Chapter 235: Jon Snow Battles Rhaegar, Bittersteel Fights Bloodraven
Dragonfire and flames lit up the night sky over Harrenhal, and the Element Power surged; the Wolf King Eddard manipulated the Element Power, the Magic Dragon, the giant eagles, and the griffins to engage the undead, greatly boosting the morale of the Stark Army.
Jon Snow rode on the back of the Magic Dragon Rhaegal, using dragonfire to burn and kill the undead on the ground.
Suddenly, the Death Knight Rhaegar Targaryen charged out from the darkness, riding the frost dragon, the Dragon of Bronze, Vermithor.
The Magic Dragon Rhaegal spewed scorching dragonfire, while the frost dragon Vermithor spewed ice; ice and dragonfire staged a wild dance of Fire and Ice, and Vermithor struck before Rhaegal.
As a Dragonknight, Jon Snow lacked experience in controlling a magic dragon, but fortunately, the magic dragons were all controlled by the will of the Wolf King Eddard, compensating for Jon Snow's lack of experience.
In the air, amidst the ice and fire, Jon Snow saw Rhaegar Targaryen on the back of the frost dragon Vermithor, his heart pounding wildly.
For many years, Jon Snow had been bitterly searching for his mother; he had thought Eddard was his father, yet when the truth of his birth was revealed, Jon Snow learned that the last Prince of Dragonstone, the legendary Rhaegar Targaryen, was his father.
When Jon Snow was born at the Tower of Joy in Dorne, Rhaegar Targaryen had already died at the Trident, falling under the warhammer of his arch-rival Robert Baratheon. The necromancer Ogbeta manipulated evil Dark Magic to resurrect Rhaegar Targaryen, turning him into a Death Knight.
The current Rhaegar Targaryen was fallen into darkness, yet his soul remained Rhaegar's. Facing Rhaegar, who had returned from the dead and been reduced to a Death Knight, how could Jon Snow not be moved?
Jon Snow rode on the magic dragon Rhaegal, named after his father Rhaegar Targaryen, and unable to restrain himself, he spoke: "Father!"
In Rhaegar Targaryen's purple eyes, there was melancholy and sorrow.
"You are Jon Snow, the prince that was promised. Back then, the night I shared a bed with your mother and planted you, a Red Comet streaked across the sky, and Lyanna and I named you Jaehaerys Targaryen."
Jon Snow had not expected Rhaegar Targaryen to speak to him; after all, it was universally acknowledged that Death Knights were all Dark Servants of the Great Other, having lost their self-awareness and become puppets of walking corpses; this conversation far exceeded Jon Snow's expectations.
"Do you still remember what happened back then?"
Rhaegar Targaryen nodded.
"Of course, I remember everything from the past. I remember Lyanna's blue winter rose, I remember the False Spring, the Tourney at Harrenhal, and the tears of regret I shed when I abandoned Elia Martell of Dorne and my two children."
"Back then, Lyanna and I named you Jaehaerys because Jaehaerys I Targaryen once brought the kingdom fifty years of prosperity and peace; Jaehaerys II, my grandfather, reigned for only three years, but after the tragedy at Summerhall, he called upon all of Westeros to unite as one, defeated the Ninepenny Kings, and completely severed the Blackfyre bloodline."
"Lyanna and I named you Jaehaerys, hoping you would one day inherit the Iron Throne and bring peace, prosperity, and hope to Westeros."
Subsequently, Rhaegar Targaryen's purple eyes stared at Jon, and Jon felt unsettled.
"You are my son, your magic dragon is named after me, and the frost dragon I ride, the Dragon of Bronze Vermithor, was once the mount of Jaehaerys I Targaryen; all of this indicates that we, father and son, should be reunited here."
"Jon, you have finally grown up; quickly put down your weapon and come to your father's side!"
There was slaughter everywhere on the battlefield; Daenerys rode the magic dragon Drogon, battling the frost dragon Meleys, while the Wolf King Eddard manipulated the Weirwood Forest in the air, emitting thorns to entwine and attack the overwhelming giant bats and undead.
Quaithe, wearing a Red Lacquer Mask, chanted spells, and flames flew from her red cloak, igniting the countless wights climbing the walls of Harrenhal.
Ser Barristan, the Knight of Flowers Loras, The Hound Sandor, Brienne, the Red Priest Thoros of Myr, the Lightning Lord, and others brandished their Burning Swords, fighting the wights in close combat on the walls of Harrenhal.
Rhaegar Targaryen roared at Jon: "Jon, do you intend to oppose your father? A Kinslayer shall be cursed forever."
