either you or Chen Ping must die!"
Wang Meng froze; she never expected that she would be killed.
The man in black approached Chen Ping. He took out a handgun, pointed it at Chen Ping's head, then slowly raised it high, pretending to fire.
Seeing this, Wang Meng immediately threw herself onto Chen Ping. She used her back to block the man in black's attack, tears streaming down as she spoke in a trembling voice: "Don't move anymore! My husband is injured. If you move, I will die with him!"
Seeing Wang Meng like this, Du Yueming also came to help. She knelt before the man in black, crying and saying: "I beg you, let him go! In the future, I will work as an ox or a horse for you! I beg you!"
The man in black frowned slightly. He looked at the two people before him and fell silent for a moment.
"I will give you a chance! You decide for yourself!" After speaking, the man in black raised the gun muzzle and pressed it against his own temple.
Seeing this, both Wang Meng and Du Yueming were stunned.
"Bang!"
A gunshot rang out. A wisp of blood flower erupted from the man in black's temple position. Then his body went limp, and he fell to the ground.
At the very moment the man in black fired, Chen Ping used all his strength to push Wang Meng and Du Yueming away, then threw himself onto the man in black.
"Husband!"
"Chen Ping-ge!"
Seeing this, Wang Meng and Du Yueming both ran over crying. They helped Chen Ping up and nervously checked his injuries.
Although Chen Ping was unharmed, this series of events had exhausted too much of his energy. At this moment, he felt his eyelids exceptionally heavy and fainted into sleep.
Wang Meng held Chen Ping in her arms while crying, then looked at Du Yueming and said: "Yueming, call the police immediately right now! Say that someone here is committing murder with a gun! Hurry!"
After a moment of stunned silence, Du Yueming reacted immediately. She picked up her phone and dialed 110.
A few minutes later, the sound of sirens rang out. Two police cars sped over, and five or six police officers got off the cars. Holding their guns while shouting into the room, they entered the house cautiously.
Seeing the man in black lying on the ground and the three people still shaken, the police immediately recorded the entire series of events.
Although Chen Ping and the others repeatedly emphasized that the man in black had attempted murder with a gun and had already committed suicide out of guilt to end the matter, the police still took them back to the police station to assist with the investigation.
It was not until nine o'clock the next morning that Chen Ping was released from the detention center. Although his wound had been sutured and bandaged by then, it did not prevent his face from being pale and his whole body from feeling weak.
Wang Meng supported Chen Ping as they walked out of the Damenkou of the police station, just as they happened to meet Zhou Li, who was preparing to go to work.
At the moment he saw Zhou Li, Chen Ping immediately recalled last night's events. He immediately spoke up: "Zhou Li, thank you for last night! If you had not appeared in time, I估计 would have been left there!"
"Hmph! You still have the face to say that! What does it mean for a man with a wife to sleep in a girl's room? If she had called the police, you would have had to stay at least two years!" Zhou Li said after snorting.
Chen Ping's face stiffened, then he let out a silent laugh. Although Zhou Li's words were harsh, he had to admit she spoke the truth.
Seeing Chen Ping silenced, Zhou Li stopped scolding him. She glanced at Wang Meng and asked: "Mengmeng, are you okay?"
"I'm fine!" Wang Meng shook her head and said.
"Where are you planning to go now?" Zhou Li asked again.
"We..." Wang Meng was just about to speak when Chen Ping interrupted: "We are preparing to thank you! If you had not helped, we probably could not have gotten out so easily right now!"
"No need for thanks! If you really want to thank me, then get the paperwork done and leave here quickly!" Zhou Li said mercilessly.
Chen Ping paused, instinctively asking, "Why?" Zhou Li rolled her eyes and said impatiently, "Why? Of course to find you jobs! Do you think you'll keep living here forever?"
Chen Ping frowned; he seemed to sense a hint of something unusual in Zhou Li's words, yet he couldn't pinpoint what was wrong. He decided to agree for now, then figure out how to solve the problem later.
"Fine, we'll look for jobs tomorrow. For now, let's go eat something, then head back to rest."
Zhou Li nodded and said no more. She turned and walked ahead to lead the way; the three of them arrived at a nearby fast-food restaurant.
While eating, Chen Ping happened to notice a distinct scar on Zhou Li's arm. Curious, he asked, "Zhou Li, what happened to the scar on your arm?"
