Chapter 1940: Settling Down
By now, he had also fulfilled his promise to his parents. He resigned from his job, returned to his hometown, and took a position as workshop director at a factory.
That summer, he brought his wife and child back to their home in the south. His father and mother were moved to tears. Although Zhang Zhiqiang had been married for three years, he had never once returned home, nor had he ever brought his wife and child to visit his parents, which made the elderly couple feel deeply guilty. Now that their son had finally returned, they could not express how overjoyed they were.
As soon as Zhang Zhiqiang arrived home, his mother called him into the room. She held her son's hand, constantly asking if he was warm or cold, and never stopped nagging. She asked about everything and nothing, inquiring whether he was living well, whether his wife was beautiful, whether her personality was gentle, and so on. Zhang Zhiqiang patiently answered each question one by one.
Suddenly, his mother asked, "Xiao Qiang, how many days can you stay this time?"
"Mom, is there something else you need?" Zhang Zhiqiang asked, puzzled.
His mother shook her head and lowered her gaze.
Zhang Zhiqiang asked in confusion, "Mom, what's wrong? Is something uncomfortable with your body?"
His mother looked up at Zhang Zhiqiang: "Xiao Qiang, tell me the truth. How is your relationship with your wife?"
Zhang Zhiqiang frowned slightly; he did not like his mother's question, but he answered anyway: "It's quite good."
"Then when do you two plan to get married?"
Zhang Zhiqiang smiled bitterly: "Haven't we discussed this question many times already?"
His mother let out a soft snort and scolded in a bad mood: "You detestable brat! You've only been dating for how long, yet you want to get married? Can't you wait two years? Your father's illness will still need treatment for several years; how can you bear to let us old ones, Bai Fa, send off the young ones?"
"Mom, I already told you, this illness simply cannot be cured," Zhang Zhiqiang argued helplessly.
"Nonsense! If the hospital can't cure it, on what grounds can you cure it?" His mother glared fiercely at Zhang Zhiqiang.
"Mom, I am a divine physician!"
"Stop talking nonsense! I don't care; in any case, I do not agree to your marriage. At least wait until after you and your father have passed away."