Under Rhaegar Targaryen's enchantment, it felt as if a dragon war had erupted in Jon Snow's mind.
"That's right, how can a son resist his father?"
Rhaegar Targaryen revealed a charming smile, "Are you willing to surrender?"
At this moment, the voice of the True Dragon Queen Daenerys reached Jon's ears.
"Rhaegar Targaryen is controlled by the Great Other; do not be deceived by his sweet words."
Jon Snow finally came to his senses, and he said sternly: "Father, you have become a puppet controlled by the Great Other; I will not be fooled."
Rhaegar Targaryen was somewhat displeased.
"Jon, not only do I remember the past, but I can also see the present and the future. The Great Other will rule everything; as long as you surrender obediently, I guarantee you wealth and honor for a lifetime, and the Great Other will even resurrect your mother Lyanna. The three of us, our family, will be happily reunited forever in the land of eternal life; wouldn't that be perfect?"
Jon stroked the magic dragon Rhaegal, "I will defeat the undead and break the curse upon you."
Rhaegar Targaryen was furious, "Since that is the case, I have no choice but to kill you to please the Great Other."
Subsequently, Rhaegar Targaryen drove the frost dragon Vermithor beneath him to charge toward Jon Snow and the magic dragon Rhaegal; in the dark night sky, the frost dragon Vermithor was like a bolt of silver-white lightning, striking with an overwhelming force.
The frost dragon Vermithor was much larger than the magic dragon Rhaegal; the frost dragon bit Rhaegal's neck, and the magic dragon Rhaegal and the frost dragon Vermithor plummeted while screaming.
The ground was covered in corpses and ice; the moment the magic dragon crashed, Jon Snow jumped to the ground, and as the frost dragon Vermithor and the magic dragon Rhaegal hit the earth, the ground trembled.
Rhaegar Targaryen leaped high, his Skull Sword tracing a deadly arc as he slashed at Jon; Jon blocked with his longsword, and the sword in his hand instantly froze; a sharp pain shot through Jon's sword hand, and the sword nearly slipped from his grasp; Rhaegar Targaryen kicked Jon in the chest, knocking him to the ground.
"Enjoy death! Jon, let us together become Dark Servants of the Great Other!" The Skull Sword in Rhaegar Targaryen's hand stabbed toward Jon's heart, but it was frozen by ice.
It turned out to be the Wolf King Eddard, who had arrived riding the magic dragon Flying Wolf; the Valyrian Steel Sword Ice in his hand spewed ice, freezing Rhaegar Targaryen's Skull Sword.
"Rhaegar Targaryen, let me end your curse!" The magic dragon Flying Wolf beneath Eddard let out a roar and spewed dragonfire; Rhaegar Targaryen's battle robe caught fire, and the frost dragon Vermithor rushed over, allowing Rhaegar Targaryen to seize the chance to escape.
Eddard drove the Element Power, and the illusion of the Weirwood Forest in the air trembled as the wood element swept in.
This was the power of the Haunted Forest, the Wolfswood, the Vale Forest, the Kingswood of the Stormlands, the Rainwood, and all the flowers, grass, and trees; thorns drilled out from between the ribs and bones of the frost dragon Vermithor, and Vermithor was instantly unable to move, screaming repeatedly.
The magic dragon Flying Wolf, the Koi, and the Eagle Eye seized the opportunity to tear the frost dragon Vermithor to pieces along with the magic dragon Rhaegal.
The Wolf King Eddard attempted to occupy the frost dragon, controlling it just as he controlled the magic dragons; however, every time he tried to merge with the frost dragon, Eddard felt a pain in his temples and eyeballs as if they were about to be frozen and cracked by ice; it was clear that the frost dragon was a terrifying creature created by the Great Other using Dragon Souls and dragon remains, and wanting to occupy such a powerful creature was by no means an easy task.
After killing the frost dragon, the Dragon Soul still existed; given time, once the Wolf King Eddard mastered the magic of the undead, he could resurrect the frost dragon himself.
The Wolf King Eddard drove the wood element power, trapping the frost dragon Sunfyre with thorns, and the cannons of Harrenhal let out angry roars as cannonballs shattered the frost dragon.
The frost dragon Dragon Dream Fire was besieged by a group of giant eagles and griffins, and was eventually killed by Daenerys riding the magic dragon Drogon.
"The Bold" Ser Barristan encountered "The Monstrous" Maelys; Maelys was the last of the Blackfyres, he had two heads, and had once launched the rebellion of the "Ninepenny Kings" in the Stepstones; King Jaehaerys II acted quickly back then, mobilizing armies from all over to quell the rebellion in the Stepstones.
