Chapter 160: The City Lord’s Extravagant Life, Even a Ghoul Supercar?
Ghost Immortal Tower.
It was the largest and most renowned restaurant in the Ghost City.
A constant stream of patrons flowed in and out, all dressed in fine brocades, silks, and jade.
Their every word and gesture exuded an air of graceful nobility.
Even their adornments—be it their clothes, rings, or earrings—were Ghost Artifacts.
Anyone who could afford to dine at a restaurant where a single dish cost thousands of ghost coins was naturally not short on cash. They belonged to the Ghost City’s uppermost social circle and were all quite familiar with one another.
"We’re here, City Lord..."
Si parked a ghost-supercar at the entrance of the restaurant.
She then opened the passenger door, bowing respectfully as she spoke.
This was because Yun Zhenyue had said she didn’t want to be too conspicuous.
Hence, they hadn’t brought the Crimson-robed Guards.
As an Evil Star ghost, Si was confident in her ability to protect Yun Zhenyue.
Yun Zhenyue climbed out of the passenger seat, her face a little pale. Si’s driving had been steady enough, but Yun Zhenyue had always been prone to carsickness. Compounded by the fact that she hadn’t eaten much all day, she was feeling rather dizzy.
Taking a deep breath, Yun Zhenyue looked at the ghost-supercar behind her.
A moment ago, she had been wondering.
’When Si said she was taking me to eat, would we be taking a carriage or something?’
But instead, Si had driven up in a supercar from just outside the City Lord’s manor.
It had completely stunned Yun Zhenyue!
The ghost-supercar resembled a predator lying in wait. Its jet-black body shimmered with an eerie luster. As Yun Zhenyue’s gaze swept over it, strange, vein-like patterns rippled across the paint before instantly vanishing back into the darkness.
"This was the old City Lord’s car. It hasn’t been driven in a long time. Of course, it belongs to you now."
"There are over a hundred other models of ghost-cars in the garage. If you’re interested, I can take you to see them after we eat."
Si explained with a light laugh upon seeing her reaction.
The old City Lord used to enjoy modifying cars in his spare time.
After his modifications, those cars have become top-grade Ghost Artifacts, each possessing unique abilities.
The last City Lord wasn’t particularly interested in them, so the cars were left untouched.
A wealthy ghost from out of town once tried to buy one, but even with an offer of five million ghost coins per car, they were not for sale!
And now, she had just driven the old City Lord’s personal favorite here.
This car is called Night’s End. It has a special tracking ability: once something is illuminated by its headlights, it will appear on the radar no matter where it goes. Not that such a feature is usually necessary.
No one would dare challenge the authority of the City Lord within the Ghost City!
"Let’s not. I haven’t even passed my driver’s test."
Yun Zhenyue shook her head.
The old City Lord’s extravagance was completely blowing her mind.
"Ah... All right, then," Si said, stunned for a moment before her expression turned peculiar.
’It seems the City Lord hasn’t truly grasped how prestigious her position is.’
’Her driver’s test, of all things!’
’She could order a dog to drive, and it would be legal!’
At that moment, outside the entrance of Ghost Immortal Tower, the upper-echelon ghosts were all staring in shock at the supercar.
They lowered their voices, whispering amongst themselves about its owner.
Then they saw Si.
A look of delighted surprise appeared on the faces of the ghosts.
They never expected to see the esteemed Secretary Si Qin at the restaurant!
This legendary secretary, holder of the Silver Fish Talisman, had served two previous City Lords. She was immensely powerful, yet kind and approachable, making her incredibly popular in the Ghost City.
Many younger ghosts collected her posters to hang at home, viewing her as an idol. Some opportunistic merchants had even developed Si Qin-exclusive blind boxes containing limited-edition gold cards, a single one of which could sell for over ten thousand ghost coins!
Getting on her good side would be endlessly beneficial!
But no one dared to rashly approach and disturb Secretary Si Qin at that moment.
For one simple reason: she was clearly attending to a distinguished guest!
Hadn’t everyone seen her open the passenger door?
Considering the recent change in leadership, this person was almost certainly the new City Lord!
They must be a supreme and unparalleled figure, with an extraordinary presence!
But then Yun Zhenyue, legs wobbly from carsickness, was helped into the Ghost Immortal Tower.
Seeing this, the crowd of ghosts retreated to either side.
