Chapter 4: Hello, Interviewer (Part 1)
Standing below the Tengyuan Building, Zhou Xiaoru looked up at the massive office building that towered into the clouds.
Towering into the clouds...
Fine, she admitted that was a bit of an exaggeration, but the building had to have at least twenty-some floors.
Under the shining sun, the glittering backlit glass was almost blinding her dog eyes; after watching for a while, she quickly regained her focus and walked inside.
Although there was still half an hour until the interview, arriving early was better than arriving late. Modern corporate interviews always came up with all sorts of ideas to test job seekers; today, she had to polish her 24k pure gold dog eyes!
After entering the building, she marveled at it, much like Granny Liu entering the Grand View Garden, finding everything novel.
Although she had experience with part-time jobs and working, this was Zhou Xiaoru's first time entering such a large enterprise.
At this moment, the building's reception desk was surrounded by quite a few people, all of whom appeared to be there for interviews.
Walking over with a fidgety gait, she really wanted to kick off these awkward shoes. But in this kind of setting, she couldn't afford to be so reckless.
After handing the resume she brought to the beautiful young lady at the front desk, the lady gave her a temporary work badge; without this badge, they, the interviewees, could not enter the company's interior.
Then, she followed a large crowd to wait for the elevator not far from the front desk.
There were four elevator entrances in total, facing each other front and back.
Everyone was waiting at the north-facing elevator entrance, while conversely, no one was at the south-facing elevator entrance.
Zhou Xiaoru stared at the elevator that was currently stopped on the first floor but had no one taking it, wondering if these people were collectively blind!
Looking at the girl closest to her, she tugged at her, "Beauty, why is no one taking the elevator on this side?"
That girl kindly explained, "Have you not read the Tengyuan Company's employee induction manual?"
She shook her head blankly; she really hadn't read it...
"These two elevators are for the company's senior management; regular staff all use this side."
What? Zhou Xiaoru felt as if she had heard some alien language; did taking an elevator really distinguish between regular staff and senior management?
She immediately felt a bit of disdain in her heart, making it seem just like attending court in ancient times, where officials walked the official path and commoners could only walk the small paths...
Swinging her resume around in frustration, she started chatting with that girl again, "Beauty, what position are you interviewing for?"
Hearing the voice, the girl amiably spread out the resume in her hand for her to see. Upon seeing that the graduation school column on the resume was the same university as hers, Zhou Xiaoru quickly tried to build rapport by also spreading out her own resume for the other person to see.
"So we are from the same school..."
"Yeah."
"I'm from the Management School, which school are you from?"
"I'm from the Computer Science Department."
"Computer Science Department, wow, that's amazing," Zhou Xiaoru exclaimed.
The girl took another look at her resume, and upon seeing the name in the name column, she murmured it aloud.
"Zhou Xiaoru..." Why did this name sound so familiar to her? Before she could think too much, a "ding" sounded, and the elevator door opened.
Instantly, the people inside the elevator poured out, followed immediately by the crowd outside swarming in; in a flash, the elevator was packed full of people again.
Zhou Xiaoru, who had always been agile and capable of squeezing onto buses and navigating bathhouses, was uncharacteristically left behind by the crowd today.
The girl who had just spoken to her was standing at the elevator door, enthusiastically waving at her and shouting, "Hurry and come in, there's still room for one person here."
But after Zhou Xiaoru struggled to shrink her body inside...
"Beep beep beep..." The elevator gave an overload alarm, showing no mercy at all.
Zhou Xiaoru cursed in her heart, damn it! What is the meaning of this! She only weighed about a hundred and twenty jin, even if she was only one meter sixty tall...
Having no choice but to step back out of the elevator, she smiled politely and waved goodbye to the crowd inside, "Hehe, you guys go ahead, I'll wait for the next one."
Although she said that, her eyes were scanning back and forth inside the elevator; there were several young men in there.
She was daydreaming in her head, shouldn't a loud and graceful voice ring out in the elevator at a time like this?
For example, something like, "This young lady, I'll give my spot to you."
But...
She had thought too much; the elevator door closed with a ding in front of her.
The smile she had been maintaining drooped down along with the closing door...
Men these days are really...
Not worth mentioning...
Staring at the numbers jumping up and down on the elevator button, the interview floor was the twelfth floor; today's interview was divided into two parts: a written test and an oral test.
This reminded Zhou Xiaoru of the English oral test before the college entrance exam; she was a little nervous, yet a little expectant...
She glanced at the elevators next to them, all of which were occupied, and then looked unwillingly at the empty elevator behind her...
She wandered slowly over to that elevator entrance, but never had the guts to press that button; today was for an interview, so it was better to be a bit more restrained.
Speaking of which, the elevator for senior management seemed to be brighter than the one for regular staff; could it be gold-plated?
Just as someone was tilting her head to inspect the material of the elevator, a fair and slender finger pressed the elevator button that someone had been wanting to press but didn't dare to...
"Ding," the elevator door opened...
Zhou Xiaoru stared with wide eyes at the man who had already entered the elevator...
Her heart felt as if it had been struck by an arrow!