Ser Barristan, who had not yet become a member of the Kingsguard at the time, was the Heir to Harvest Hall in the Stormlands; he killed Maelys in a one-on-one duel in the Stepstones, severing the Blackfyre bloodline and laying the foundation for the victory of the War of the Ninepenny Kings. This battle also made Ser Barristan famous.
Now, the high-spirited Barristan of thirty-some years ago already had a head full of silver hair, and the necromancer had resurrected the two-headed monster Maelys; fate had caused Barristan and Maelys to encounter each other once again on the battlefield of Harrenhal.
The longsword in Barristan's hand leaped with flames.
"Maelys, I killed you once back then; today, I have to kill you again."
Maelys let out a mocking laugh, "Barristan, while I was in hell, I often thought about taking revenge on you. You are old and frail, having become Ser Grandfather, but I am a Death Knight resurrected by the Great Other; I am stronger than I was back then, what do you have to challenge me!"
Ser Barristan engaged Maelys, steel sword against skull sword, and the clash of steel echoed across the battlefield.
The Wolf King Eddard drove a spell, and flames leaped onto Maelys's two ugly heads; Ser Barristan seized the chance to cut off Maelys's heads, and he vanished into a wisp of black smoke.
Bittersteel, Aegor Rivers, led a group of brutal undead to slaughter on the battlefield outside Harrenhal; suddenly, crows obscured the night sky and landed on the ground, transforming into Crow Soldiers, each equipped with a Weirwood Bow.
One of the crows had three eyes and blood-red feathers, and as it landed on the ground, it was none other than the Bloodraven, the Three-Eyed Crow, Brynden Rivers.
At this time, Brynden Rivers was old and frail, while Aegor Rivers remained a sturdy man.
Bittersteel Brynden Rivers, seeing his arch-nemesis, said with indignation: "Old thief, I died a lingering death on the other side of the Narrow Sea, while you have lived until now; it is time to end your life."
Bloodraven Brynden Rivers revealed a loving smile.
"Bittersteel, even if you have become a puppet of the Great Other, your heart is still filled with hatred for me. It is a pity, however, that in the war between us, you will still be the loser, just as you were back then."
"Back then you fought for Daemon Blackfyre and his traitorous descendants, while I fought for Targaryen. Today, I fight for the light, yet you fight for the darkness; how could you possibly win?"
Bittersteel, riding on a death steed, said with a stern look: "Enough nonsense! If you have the ability, let's have a one-on-one duel!"
Bittersteel launched a desperate charge toward his arch-nemesis Brynden Rivers; the Green Seer Bloodraven Brynden Rivers transformed into a crow and dodged Bittersteel's attack.
Wolf King Eddard summoned a Weirwood to trap Bittersteel; Bittersteel cursed incessantly, while Daenerys rode the magic dragon Drogon, and together with Rhaegar and Viserion, spewed dragonfire, which melted Bittersteel.
Another Golden Company commander, the Death Knight Myles Toyne, was struck by a cannonball and was immediately torn to pieces by the direwolves Summer, Shaggydog, Grey Wind, Ghost, Nymeria, Summer, Shaggydog, and the forest wolves, the black and white bears, all together.
The fierce beasts sucked the bone marrow of the Death Knight, and the Death Knight was thoroughly dead.
Near the Isle of Faces in the Gods Eye, the holy land of the Old Gods, the undead army of the Great Other was ultimately defeated before the human army.
The necromancer Ogbeta, seeing the fallen frost dragons and the increasing number of Death Knights, had no choice but to gather the dragon souls and the souls of the Death Knights, and taking the frost dragons Vhagar, Meraxes, and Balerion the Black Dread, fled for his life, escaping toward King's Landing.
Wolf King Eddard controlled the magic dragons Drogon, Rhaegar, and Viserion, along with the flying wolves, koi, Eagle Eye, as well as giant eagles and griffins, dancing in the air around the illusion of the Weirwood Forest.
On the walls of Harrenhal, soldiers from The Vale, the Westerlands, the North, and the Riverlands, as well as the Brotherhood Without Banners, Unsullied, Dothraki, and wildlings from Beyond the Wall—who had come from all over the world including Ibben, Astapor, Meereen, Yunkai, Naath, the Summer Islands, and Yi Ti—cheered together the names "Father of Life" and "Wolf King Eddard."
Wolf King Eddard landed on the wall, and Daenerys was completely convinced: "Wolf King, you are not a man, you are a god. If it were not for you, countless subjects would have been slaughtered."
"We killed several Death Knights, but fortunately, I did not see the corpses of my brother Rhaegar Targaryen, Viserys, or my husband the Horse Lord Drogo."