Their eyes were filled with a blank, slightly incredulous expression.
’This new City Lord... is certainly unique.’
’Could she have just come from a massive battle?’
’That would explain her exhaustion, looking so drained and depleted.’
They couldn’t even sense an aura from her.
She was like an ordinary person.
At this thought, the crowd of ghosts all lowered their heads, not daring to look at her directly. Their attitudes became utterly reverent!
’After all, it couldn’t possibly be carsickness, right?’
...
"Shopkeeper, you still have the old City Lord’s private room, don’t you?"
Yun Zhenyue followed Si into the restaurant.
A ghost waiter spotted them and immediately summoned the Shopkeeper, who hurried over.
Hearing Si’s unhurried question, the ghost Shopkeeper bowed and scraped. "We do, yes! We’ve kept it all this time!"
"I have it dusted every single day. Even after all these years, it’s exactly as it was."
Si nodded in satisfaction, then turned to Yun Zhenyue. "City Lord, please follow me."
"The private room on the third floor is quieter."
"Mm."
Yun Zhenyue nodded lightly.
She took in the main hall: eighteen exquisite, glazed palace lanterns cast a pure white light upon the brocade carpets, making them shimmer as if coated in moonlight. Lifelike chi-dragons coiled around pillars of golden nanmu wood.
Passing through a carved, crimson-lacquered door, they entered a corridor where several blood-stained Suzhou silk screens were hanging.
These decorations all appeared to be Ghost Artifacts, and their cost must have been astronomical.
A single meal here...
...was probably equivalent to several years, or even decades, of an ordinary ghost’s wages!
After Yun Zhenyue took her seat,
she realized that the dining table before her was also a Ghost Artifact.
With a simple tap of one’s chopsticks, plates on the table would automatically slide over.
Less than two minutes had passed
before a parade of exquisite dishes, perfect in color, aroma, and flavor, were brought out by the waiters.
Yun Zhenyue would take a single bite of a dish, only for it to be whisked away, leaving her somewhat bewildered.
Seeing her confusion, Si explained, "City Lord, these are just the preliminary courses. There are a hundred and eight in total. We fear you might get full, so a single taste of each will suffice."
"This—"
Yun Zhenyue’s brow furrowed slightly. ’This is far too wasteful.’
But Si misunderstood, thinking she was dissatisfied. She turned and instructed the ghost Shopkeeper, "Don’t serve any more of these. Bring out your signature dishes."
Hearing this, the ghost Shopkeeper broke out in a sweat and immediately ordered his staff to change the courses.
Just then, Si personally poured a cup of tea for Yun Zhenyue.
A delicate, serene fragrance wafted from the tea, soothing the senses.
It made Yun Zhenyue, who had only eaten a few bites, feel hungry all over again.
"Please try this tea, City Lord. It’s a famous tea from our Ghost City called Blood Magpie Throat. It’s a rare ghost-tea that can only be found by following the guidance of the ghost bird it’s named after. A single pot is worth tens of thousands of ghost coins. It nourishes yin, enriches the blood, and promotes longevity."
’A single pot of tea costs tens of thousands of ghost coins?’
Yun Zhenyue’s scalp tingled with shock.
’This is in a completely different league from the Blood Moon Hotel!’
’All I wanted was to fill my stomach.’
’This imperial feast, this ghost-tea... it’s all too intimidating!’
"You should wipe your mouth before drinking," Si said, noticing Yun Zhenyue’s expression and offering her a handkerchief.
"Mm."
Yun Zhenyue took the handkerchief to wipe her mouth.
But as her lips neared the fabric,
she suddenly felt a cool sensation spread through her mind, as if all her fatigue had been instantly erased.
"Is this handkerchief... also a Ghost Artifact?" Yun Zhenyue’s eyes widened.
"Yes. It was a reward from the old City Lord. Someone once offered a hundred thousand ghost coins for it, but I refused to sell."
Si answered honestly.
"Incredible."
Yun Zhenyue was left utterly speechless.
Her worldview was being shattered again and again.
’Is this the extravagant life of a City Lord?’
’And according to Si, the entire Ghost City belongs to the City Lord!’
’Even if I didn’t pay, the ghost Shopkeeper would have gladly accepted it.’
’If I lived like this for a month, wouldn’t even the most steadfast person be corrupted?’
