Chapter 2060: Wizard's Attention
As the words fell, Lin An abruptly lifted his head, his mind swiftly withdrawing from thought.
On the opposite seat, Klein's grave expression was practically overflowing, even the arm resting on the chair trembled slightly.
"You say."
Lin An's mind jolted, he simply sat upright and asked seriously.
He had long noticed Klein's abnormality; if Klein was willing to speak, he was also curious what could cause Klein to act this way.
However, contrary to Lin An's expectations, Klein's expression was conflicted, and he actually began to question him:
"Lin An.."
"Do you have an Overseer behind you? And the kind that cooperates with you!"
"Don't rush to deny me! I'm not like Gao Tian and them, who understand nothing and don't realize how much that being behind you looks after you!"
"If I'm not mistaken, that supreme being not only helped you alter your mission, but also intimidated the other Fifth Stages! Moreover, your rapid progress is inseparable from that being!"
Seeming a question, it was actually utterly certain.
Klein stared fixedly at Lin An, an invisible mental power barrier instantly isolating the two from the outside world.
From the moment he learned that Lin An had an Overseer behind him, he suddenly realized this could very well be him, the lifeline for everyone! Unlike Gao Tian and them, who are clueless and don't understand what an Overseer actually is.
He fully grasped the meaning of an Overseer! It is a transcendent entity representing the system, merely standing there can deter countless civilizations' 'catastrophe'!
"Probably."
"We can't even say how good our relationship is; after all, we and the Overseer are opposed. Between me and that being, it's merely a mutual exchange."
Lin An neither denied nor confirmed.
Out of sensitivity to the Overseer's identity, he deliberately spoke vaguely, only intending to hear what trouble Klein had run into.
It's not exactly a lie that 77 helped him; essentially, they are merely in a transactional relationship.
"No! Lin An!"
"You don't need to be modest!"
"How could an Overseer seek you? Impossible! If I'm not mistaken, your abilities are perfect for becoming the next Overseer! Or perhaps only you are suited for this region!"
"I know the situation of Earth! Is that being unwilling to oversee here? So he plans to hand over this region to you, letting you become the next one!"
As if seeing through Lin An's hidden secret, while speaking, Klein's eyes even showed a hint of bitter envy.
He knew the star region where Earth lies is barren, with many hidden problems.
To an Overseer, this place is like a polluted land—not only failing the system's assessment, but also constantly producing a host of troubles.
However, becoming the Overseer of this place is tantamount to handling a hot potato.
But... that's an Overseer! How many civilizations and super-powerful beings can only bow and flatter before such a transcendent existence? Lin An becoming such a great figure, he feels it's an enormous fortune!
Lin An raised his brow, instantly realizing that Klein's willingness to speak of these matters actually stemmed from valuing the Overseer behind him.
Klein misjudged.
But thinking about it, it's also normal.
Under normal logic, an Overseer would look after 'players', the only possibility being to let them also become Overseers.
An existence like 77, a 'lackey' of the system yet full of intent to betray it, is truly exceptional.
Although a dog is not free and its life and death are not in its own hands, for most survivors who have collapsed into scraping by, being a dog is already their ultimate dream.
(Is my current strength not enough? Seeing Klein's meaning, he thinks only an Overseer can solve the problem?)
Lin An's brow slightly furrowed, without waiting for him to consider explaining these, the next second Klein excitedly grabbed his hand, as if acquiescing, he spoke urgently:
"Lin An! Help me! It's also helping yourself!"
"I won't waste words either! They're coming! The Wizard World has discovered this place! They could descend at any moment!"
"We absolutely cannot let them approach here, absolutely cannot let them discover us! Otherwise, not only will I die, everyone here will die, and even this universe could face unimaginable catastrophe!"
"They are devils! They are demons!"
"Go find the Overseer behind you and have him directly seal this place! I don't know how to do it, but beings of their level might have a way!!"
Emotionally agitated, after speaking Klein gasped heavily; this matter almost drove him mad in his mind! That constant, unknown-when death pressure, worse than death, drove him to despair.
Supporting Klein with one hand, Lin An's expression slightly changed; he never expected Klein's worry to be about the Wizard World.
"Wizard Civilization? What does that mean? How could they discover this place?"
"What are they coming here to do? Didn't you say the Black Tower is just an abandoned research institute?"
Having a rough understanding of the Wizard Civilization, in Lin An's cognition it equals a super-alliance that, in their world, controls dozens of 'mountain range' continents each equivalent to a microcosm.
This is a civilization so powerful it's unimaginable, yet precisely because of that, Lin An feels something is off.
The Black Tower should be unimportant; Klein previously said that research copies like an Amoeba are akin to a small workshop on Earth, in the vast Wizard Civilization system they don't even merit notice.
Lin An doesn't doubt the Wizard Civilization's military strength, but surely they wouldn't dispatch massive forces just for a small workshop, would they?
Like a small shop having an issue, resulting in deploying a hundred-thousand-strong army?
Seeing Lin An's doubt, Klein wore a bitter expression and had to explain:
"The Black Tower being discovered happened recently. Actually, it's not really being discovered; the Wizard Civilization paid no heed to this place, strictly speaking, not even a vassal empire under the civilization has sought us."
"Do you remember, Lin An? Because of that instance of moving the copy, the Black Tower's energy was directly depleted. Afterwards, Chu An also, due to a operational error, directly caused the Black Tower to shut down."
Taking a deep breath, Klein gave a bitter smile:
"The Black Tower closing isn't actually a problem. But I never expected that after closing, the Black Tower proactively sent a message to the Wizard Civilization, the message containing copy records detailing what happened to the Amoeba worm and what the surrounding world was like!"
"This is a self-rescue device! Originally, it was the program whereby each research copy, upon energy depletion, sought aid from the Mother World!"
"Of course, it's not only a rescue program, but also the final contribution that copies like the Black Tower make to the Mother World before disappearing!"