Eddard said: "I did not see the corpse of the Sword of the Morning Arthur Dayne either. I am very glad that I do not have to compete in swordsmanship with the Sword of the Morning again; no one can surpass Arthur Dayne. His swordsmanship is sharp and lethal; I experienced the prowess of the Sword of the Morning back at the Tower of Joy."
The Griffin Hand Jon Connington said with sadness: "The Death Knights Bittersteel, Maris, and Myles Toyne, resurrected from the golden skulls of the three former commanders of the Golden Company, have all died in battle. I understand that these men were traitors and losers in Westeros, yet they were all exiles and warriors."
Eddard said: "Even if those Death Knights are dead, the necromancer Ogbeta has the opportunity to resurrect them. After all, necromancers are most skilled at resurrection."
On the walls of Harrenhal, Eddard embraced the Three-Eyed Crow Brynden Rivers.
"Three-Eyed Crow, I was worried about you for a time; I feared the undead would attack your cave Beyond the Wall."
Brynden Rivers said: "The Night King's army is stirring Beyond the Wall, and I could do nothing there besides scouting, so I had to take the Children of the Forest from Beyond the Wall and my crow soldiers, and retreat south of the Wall."
"Now, hundreds of Children of the Forest have moved to the Wall. The Children of the Forest are determined to unite with humanity to fight the undead; the Children of the Forest will help the Winter Wolves and the Night's Watch to guard the Wall."
Eddard held the withered hand of the Three-Eyed Crow.
"Three-Eyed Crow, you are the last Green Seer. The Wood Dancer Shiera Seastar is on the Isle of Faces in the Gods Eye; you can move to the Isle of Faces to live."
"With the help of you and the Wood Dancer, humanity will surely be able to defeat the undead. I will march toward the city of the undead, King's Landing, immediately."
Brynden Rivers said humbly: "Wolf King Eddard, the magical power you have displayed has already far exceeded that of the Wood Dancers and Green Seers of the past; you are the key to defeating the undead. Today's victory is sweet, however, Winter is Coming. The strength of the Night King far exceeds that of the necromancer; the true decisive battle will be fought at the Wall."
"Hurry and march toward King's Landing! Humanity needs a strong emperor, and you are the only candidate. Overthrow the Lannisters in King's Landing, purge the undead south of the Wall, and establish a unified kingdom. Only by uniting all the power of Westeros will we have a chance to defeat the undead."
Eagle King McCain controlled the eagles, falcons, and owls to scout.
"Father of Life, a troop has appeared on the small road southwest of Harrenhal, holding high the banners of peace and the rose banners."
Robb said with concern: "Is it the undead?"
Eddard said: "It is not the undead; it is an envoy sent by House Tyrell of Highgarden."
Outside Harrenhal, the Knight of Flowers Loras personally welcomed Margaery.
The Knight of Flowers Loras said: "Margaery, have you lost your mind? The undead are ravaging the land, and you actually ran here."
Margaery appeared very aggrieved: "Brother, the ironmen are ravaging the Reach. Euron is bringing sea monsters and the Iron Fleet to devastate the Reach. Second brother Garlan is defending against the ironmen at Brightwater Keep, and eldest brother Willas Tyrell is mobilizing troops in the Reach, but the Reach cannot defeat the Iron Fleet."
"I hope every moment that the Knight of Flowers can be at Highgarden to help House Tyrell and the Reach defeat the enemy."
Ser Loras kissed his sister Margaery and comforted her: "Rest assured, Wolf King Eddard is simply like a god; even Euron Greyjoy is no match for Wolf King Eddard. Wolf King Eddard will surely send troops to rescue the Reach."
At Kingspyre Tower, Ser Loras brought Margaery before Wolf King Eddard.
Margaery wore a long blue silk dress; on the exquisite curves of the dress, roses of seven different colors—red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and purple—were carved with gemstones of different colors. Margaery's beauty made the men present feel deeply moved.
Eddard said: "Lady Margaery, the undead are ravaging the Riverlands; you only brought a cavalry escort of one hundred men, which is truly too dangerous."
Margaery was on the verge of tears, her doe-like eyes filled with tears.
"Wolf Prince, Euron Greyjoy has occupied the Shield Islands, Blackcrown, and other places, and has also defeated the Redwyne Fleet of the Arbor and attacked Oldtown."
"Lord Leyton Hightower of Oldtown relied on the Hightower to repel the attack of the Iron Fleet. With the protection of the Hightower, Oldtown is safe for the time being. However, Euron has temporarily adjusted his strategy; the main force of the Iron Fleet has retreated to the Shield Islands and is sailing up the Mander River to attack the territory of Brightwater Keep."