So handsome!
Sword-like eyebrows and star-like eyes, tall and stylish, a plaid suit outlining a perfect figure.
She had finally seen a handsome man other than Gu Liyan and Zhou Ding.
The person in the elevator looked at the person with a lovestruck expression, a smile on his face, "Are you not coming in?"
The person standing at the door was stunned and pointed at herself, "I... I can take this too?" Wasn't this for senior management? Was this person senior management at Tengyuan Company?
"Of course you can."
Zhou Xiaoru looked around; there was no one else nearby, and with a handsome man extending an invitation, how could there be any reason to refuse?
After entering the elevator, the handsome man asked considerately, "Which floor are you going to?"
She replied shyly and bashfully, "The twelfth floor."
"Are you here for an interview?"
"Mm."
The handsome man paused and then added, "Your outfit is very nice."
The outfit is nice? Was this a roundabout way of complimenting her for looking nice? She replied shyly and modestly, "Thank you..."
Very good, this is exactly the kind of lady she should be to leave a good impression on the handsome man; perhaps they would become colleagues later, and following the development in idol dramas, the two would soon embark on an incredible workplace journey of pursuing love...
Oh ho ho ho, just thinking about it makes her heart surge...
"Ding."
The ripples that had just stirred in Zhou Xiaoru's heart fell back to the beach with the handsome man's words, "Goodbye, I wish you success in your interview," as he had already gotten off the elevator early.
At this moment, the face in the elevator that had just been shy instantly turned ferocious the moment the elevator doors closed.
Sure enough, everything in idol dramas is a lie; love at first sight is all bullshit!
When she arrived at the twelfth floor, about twenty people were standing in the spacious lobby, and there were still a dozen or so minutes left until the interview time.
The girl she had bumped into downstairs was standing in the crowd, waving at Zhou Xiaoru.
The girl hurriedly told her the news she had just learned, "I heard today's oral test is to introduce yourself in English. How is your English?"
Zhou Xiaoru's face turned pale. Introduce herself in English?
It's over. English is her weak point among all her subjects; she had to take the English Level 4 exam twice before passing it. It's over, it's over...
It was too late for a last-minute cram session. At this time, a mature woman with a tall figure, wearing a white-collar uniform, bright red lips, and stepping on high heels, walked over with a folder, preparing to announce the rules for this interview.
"Everyone, please quiet down."
Everyone looked at her thirstily, like people in a desert seeing a water source.
"Hello everyone, I am the Personnel Department assistant, Zhang Yayu. You can call me by my English name, Ada. Today's interview is divided into a written test and an oral test. The average of the two scores will determine whether you can stay in the end. Now, those whose names I call, go to the conference room for the written test first; the rest go to the multimedia office for the oral test..."
Zhou Xiaoru had no confidence left in her heart now, thinking there was no chance; an English oral test, isn't this forcing someone to their death!
But since she was already here, she couldn't just run away from the battle. At this time, that Ada had already called her name, so she might as well go participate in the written test first.
In the bright conference room, a dozen or so people were sitting, each of them writing furiously.
Zhou Xiaoru glanced at the test paper, which was the same as in school; it was full of basic questions related to her major. This didn't stump her, but when she got to the last question, she fell into deep thought...
"Please briefly describe why you chose our company?"
Why choose this company...
Could she write that she was just here to try her luck!
Who doesn't want to get into a big enterprise? Good benefits, good treatment, and high salary!
But she couldn't write what she was thinking on this test paper!
After thinking about it, she followed the approach used for student council applications and lavishly praised Tengyuan Company, hoping that the Supervisors interviewing her would feel her sincere earnestness when they saw it!
After the written test, their group in the conference room waited for the upcoming oral test.
Sitting outside the multimedia office, watching the various kinds of people coming out from inside the office...
Some had heavy expressions, some looked dejected, and some girls even came out crying.
Zhou Xiaoru's face twitched repeatedly; it's just an interview! Why is it made out to be harder than going on a pilgrimage to the West...
Following a voice from inside, "Zhou Xiaoru," her whole body instantly tensed up, and her mood became extremely nervous as well.
After getting up from her seat, the legs supported by her high heels went soft...
Damn it! Can she not be such a coward! Holding onto the wall, she stood steady with difficulty and walked toward that office that seemed like it would "eat people."
After walking in, regardless of anything else, she immediately bowed ninety degrees respectfully, and didn't dare to look at the big shots sitting below at this moment...
After finishing the bow, she walked a few more steps inside...
Just as she raised her head, preparing to use the broken English self-introduction she had temporarily prepared outside, she was shocked by the people sitting opposite her!
There were five people sitting in the first row of seats below, two of whom were looking at her with smiles in their eyes; one was the handsome high-level executive she had met in the elevator earlier, and the other was...
Gu Liyan!
Zhou Xiaoru thought she had seen wrong...
Right, she must have seen wrong; no, no, no, she might still be dreaming and hasn't woken up yet...
At this time, Gu Liyan's pleasant voice sounded, "Please introduce yourself in English."
This sound shattered all of Zhou Xiaoru's fantasies. Could she leave?
