Chapter 1890: Gathering
Three years later, on a certain bridge.
"Children, have you all seen clearly? This bridge is called 'Bridge of Love'; it represents your eternal love. The name of this bridge was given by your father, because it carries his love for your mother." The boss held a loudspeaker, introducing the origin of the "Bridge of Love" to the tourists.
Li Mengqi and her son held hands, standing by the bridge railing and gazing at the city scenery in the distance. The "Bridge of Love" stretched like a rainbow across the sea of clouds.
Li Mengqi looked down at the river beneath her feet; the river water was emerald green and clear, and the surging waves easily lashed the green grass on the bank; the water surface rippled with shimmering light, reflecting the crowds walking on the bridge; the river water below the bridge flowed slowly, and occasionally various fish could be seen playing and swimming at the bottom... Such a peaceful and tranquil scene made her unable to help but smile.
The son looked up at the happy expression overflowing on his mother's face, and he smiled along with her.
A cool night breeze brushed past, messing up the stray hairs at Li Mengqi's temples.
Li Mengqi brushed the messy strands of hair behind her ear, revealing a clean and beautiful profile. At this moment, her smile appeared exceptionally charming.
She suddenly turned her head and waved to the son beside her: "Baby, come quickly."
"Oh, okay." The son cheered and ran to his mother's side. Li Mengqi held his hand, and the two stood side by side looking at the river below the bridge.
This bridge connected several larger cities in the east, thus attracting many travelers coming and going to visit. Li Mengqi led her son walking slowly along the left bank of the bridge, admiring the beautiful river scenery. She suddenly stopped her steps and said to her son: "Baby, Mom will carry you to see the stars."
"Mm." The son obediently lay on Li Mengqi's back, his arms around her neck tightening slightly, burying his head in his mother's neck and rubbing it.
Li Mengqi supported her son's bottom, stabilizing her stance steadily. Then, Li Mengqi took a deep breath of the scent in the air. She looked up at the sky full of stars, a shallow smile on the corner of her mouth, and her mood instantly became much more comfortable.
"Baby, close your eyes and take a nap. Mom will carry you to that mountain over there to see the fireflies, okay?"
"Okay." The son closed his eyes, pressed his face against Li Mengqi's back, and said sweetly: "Mom, this is really comfortable."
"Mm." Li Mengqi responded lightly, continuing to step forward with firm strides, treading past the mottled streetlights and weaving under the Lin Yin trees.
This day, she led her son into a park. Inside the park, many children were jumping rubber bands.
"Baby, wait for Mom; Mom will buy you an ice cream to eat, okay?"
"Okay!"
Li Mengqi bought a fragrant cup of ice cream from the ice cream vendor and handed it to her son.
"Thank you, Mom."
"You're welcome." She looked at her son and said with a grin: "Today let's stroll around a bit more; tomorrow morning Mom will take you to take the car home."
"Mm." The son nodded obediently.
Li Mengqi held her son's hand, strolling along the path inside the park. At this time, the setting sun slanted, shining on the green trees in the park and reflecting brilliant Jin Guang. On such an evening, it seemed as if the whole world was shrouded in golden light, magnificent and beautiful.
"So beautiful." The son stretched out both hands to catch the golden rain falling and fluttering down, murmuring with a sigh.
"Baby, when you grow up later, you must be like your father and become an excellent policeman."
"Mom, I want to be a doctor." The son blinked his eyes, looking at his mother.
Li Mengqi was stunned; she couldn't help but think of her own father. She remembered her father once teaching her that men must stand tall between heaven and earth and be an excellent man. However, her father was just an ordinary police officer in a small police station. Li Mengqi knew that if she wanted to change her father's fate, she would need to rely on her own efforts. So, she said to her son: "If your dream is to become a doctor, then work hard to realize it. As long as you can persist, Mom will always support you."
Time flies, years pass like a shuttle. Li Mengqi's son had grown into an adult; he had fulfilled his wish and become a doctor. And Li Mengqi had finally realized her own dream, becoming an excellent police officer.
One day, while Li Mengqi was handling a case, she suddenly received a phone call. Her father's voice came through the phone, telling her that her mother was critically ill and asking her to hurry home.
Li Mengqi's heart tightened; she knew her mother had gained weight. She quickly finished the work at hand, then drove back home.
After returning home, she saw her father sitting on the sofa silently shedding tears. Li Mengqi's mood became heavy; she walked to her father's side and asked softly: "Dad, what's wrong with Mom?"
Her father choked out: "Your mother has a very serious illness; the doctor said there are only a few days left."
After hearing this sentence, Li Mengqi instantly felt her heart cut like a knife. She knew her mother's body had not been very good for a long time, but she never expected such a result.
She walked to her mother's bedside, seeing her mother's face pale and her body weak. Li Mengqi's tears flowed uncontrollably; she held her mother's hand and said softly: "Mom, you must be strong; we are all by your side."
Her mother opened her eyes slightly, saw her daughter had returned, and a faint smile appeared on her face. She held her daughter's hand and said softly: "Baby, Mom might be leaving; take good care of yourself in the future."
Li Mengqi cried out: "Mom, don't leave me; I can't live without you."
Her mother gently patted the back of her daughter's hand and said: "Silly child, life is like a journey; we will eventually head to the end." Li Mengqi was always by her mother's side; she knew this was the last period of time she would spend with her mother. Her mother was sometimes conscious, sometimes unconscious. Every time she woke up, she would tightly hold Li Mengqi's hand, her eyes filled with reluctance and maternal love.
"Mengqi, the one Mom worries about most is you." Her mother's weak voice made Li Mengqi's face flooded with tears.
"Mom, I will be strong. You have already taught me a lot." Li Mengqi gently held her mother's hand, trying to transmit strength to her.
Her mother smiled, trust and pride flashing in her eyes: "You are Mom's pride; you must always be yourself and pursue your dreams."
"I will, Mom." Li Mengqi leaned her head against her mother's bedside, took a deep breath; she knew this was the last conversation she would have with her mother.