The fat Samwell Tarly leaned over.
"Brightwater Keep is the territory of my grandfather Lord Alester Florent. I heard that my grandfather went to the Stormlands to defect to Stannis, so who is defending Brightwater Keep?"
Margaery said: "Alester Florent is a traitor to the Reach. At the time, he took the Florents and the soldiers of the Reach and defected directly to Stannis. Therefore, my father, Duke Mace, stripped House Florent of their fiefs and appointed my second brother Garlan as the Lord of Brightwater Keep."
"Now, my second brother Garlan is leading the warriors of the Reach, fighting to the death against the ironmen invaders. Even so, Brightwater Keep is still in danger of falling."
"The source of the Honeywine is near Brightwater Keep. Once the ironmen capture Brightwater Keep, they can sail down the Honeywine to plunder Oldtown. On the upper reaches of the Honeywine, Oldtown cannot count on the protection of the Hightower. In this way, the Citadel, the Starry Sept, the High Septon's Church, the Town Hall, and others could still be burned to the ground by the sea monsters."
Eddard placed his hand on Margaery's fragrant shoulder.
"Rest assured, I will order the North Coast Fleet, the Riverlands West Coast Fleet, the Seagard Fleet, the Fair Isle Fleet, and the Blacksmith City Fleet to attack the Iron Islands themselves. In this way, we can contain the ironmen's offensive."
Eddard could only hope that there were no sea monsters in the waters near the Iron Islands; after all, no one knew how many sea monsters Euron had in his hands. If there were sea monsters, no matter how many fleets were sent, it would be a futile sacrifice.
Margaery revealed a smile: "Thank you, Wolf Prince."
Catelyn leaned over and held Margaery's wrist.
"According to our marriage contract with Highgarden, you will be the fiancée of my son Robb. The Tyrells and the Starks are one family; we will certainly not let Euron ravage the Reach."
Margaery looked at Robb and said gently: "Being able to marry Robb is my good fortune."
Robb said solemnly: "My lady, being able to marry you is also my blessing."
Eddard said: "Once I have dealt with the Lannisters in King's Landing and the necromancer, I will be able to free up my hands to wipe out Euron of the Iron Islands. By then, Margaery and Robb can get married."
There is also the marriage of Daenerys and Jon. Although Eddard has not explained the plan to Jon and Daenerys, in these last few days, the relationship between Daenerys and Jon has warmed up rapidly, and the relationship between the Kissed by Fire Ygritte and Daenerys has become even closer.
The Imp Tyrion brought the mercenary Bronn and his squire Podrick and squeezed over.
"Wolf Prince, please march toward King's Landing quickly! The enemy's frost dragons have died in large numbers, but there is no guarantee that this damned necromancer Ogbeta cannot continue to resurrect frost dragons."
"Wolf Prince has displayed magical power almost like a god, and the Three-Eyed Crow has arrived at Harrenhal; the defensive power of Harrenhal has increased dramatically. Now that the undead army has lost so many Death Knights and frost dragons, speed is the essence of war; we should send troops immediately."
"Otherwise, there is a danger that Stannis and the Fire Demon will get there first. Once King's Landing is captured, what will greet Cersei and Tywin will be death and destruction."
Ever since Eddard told Tyrion the truth about Tysha, Tyrion has loathed Jaime and Tywin, and he has always been hated by his sister Cersei.
A Lannister always pays his debts; Tyrion is single-minded, wanting only to take revenge on Tywin and Jaime. However, at the thought that Jaime might die, Tyrion still finds it hard to accept; after all, growing up, Jaime was the only person who cared for and loved him, except for the lie he fabricated that Tysha was a prostitute.
If Stannis captures King's Landing, all the Lannisters in King's Landing must die, because Stannis is a man who does not know how to compromise, cold and ruthless, and he will never spare any Lannister.
Although Jaime has hurt Tyrion, Tyrion still does not want to watch Jaime die, nor Uncle Kevan, or Uncle Gillian who has returned from sea after many years of not seeing him; they have always treated Tyrion well, and Tyrion cannot bear to watch them die.
The Magic Dragons Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal, the flying wolf, the koi, and Eagle Eye let out roars toward the sky.
On the ground, Eddard's Direwolf Nightwalker, Catelyn's Direwolf Sunshine, Benjen's forest wolf, Robb's wolf Grey Wind, Jon's wolf Ghost, Arya's wolf Nymeria, Sansa's wolf Lady, Rickon's wolf Shaggydog, and Bran's wolf Summer joined the roar.
At this moment, the Wolf King Eddard points his sword at King's Landing.
