Chapter 1901: The Mystery of the Ghost Skull

~7 min read 1,226 words

Lin An's words rang in her mind like a great bell.

Feeling the pile of corpses beneath her feet, she was shocked to discover that some of the corpses retained an aura so powerful it was ten, even a hundred times more terrifying than any War Star Individual she had ever seen.

What kind of corpses are these!?

Star-Destroying level!?

Andre gulped, drawing deep breaths, as if in that moment he instantly realized that Lin An's true strength was far beyond what she now saw.

"These... these are all you killed!?"

"How is this possible, how could this be!? How could you also have entered a Five-Star Mission!? What mission could kill so many War Star Individuals!? What mission could make you kill so many...!?"

He could not accept this shock.

Andre stared fixedly at Lin An, as if trying to find a loophole, unable to believe any of this.

"Star Battlefield."

"Earth triggered the Five-Star Mission long ago; you thought... why would I have disappeared for so long?"

Lin An gave a light chuckle and shook his head slightly.

If it weren't for those Fifth Stage beings he killed, many of the fragments would be worthless. Vast numbers of Fifth Stage died all over the battlefield, leaving him no chance to collect the corpses.

Lin An really wouldn't mind gathering those thousands of Fifth Stage corpses and using them directly as his exhibit.

A throne made of hundreds or thousands of Fifth Stage skeletons would surely be cool...

"So, what did you experience in there?"

"And what else is there in the Ghost Skull?"

After waiting patiently for half a minute, Lin An frowned and asked the dazed Andre, feeling that the old Andre was still better.

Although he could understand how huge the shock was for Andre, it really was a waste of time. The former Andre would have digested all of this in just a few seconds.

"What did you go through..."

"Heh... I don't know..."

As if his last confidence had been shattered, Andre slowly lifted his head, his eyes toward Lin An full of despair, even resigned to death.

She was like a child who had scored 99 and felt proud, when Lin An suddenly pulled out a test paper and casually told her that this exam was on a thousand-point scale, and he, Lin An, had scored 999.

The gap was too great—greater than if Lin An, right before her eyes, had stomped a War Star Individual to death, which would still leave people despairing.

"Do you think I won't kill you?"

The sword tip pointed at Andre's brow; although this body was Fiona's, Andre now counted as half Fiona.

But for Lin An, whether to kill or not was the same.

If it weren't about the Ghost Skull, he wouldn't even bother with idle talk—he would just kill Andre and read his memory.

However, contrary to Lin An's expectations, Andre merely stared silently at the sword tip poised above his brow, and after a long while he spoke with self-mockery:

"I don't doubt you'll kill me, Lin An; I now understand why you have no fear of the Creator."

"Also, your strength is probably already at Star-Destroying level? Unless the Creator civilization really sends out their top experts, a mere squad is nothing for you to worry about."

As he spoke, Andre felt bitter, even somewhat dazed as he raised his hand to grip the sharp blade, letting his palm be cut.

It seemed only this could make him a little clearer.

"I give up; I admit I lost completely."

"I didn't lie to you; I truly don't know what's inside the Ghost Skull."

Blood dripped down, and Andre's eyes gradually cleared, as if he had figured something out, and he looked seriously at Lin An:

"You guessed wrong on one point—I'm not of low value; I have no value at all. Even the Creator doesn't know this."

Without waiting for Lin An's eyes to flash with surprise, Andre simply came clean:

"My memory of the Ghost Skull is entirely left in that scene."

"All I know is that I escaped by dying; the monster in that scene is fundamentally indestructible and unbeatable."

"No one can come out alive; only the dead can!"

Without hiding anything, Andre struggled to recall that painful fragment of memory. It was the sole message he left for himself before death.

"If I know anything, it's probably just this one thing!"

"Once we enter there, we will instantly be targeted by the Ghost Skull! And once targeted, we will soon die! This death is unconscious—even after you die, you won't realize you're dead!"

"I should have... or maybe I realized I was going to die. So I decisively severed my own thoughts and desperately fled that place."

"But obviously, I don't know what thoughts I cut back then, nor what efforts I made. In the end I still died."

"To be honest, since escaping that nightmare scene, I have repeatedly simulated what I encountered back then."

Andre gave a bitter smile and shook his head.

"I don't know; I simply can't imagine it."

"I have no wounds on my body, and in my memory I saw no trace of any monster. Even the information I left for myself contains no clues. It's as if I just died and can only die."

As he spoke, Andre's eyes were filled with incomprehensible dread; even to this day she cannot forget the fear she felt when, after escaping that place, she looked back at that world.

After several minutes, Lin An felt a heavy weight on his heart.

From Andre's mouth, he hardly gained any useful information.

No matter how hard Andre tried to recall, he could only obtain a single hint that might be useful.

Andre survived purely because the point of entry was close to the outside of the scene; upon realizing he was about to die, he immediately chose to flee.

And his means of escape was bizarre to the point of being beyond bizarre.

"Just like a robot, Andre chose to commit suicide immediately! He first abandoned his personality and thoughts, then let instinct control Fiona's body to escape. Only outside the scene did he stitch together his remaining thoughts with Fiona's body, thereby successfully 'coming back to life'."

Such a method could not be copied at all, or rather it does not count as surviving.

Lin An let out a bitter chuckle; he now understood why Andre said he had died. Indeed, Andre had already died there—of course, perhaps it was a fate worse than death.

The current Andre still clings to the last hope, wanting to re-enter the mission to see if he can save himself.

You have finished asking your questions.

So, Lin An, are you planning to kill me? If possible, please leave me a whole corpse. Consider it as leaving it for Fiona.

Calmly face one's own death.

Andre calmly looked at Lin An, knowing that they had completely lost all value and had no trump cards left.

To be honest, she also doesn't know who she is; she is like a patched-together puppet, dazedly trying to find herself, but unable to do so.

I won't kill you for now.

If the Creator contacts you, tell me immediately.

I might soon...

I will also go into that place.
