Chapter 1405: Reason?
Like the opening of a new story.
Anna spoke the first line as if sighing, her previously bent body slowly straightening. The shadow cast on the ground also rose with her.
Her chest rose and fell, and her voice sounded.
"After the Perfect One died, we had no other choice..."
"A large number of original human elites died in battle, which for original humans was no different from a heavy blow."
"You should be very clear that persisting this long against two kinds of monsters in this apocalypse is extremely difficult."
"Moreover, the death of the Perfect One was an even more devastating blow to original humans, their spiritual pillar gone. For a time, the last remaining high-ranking also planned to give up resistance, and humanity headed straight into a countdown to extinction."
"There's no way; although the Alien Species also suffered heavy losses, their reproduction and enhancement speeds are far greater than those of original humans."
"In this situation, at the final critical juncture, our Emperor stepped forward."
Her eyes flickered; Anna seemed to let out a somewhat wistful smile, her gaze unconsciously turning toward the distance.
"He was merely a scientist, an ordinary person not even worthy of being called a warrior. Of course, perhaps his mental strength was slightly stronger."
"When the Alien Species tried to completely wipe us out, or capture us to raise as food, it was then that the Emperor first put forward the Aberrant theory."
"He first led the last warriors in carrying out the Snake-Swallowing Plan, spreading a special virus among the Mutants and using large amounts of flesh as bait to 'infect' a large number of Zombies."
"Under this virus, or rather the infection of a rare Meme, some Mutants became Snake-eating Ghosts, hindering the Alien Species' pursuit."
"According to his plan, this is the first step."
"Create every possible opportunity, use every usable force. Zombies and Mutants, as the original monsters, have suffered nearly total losses under the joint strangling of the Alien Species and the Perfect One."
"But as monsters created by the Doomsday System, they are actually not to be underestimated."
"The Alien Species originate from Mutants, so they do not suffer active attacks from Mutants—that is their advantage. Moreover, in the early stage, Alien Species still needed Mutants as a carrier to be born."
"So our Emperor intended to cut off the Alien Species' root and also produce Mutants that would likewise attack the Alien Species."
"The former failed, but the latter succeeded."
Listening silently to Anna's account, Lin An this time did not interrupt with any questions.
"The story is important, helping him understand the origins of the three sides and judge some conjectures."
"He could tell that Anna was actually willing to answer this question."
"It's like if one day human civilization managed to survive and encountered another world's civilization; they would probably likewise proudly tell them about their own civilization's story."
After a brief pause, Anna continued her narration:
"Although the effect did not fully meet expectations, the appearance of the Snake-eating Ghost caused the Alien Species to make a mistaken judgment."
"They regarded this monster, which could threaten the survival of their species, as the greatest danger, and thus considered the Emperor merely a struggling worm, so the Alien Species chose to devote most of their force to eliminating the Snake-eating Ghosts rather than us."
"And precisely because of that, a turning point appeared!"
"We gained precious respite time, but... our strength is still far insufficient, and we still have no hope!"
As she said this, Anna suddenly looked toward Lin An:
"A civilization, a species, can only produce one Perfect One."
"Just like a person at death's door experiencing a final rally, they can only reignite the flame of life once."
Hearing Anna's suddenly meaningful words, Lin An blinked slightly, then nodded.
"Your population at the time was insufficient; you no longer had the strength to give birth to another Perfect One."
"So you cannot pin your hopes on the emergence of a superpowerful individual; you must, in this period, seek another kind of power as quickly as possible."
He asked tentatively.
The next second, Anna nodded, indicating that Lin An was correct:
"Yes."
"At that time we had no time left. So the Emperor could only choose to replicate the Alien Species' path."
"We needed strength, we needed any possible power to survive! For this, the thirteen pioneers became the first batch of test subjects, each possessing extremely strong will, the last humans with unyielding belief."
"We chose to actively transform into Mutants to gain power!"
"Fortunately, we succeeded!"
"Afterwards, just as you saw, under special means we who became Aberrants are far more perfect than the Alien Species!"
"They cannot gain strength by devouring Zombies and Mutants, but we can!"
"Thus, hope has finally arrived...."
"Of course."
Anna's eyes flashed with a hint of unusual emotion:
"Some original humans simply cannot accept our appearance, so we have completely separated."
After hearing the full story and its context, Lin An couldn't help feeling that these few short words contained the weight of a civilization.
But he also knew that Anna had not said many things.
The truth may not be that simple.
Moreover, his most puzzling question remains unanswered.
According to Anna, the corpse of the Perfect One among the original humans was taken by the Alien Species.
So, is it possible that the Alien Species attempted to 'revive' that Perfect One's corpse? Or to decipher their power? Or perhaps they transformed it into a Perfect One among the Alien Species?
Later, due to unknown reasons, it was eventually traded to a special batch of Alien Species and Chu An?
Now, Lin An can only barely judge that he is not a fusion of an aberrant Perfect One, ruling out that possibility.
But if, as he suspects, the original Perfect One's corpse was altered, then what is his fusion?
Suppressing the doubt in his heart, Lin An tried as much as possible to conceal his emotions.
He always felt that Anna seemed to have something special toward him...
As if suddenly thinking of something, Lin An couldn't help but want to ask the final question.
This time, however, he was very cautious.
「Anna.. Miss.. 」
「Actually, there's one point: that is why you guys continue to fight the Alien Species? 」
「Frankly speaking... you are essentially the same, right? 」
The question is rather sharp.
Although Anna had emphasized that mutated humans and Alien Species were different, Lin An noticed a crucial detail.
Anna habitually called him a child, and also referred to those mutated humans as children.
This shows that Anna is an early mutated human; she may still harbor hatred toward the Alien Species.
But can the newly born mutated humans still be considered human? They lack that period's Memory, and essentially they are themselves monsters.
In the face of absolute interests, among monsters, is it truly what the later mutated humans hope to see—continual slaughter?
War always needs a reason.
Lin An did not believe that mutated humans were unaware that the Apocalypse had not yet ended, nor did he believe that the Alien Species lacked a trump card for a desperate counterattack.
When pushed to the brink, the Alien Species could drag them all into destruction together.
However, contrary to Lin An's expectations, Anna seemed to hint to him that both sides were monsters, without any sign of anger.
Instead, she gave him a strange look:
「We need perfect beings. 」
「The Alien Species also need them. 」
「The subsequent Apocalypse needs perfect beings even more. 」
「So, precisely because we are both considered monsters, we can also "convert" their perfect beings over to our side. 」
「So, war is needed. 」
「At least one race must be exterminated. 」
As the words fell, Lin An's heart jolted.
Although Anna's meaning was not clear, he understood the true significance!
Mutated humans and Alien Species are essentially the same new race! Perfect beings can be born between them.
But perfect beings require massive deaths to emerge! Therefore, if the two sides join hands and live in peace, what reason do they have to let their subordinates die?
Without perfect beings, it means being unable to resist the upcoming Apocalypse.
So...
Whether Alien Species or mutated humans, they tacitly chose to throw their own forces into the battlefield, deliberately sacrificing large numbers of their kin!
This may be one of the problems Lin An had previously wondered about.
The reason the Alien Species, despite gradually falling into disadvantage, would rather flee than destroy the world!
Between the Alien Species and the mutated beings, an agreement was reached!
This is not a racial war, but a bloody hatchery.
