Chapter 111: Human-head Seafood

~5 min read 822 words

On the third floor of Shang Cheng, the cold wind was sharp and piercing.

Soybean‑sized raindrops struck the man's face through the broken window.

The man wearing wire‑frame glasses instinctively wiped rain from his face, then steadied the askew lenses.

"Wang Ge! Outside! Outside!"

A flash of lightning blazed and died, illuminating his terrified eyes.

"What's all the noise?!"

Wang Teng impatiently threw down the large pack of biscuits in his hand, rushed a few steps to the broken window, and the dried dark‑red bloodstains on the floor, washed by the rain, turned somewhat vivid.

He followed the glasses‑wearing man, sticking his head out to look in the direction the man pointed.

Upon seeing it clearly, he found it hard to believe.

In the distant ground‑level parking lot, a dense crowd of zombies pressed together, the tireless dead seemingly surrounding something, stacking layer upon layer until they formed a small hill.

The bus where Lin An and the others had been was empty, and the open space before the mall's entrance was overrun with zombies who had broken limbs.

"These zombies..."

"They must have jumped down from here!"

The glasses‑man gestured at the window before him; the mall's large glass curtain wall, installed for looks, had been smashed every few meters, and the shards remaining on the floor showed that this had just occurred.

"Damn him..."

Wang Teng paced back and forth, taking it all in, and looked somewhat shocked at the distant mound of corpses.

"No wonder we haven't run into a single zombie so far."

"Did they all jump down to go eat that bunch of people?"

The mall is huge; he had thought this group of zombies was merely drawn by the noise at the first‑floor entrance, gathering at the spots on each floor nearest the door.

After all, these zombies lack thought; they instinctively seek the nearest path, not knowing how to detour.

"Never mind them—I reckon those people have pretty much finished eating the corpses. Once we're done here, hurry up and bring a few people upstairs!"

Although he didn't know why that group of outsiders attracted the zombies so strongly, he had no intention of looking into it.

Among the outsiders' squad there were obviously Awakened Ones, so it was only natural they possessed some special abilities.

"Wang Ge, are we still supposed to go up?!"

He wiped his eyes, a little panicked, and always felt that the recent rain falling on his skin carried a burning sensation.

The sudden weather, the inexplicably piled‑up corpse mound, and the mall's interior gloom.

Instinctively, he felt a vague unease deep inside.

"Nonsense—do you expect me to keep feeding this bunch of useless trash?!"

"Call those two girls over; we're heading upstairs right now!"

Hearing that, the glasses‑man's eyes flickered with a hint of reluctance, but his compassion was fleeting—he knew Wang Teng's methods.

If he dared even slightly to defy Wang Teng's will, the fate of those two girls would be his own.

"Tut‑tut‑tut"

The sound of leather shoes on the floor was somewhat abrupt.

"Huang Ya! Zhang Shengnan!"

The glasses‑man shouted their names at the top of his lungs, but in the dim mall it was hard to see clearly.

This was once the frozen seafood section; the two girls had been sent here to look for dried seafood.

"Why isn't anyone answering?!"

A flicker of doubt crossed the glasses‑man's mind, and he promptly ran over a few steps.

The dried‑goods area—nothing.

The packaged‑food area—nothing.

After a rough search, he still saw no trace of them.

Occasional bursts of lightning always made his heart jump.

The lingering pity he'd felt for the two girls had been exhausted during the search, and if they really had fled, whoever got taken up to the fourth floor would be him!

Damn it—where on earth did they run off to?

He anxiously looked around, and finally, in a flash of lightning outside the window, he faintly made out the two people crouched in the seafood area.

"You've gone mute, huh?!"

"You don't even know I'm calling you?!"

"Wang Ge told you to get the dried goods—what are you doing down here?!"

After the Apocalypse broke out, the seafood area, now without power, had most of its fish and shrimp dead.

The air throughout the area reeked of a strong, nauseating stench of decay.

Suppressing his urge to vomit, he hurried through the fish tanks.

The two girls sat motionless on the ground, their flowing hair lifted by occasional gusts of wind that blew in.

"Creak‑creak"

The sound of teeth gnawing on bone was drowned out by the howling wind.

"I'm calling you—can you hear me?!"

Full of resentment, he pinched his nose and stormed angrily to the girls' rear, then slammed his right hand hard onto Zhang Shengnan's head.

"Dead girl, hurry up and come with me—Wang Ge's calling you!"

"Plop."

Like slapping a teacup off the table.

Head.

It fell.
