Chapter 17: You… Just Now You Said the Game You Made Is Called What?!
The breakfast options at Xijuxue Academy’s cafeteria were plentiful, and since Qin Xiaoyu had promised to treat Lin Su to breakfast, he certainly didn’t hold back.
He kindly asked about her preferred food types and ordered a meal tailored to her tastes.
Watching Qin Xiaoyu line up for food and Lin Su trailing behind him, he thought this “boss” seemed pretty decent—good-looking, easygoing, and considerate.
“Let’s sit over there and eat.”
After getting his breakfast, Qin Xiaoyu pointed to a window-side table nearby, mostly empty, where they could talk more easily.
Lin Su had no objection to the suggestion.
Although Lin Su was usually carefree, she and Qin Xiaoyu weren’t close yet, so before picking up her chopsticks, she hesitated for a few seconds before asking:
“By the way, you said earlier you needed my help—what is it exactly?”
Actually,
she’d wanted to ask this all along. After all, she was just a first-year student in the voice acting program—she truly couldn’t fathom what kind of help Qin Xiaoyu could possibly need from her.
Originally, Qin Xiaoyu had planned to bring it up after she finished breakfast.
Breakfast wasn’t expensive, but accepting food made it harder to refuse a favor later—he figured she’d be less likely to say no.
But clearly,
this girl, though outwardly carefree, wasn’t the dumb-blonde type—she was the kind who was rough on the outside but sharp inside.
Still,
with no other options, he cut straight to the point:
“Here’s the thing—I need your help to talk to your school’s teachers and borrow your campus recording studio.
Our studio just started and doesn’t have recording equipment yet.”
To most people, Qin Xiaoyu would’ve just made up an excuse, but he still had some principles.
When asking for help, it’s best to be honest.
“You’re… surprisingly straightforward…”
After hearing Qin Xiaoyu’s words, Lin Su’s lips twitched slightly, and she replied with a half-amused, half-exasperated tone.
Honestly,
Lin Su now wondered if she’d been tricked.
Though still a first-year voice actor, she’d spoken with many upperclassmen since enrolling.
She’d heard enough about industry norms.
Usually, game companies or TV production teams hiring voice actors provided recording studios—or at least rented one.
They never just asked to borrow school equipment.
This was the first time she’d ever heard of such a thing.
If not for her decent impression of Qin Xiaoyu and his non-threatening appearance, she would’ve left immediately without a second thought.
“Can you tell me what kind of game you’re making? And how many lines does my character have?”
She quickly scanned Qin Xiaoyu’s face, not refusing outright, but deciding to learn more about the game before making up her mind.
If it was only a few lines—or even ten or so—she didn’t want to waste her time.
“Genshin Impact.”
Qin Xiaoyu didn’t hide it. “After talking with you that day, I thought your voice was perfect for the character of Lady Qin.
So I want to offer you the role. As for lines, there are quite a few.
Let me introduce Lady Qin to you first…”
But as he spoke, Qin Xiaoyu suddenly stopped, frowning at Lin Su’s exaggerated expression. “What’s wrong?”
“You… you just said what?”
Lin Su’s eyes widened, her delicate face filled with disbelief as she stared at Qin Xiaoyu. “T… that little website… the number-one game… you guys made it?”
Excited, her speech became jumbled.
As a future voice actor, Lin Su and her classmates were very familiar with that little website.
She’d followed the game that had swept the site’s trending videos these past two days.
But she never imagined the game she’d be voicing for would be this one.
So,
when Qin Xiaoyu mentioned “Genshin Impact,” she froze—unable to believe her own ears.
“You’ve heard of our game?”
Qin Xiaoyu blinked, then quickly realized—it was better she’d heard of it. It would save him explaining.
“You’re really giving me the voice for Lady Qin, acting head of the Windblume Knights?”
Lin Su blinked twice, nervously watching Qin Xiaoyu.
For voice actors, landing a breakout hit role was the dream of countless people.
Forget everything else—
after that, job offers would flood in, producers lining up to collaborate.
And the pay would be far higher than for voice actors with no notable works.
Take her upperclassmen, for example.
If they graduated without any standout roles, even if they landed a voice job, the pay was low.
Usually, it was just two or three hundred RMB per thousand characters.
Sometimes even less!
But with a standout role, the pay started much higher.
For roles with fewer lines, the base rate was ten thousand RMB.
For roles with many lines, it could reach ten RMB per character—or more.
This wasn’t an exaggeration at all.
Every time she heard an upperclassman landed a good role, she and her friends would stare in envy.
Yet now,
such luck had somehow fallen on her and the other first-years.
If those upperclassmen found out, they’d probably drool with envy.
“Yes, Lady Qin suits you well. But if you don’t like her, I have other roles—you can pick any one as your reward for helping.”
Though Qin Xiaoyu thought Lin Su was perfect for Lady Qin, if she insisted on another character, he didn’t mind.
After all, voice actors were all monsters…
“No, no! Lady Qin is perfect—I love this character! Can we go record right now?”
Lin Su shook her head quickly, as if afraid he’d change his mind.
She’d watched the video by Tonghao’s mom, which featured many scenes and lines of Lady Qin—she already liked the character.
Also,
it seemed like a major role, so the lines wouldn’t be few—no reason to switch.
“Eat your breakfast first!”
Watching Lin Su’s sudden shift in attitude, Qin Xiaoyu couldn’t help smiling. “Recording takes hours—you need energy.”
“Hehe, you’ve got a point. Then I won’t be polite!”
Lin Su grinned broadly, then picked up her tray and began eating in small bites…
