Chapter 562

~7 min read 1,399 words

The emergency room at night is always filled with patients suffering from sudden acute illnesses. At this moment, everyone's spirits instantly perked up when they saw the pregnant woman being wheeled in, and they stretched their necks to look over.

"Oh my, she's hemorrhaging!"

"The sheet is covered in red!"

Shen Jingjing didn't join in the commotion, but having heard what the doctor just shouted, as a woman herself, she couldn't help but feel a pang of anxiety for the other party.

Shen Ci was so feverish that her head felt heavy and she couldn't even lift her eyelids. She leaned against her mother's shoulder like that and fell asleep after a short while.

She slept in a daze for who knows how long, only slowly opening her eyes when her mother's soft call sounded in her ear.

The young nurse beside her had already removed the IV needle. Shen Jingjing touched her daughter's face with eyes full of heartache and said, "We're done, let's go back and rest."

Shen Ci nodded gently, her consciousness becoming slightly clearer, and she had broken out into a heavy sweat.

Letting her mother support her as they walked toward the elevator, Shen Ci glanced at the time; it was already nearly four in the morning.

"I was on an IV drip for over two hours?" Shen Ci asked softly.

"Yes, do you feel a bit better?"

Shen Ci nodded, not wanting to worry her mother: "Much better. I might have been too hard on myself lately."

It was mainly the drinking, perhaps. She suddenly realized that the normal-sized pants she used to wear had become tight.

Shen Jingjing knew her daughter loved beauty and had strict requirements for her own figure, so she didn't blame her too much, only softly urging: "Weight loss should be done in moderation. The doctor said your body was under too much strain because you suddenly cut out carbohydrates, oil, and salt."

Shen Ci nodded obediently. No wonder her energy was usually very good; yesterday at noon, she had just felt depressed and ate a serving of braised pork and a bowl of rice, and by the afternoon, she had felt so faint from the lack of carbs.

And just as the two were waiting for the elevator, outside the resuscitation room at the end of the corridor, a young nurse holding a document was anxiously urging the family members to sign.

"Hurry up and sign! The patient's condition is very grim; she can't wait any longer."

The patient's husband held the pen with trembling hands, but the old man beside him blocked him from signing: "No way! If her uterus is removed, won't she become a hen that can't lay eggs? This child is a girl, too—won't that mean our family line ends here?"

As soon as these words were out, the young nurse couldn't help but show a look of fury: "How can you think like that? The patient is in life-threatening danger and must have her uterus removed. She is lying inside right now waiting for you to sign to save her life!"

The moment the nurse finished speaking, the door to the resuscitation room was suddenly pushed open, and Gao Zhan walked out with a grave expression: "What's going on?"

"Dr. Gao, the family members are refusing to sign because the patient gave birth to a girl; they don't agree to the removal of the patient's uterus!" the young nurse said hurriedly.

Upon hearing this, Gao Zhan shot a sharp, piercing gaze at the patient's husband and scolded in a deep voice: "The patient is hemorrhaging, and the uterus cannot effectively contract to stop the bleeding. Medication, uterine packing, and suturing have all been tried, but there is no effect. Removing the uterus is the only way to save her life. She is about to lose her life, and you are still thinking about having a son? Do you know that your whole family is committing murder?!"

His suppressed anger carried immense pressure, and the last sentence landed in the patient's husband's ears, scaring him into a shudder.

Gao Zhan then said in a serious, commanding tone: "Sign it immediately. Saving her life is the most important thing right now. If your family insists on having a son, then wait for her to survive, get a divorce, and marry someone else. But right now, sign this for me immediately!"

After saying this, Gao Zhan turned and went back into the resuscitation room.

"Dr. Gao!"

Inside the resuscitation room, the others subconsciously exchanged glances when they saw Gao Zhan's furious expression. Dr. Gao was usually calm and restrained; rarely had anyone seen him lose his temper.

Everyone had experience, and they could guess the reason why the signed document hadn't been brought in yet.

Gao Zhan quickly calmed himself down within three seconds: "Move the infant to the observation pod and perform the hysterectomy on the patient immediately."

"Dr. Gao, the family hasn't..." the nurse beside him subconsciously reminded him.

Gao Zhan was already standing by the hospital bed, responding without even lifting his head: "We can't wait. If something goes wrong, I'll take responsibility!"

Shen Ci had seen that scene from afar. It was the first time she had seen such a vivid expression on Dr. Gao's face; his entire aura was unleashed, cold and forceful.

Handsome.

Shen Jingjing sighed with emotion: "For a woman, giving birth is just suffering, and encountering such in-laws makes it even more of a pointless ordeal."

Shen Ci sighed helplessly and walked into the elevator, arm-in-arm with her mother.

Shen Ci slept until one in the afternoon. The cold sweat she had broken out in had soaked the entire bedsheet, but it had also drained away the illness, making her body feel much lighter.

After taking a quick shower and going downstairs, she discovered that Shen Xing was actually at home.

"Eh?" Shen Ci exclaimed in surprise: "Why are you back?"

"Sister, you're awake?" Shen Xing rose from the sofa to greet her: "Mom had something to take care of at the company and was worried about you being home sick alone, so she called me back."

"Are you feeling better?"

Shen Ci nodded: "Much better."

"Then I'll go get you something to eat. Mom specifically made it for you at noon and told you to eat when you got up. She also instructed me to accompany you to the hospital this afternoon for another IV drip to consolidate your recovery."

As Shen Xing spoke, he went into the kitchen and soon came out with a bowl of fish maw and chicken soup: "It smells so good, I'll have a bowl too."

Shen Ci smiled. Having been sick all night, she was indeed hungry, so she opened WeChat to check her messages while drinking.

There were already hundreds of messages in the school team group, and many were directly tagging her.

"Shen Ci, have you seen the messages?"

"Old place at four o'clock this afternoon. Wang Yikun is going to explain those six problems from yesterday and analyze the question types. Don't be late!"

"Why haven't you replied yet?"

"..."

It was mostly Sun Yue who was actively tagging her. Shen Ci took a rough look at the messages inside; there was no particularly important information, mostly just idle chatter.

So she replied lightly: "I just woke up. I had a bit of a fever last night and went to the hospital for an IV drip. I might not be able to make it this afternoon."

Sun Yue was the first to jump out again: "Ah? Are you okay? Is it serious?"

"If you're sick, just get some good rest. I'll take notes and lend them to you later. It's no problem."

There were many more messages afterward, but Shen Ci was too lazy to look or reply, so she just turned off her phone.

"Sister, how are things progressing with Senior Shi Ye?" Shen Xing suddenly looked up at his sister while holding his spoon, his face full of gossip: "Should I tell him you're sick so he can come take care of you?"

"You're certainly considerate of me." Shen Ci chuckled: "But he and I are already over."

"Ah?"

Shen Ci curled her lips into a smile and delivered a final blow: "Just like your first love, it ended without a sound."

Shen Xing: "..."
