Chapter 1931: Paying the Price
Wang Zhiwei spoke, then walked out of the wooden house. Li Hao and Yang Ruoyun followed closely behind. They got into the car, and Wang Zhiwei drove it toward the city center.
All the way, Wang Zhiwei remained silent. Yang Ruoyun and Li Hao said nothing either; a heavy atmosphere filled the cabin.
Finally, Wang Zhiwei spoke: "Rest assured, as long as you hand over the evidence, Boss Gu will definitely act against you. I guarantee it."
Yang Ruoyun glanced at Wang Zhiwei: "Why are you helping us so much? Aren't you worried we might run away?"
Wang Zhiwei smiled: "Because I once lost family members too." As he spoke, his eyes grew dim.
Yang Ruoyun and Li Hao exchanged a glance, feeling somewhat moved in their hearts. They never expected that this police captain, whom they had always misunderstood, was also a man with a story.
The car quickly arrived in the city center; Wang Zhiwei brought the two to the police station. He assured them that Gu Zhengming would definitely pay the price he deserved.
Before parting, Wang Zhiwei tightly grasped Yang Ruoyun's hand: "Student Yang, everything will be alright. You must be strong."
Yang Ruoyun looked at Wang Zhiwei, moved, and nodded. She knew this man truly cared for her. In her heart, she silently vowed: No matter what, she must avenge her parents!
Before leaving the police station, Li Hao suddenly remembered something: "Captain Wang, how do you plan to handle that suspect?"
Wang Zhiwei replied: "Rest assured, we will take good care of him. Once Boss Gu is brought to justice, he will be safe."
Li Hao nodded, took Yang Ruoyun's hand, and said: "Let's go." The two walked out of the police station, heading toward the setting sun. They knew that once the evidence was handed over, Gu Zhengming would definitely receive the punishment he deserved, and their lives would begin anew. The two returned home, and as soon as they pushed open the door, they saw a man sitting in the living room. He was very handsome, with distinct facial features and healthy bronze skin. He wore a beige shirt with a red tie around his neck. He looked to be about twenty-four or twenty-five, drinking tea with a leisurely demeanor. When they clearly saw the person inside, both froze.
Li Hao recognized this man; his name was Wang Zhiwei, the deputy captain of the city's criminal investigation team, who had once pursued Yang Ruoyun. But she had rejected him. Who would have thought he would appear here today.
Wang Zhiwei stood up and smiled at Li Hao: "Mr. Li, hello!"
Li Hao said coolly: "May I ask what you want?" He did not welcome this person, so his tone was somewhat cold.
Wang Zhiwei still wore a smile on his face: "Mr. Li, don't misunderstand. I came to find Student Yang about something." Having finished speaking, he looked at Yang Ruoyun.
Yang Ruoyun said somewhat awkwardly: "Captain Wang, what do you need with me?" She had already guessed Wang Zhiwei's purpose.
Wang Zhiwei pointed to the sofa: "Student Yang, please sit; let's chat for a moment."
Yang Ruoyun nodded and sat down beside Li Hao. Li Hao glanced at Wang Zhiwei, a hint of wariness flashing in his eyes.
Wang Zhiwei picked up a bottle of red wine from the table, poured two glasses, handed them to the two, and then slowly said: "Actually, I came today mainly to thank you. Thank you for solving a cold case and helping me capture that important suspect."
Li Hao looked at him, a flash of coldness passing through his eyes: "Captain Wang, your words are too exaggerated. We just happened to encounter it by chance. As for that suspect, it's not certain whether he is the true culprit."
Wang Zhiwei swirled the wine glass, smiling: "I know you suspect me. But where in this world are there so many coincidences? The fact that you could uncover clues so quickly itself indicates the problem."
Hearing this, Yang Ruoyun immediately felt terrified: Since Wang Zhiwei could say such a thing, he must have possessed solid evidence. Thinking this, she grew secretly anxious in her heart: If this were truly the case, then she would have no way to avenge her parents. She looked at Wang Zhiwei: "Captain Wang, are you telling the truth? Do you really have evidence?"
Wang Zhiwei nodded gently: "You should know that our Heilong Gang has immense power in the south; whatever we want to investigate, we can quickly learn the truth. So, rest assured. As long as you hand the evidence over to me, the injustice done to your parents can be cleared."
Upon hearing this, Yang Ruoyun breathed a sigh of relief. As long as she could let her parents rest in peace, whatever she did would be worth it.
Seeing this, Li Hao quickly grabbed Yang Ruoyun's arm and said to Wang Zhiwei: "On what basis do you guarantee that what we hand over is definitely correct? What if you deceive us?"
Wang Zhiwei seemed to have expected Li Hao to refute, and said with a smile: "Mr. Li, you should know the rules of our Heilong Gang, right? Whatever I promise you, I will definitely fulfill. You need not worry about me deceiving you."
"You..." Li Hao glared at Wang Zhiwei, looking furious.
Seeing Li Hao's angry expression, Wang Zhiwei curled his lips into a mocking smile: "I know what you are worried about. It's nothing more than thinking I have some ulterior motive. But that doesn't matter. I am just an ordinary deputy police captain; I have no schemes or ambitions. Everything I do is to pursue justice and truth."
Li Hao sneered: "Pursue justice and truth? I think you just want to shield that bastard Gu Zhengming!"
Wang Zhiwei's face darkened: "What did you say?" A sharp killing intent revealed itself in his eyes. Li Hao knew he had spoken out of turn and quickly explained: "I didn't mean that..."
Wang Zhiwei cut him off: "I know your thoughts. But let me tell you, Gu Zhengming is not someone you can slander at will. He is not a bastard; he is a leader with principles and methods."
Hearing this, Yang Ruoyun immediately became displeased: "Wang Zhiwei, what are you saying? You are actually defending that murderer?"
Wang Zhiwei looked at Yang Ruoyun, took a deep breath: "Student Yang, I know you are very sad about losing your parents. But Gu Zhengming is not the murderer. He is a person with great desire for power and control, but he does not kill easily."
Li Hao asked in confusion: "Then how did Mr. Yang and Mrs. Yang die?"
Wang Zhiwei replied: "I do not know that. I am just a deputy police captain; the matters I can access are very limited."
Yang Ruoyun looked at Wang Zhiwei in anger: "Then why did you come today? Isn't it just to trick us into handing over the evidence?"
Wang Zhiwei smiled bitterly: "Student Yang, you misunderstood me. I came to thank you for solving the case. As for the evidence, it is right for you to hand it over. This is to uphold justice and truth."
