Chapter 59: Prelude

~6 min read 1,109 words

Bang!

Bang!

The sound of an iron hammer breaking the door echoed in the dark hallway.

In the dim room, Jing Tian stared fixedly at the iron door booming shut, his hands raised holding a crude iron rod as he hid behind the door.

From outside the door came occasional shouts and curses, foreshadowing the ill intent of those approaching.

His whole body was covered in festering skin wrapped in gauze, his breathing heavy like a torn bellows.

The arm gripping the iron rod trembled uncontrollably, but not from fear.

Eight days ago, after Lin An left, he awoke under the effect of the necklace suppressing the zombie virus, though his bodily functions were severely damaged after being infected.

Even slight movement made his corroded bones feel as painful as being cut by a knife.

AnXia hid behind the door of a bedroom piled with food, her expression panicked.

Brother, someone is pounding on the door...

Her lips quivered; she wanted to go with her brother, but Jing Tian's stern gaze stopped her.

Her voice sounded fearful and helpless; these days the girl could hardly sleep at night, always hoping for Lin An's return.

But the one returning now is not Lin An.

A voice came from outside the door.

Boss, this door feels a bit strange. It seems to have been reinforced again with steel bars.

Yellow Hair wielded an iron hammer for breaking doors, and with the others he hammered for half a day but couldn't break open the reinforced anti-theft door.

Useless junk, only he has the strength to fuck women! What good are your dicks!

Get lost!

Huang Gang's face full of impatience, he slapped Huang Mao on the back of the head, then his right hand went straight to the iron door.

Huang Mao gave an embarrassed smile, a hint of wariness flashing in his eyes, then hurriedly followed the others, staring fixedly at his right hand.

The boss was about to use his superpower again.

Zizzle—boom!

Instantly, a purplish-red high-voltage current burst from Huang Gang's palm, melting the iron door's joint into molten iron in just a few seconds.

Bang!

The molten iron from the melted door dripped onto the floor, flames rising.

Jing Tian's pupils contracted sharply; just who were those people outside!?

Damn it! People inside, get out, Laozi!

Huang Gang shouted angrily, stepping into the room amidst the firelight, casually shaking his right hand and then scanning the dim living room.

His expression suddenly brightened; his enhanced vision cleared the various military canned goods piled in the hall.

"Damn, there really is food!"

"Whoosh!"

The iron rod whistled; taking advantage of Huang Gang's focus on the cans, Jing Tian clenched his teeth and swung the rod with all his might.

He heard the voices of those outside; even if they were non-human, he would rather die than let anyone harm AnXia.

Bang

However, the iron rod in his hand was seized by Huang Gang in an instant.

The sound was dull and muffled, as if what gripped the rod was not flesh but a hard stone.

"Fuck, you dare sneak attack me!?"

Huang Gang tilted his head, looking with interest at the bandaged Jing Tian, a hint of contempt flashing in his eyes.

One second later.

"Boom!"

He wore a ferocious grin, slowly retracting his kicked-out right leg.

Under the tremendous force of that kick, Jing Tian's body flew backward, his back smashing through the tables and chairs along the way, dark red blood seeping from his bandages.

"Brother!"

AnXia, hiding behind the door, her eyes red, instinctively cried out in worry.

"Yo, there's still plenty to eat!"

Huang Gang heard someone inside the house, and upon seeing the supplies piled throughout the room, his heart leapt.

Upon seeing it, his face instantly filled with excitement.

"Haha, brothers, we get an extra meal tonight!"

"Catch those two!"

The crowd behind them cheered in agreement, surging forward.

"No..!"

Jing Tian struggled to rise, wanting to pick up the iron rod that had rolled to the side.

His eyes were about to burst.

Before him, AnXia had already been caught by the leper, her hands and feet seized.

Several lackeys who had rushed into the room tore open the food packages and gulped them down.

In his peripheral vision, Huang Gang caught sight of the struggling Jing Tian trying to get up.

"Yo, still dare to move? How so? You useless junk, how do you want to die?"

Huang Gang wore a ferocious grin; his favorite sound was the lovely wail when he broke someone's limbs.

This apocalypse is truly wonderful.

No one can arrest me anymore.

"You still want to pick up a stick?"

He let out a snort, and his right foot suddenly stomped toward An Jing Tian's arm.

"Crack!"

"Ahhh!"

His arm was brutally stepped on and broken.

An Jing Tian's eyes turned red, and he couldn't help letting out a pained cry.

Helplessness and shame.

Why!?

Why do I have no power!?

"Bastard!... I'll kill you!"

He gasped hard, his body straining to struggle and stand up again.

"Kill me?"

Huang Gang stepped on his head with one foot, firmly pressing the struggling Jing Tian, who was trying to rise, under his foot.

"Brothers! Bring that little slut over; Laozi will kill her right in front of him!"

"Boss, don't go; it'd be great if you stayed!"

"Fuck your mother, you aren't trying to save your sister? Come on, get up and kill me!"

"Wuu... don't... hit my brother..."

"Wuu... wuu..."

The girl's sobs were drowned out by laughter.

Everyone burst out laughing.

An Jing Tian, being stepped on, roared while struggling.

His sister was crying, but he could do nothing.

AnXia's hands and feet were held down by everyone; despite her desperate struggle, it was useless.

How could a frail girl stand against a group of burly men?

Huang Gang's face filled with a savage grin, the dagger at his waist slashing across his bloodless face.

Just.

In the instant the blade playfully sliced toward the girl's snow-white neck, it suddenly stopped.

What is this!?

Huang Gang's face filled with shock, incredulously staring at the necklace he had accidentally touched.

Ding, discovered White Equipment: Anti-Toxin Pendant.

Game equipment!?

"Clang!"

The blade fell to the ground, and he, ecstatic, yanked the necklace from AnXia's neck.

But, in his ecstasy, he failed to notice that AnXia, who had been crying and struggling, suddenly stopped resisting, her head drooping strangely.

In the dim living room.

Several lackeys, seeing the boss seemingly discover something extraordinary, hurried over to his side to investigate.

Unnoticed, scarlet rose in the girl's downcast eyes.
