Chapter 122: The Mother-in-Law Brings Her In for a Check-up (Part 1)

~7 min read 1,372 words

Ji Xiang, who had no strength to truss a chicken, did not know what had happened; he was in the System Space learning surgery with the System NPC.

Hybrid Surgery involves multiple disciplines and is far more difficult than single-category surgeries. But Ji Xiang has a resilient temperament; he performed surgery after surgery without feeling bored or tedious.

The night passed without incident.

Early the next morning, after Ji Xiang finished his half-marathon and returned home, he saw the old man cleaning their yard.

The old man's personality was rather solitary; he would rather do things himself than hire anyone.

Ji Xiang was already used to it and did not help; since childhood, Ji Xiang had believed his old man enjoyed it.

"Dad, I'm back."

"Mm." Ji Xiang's father was trimming the lawn, and the scent of grass corpses diffused through the air. "Are there surgeries today?"

"I have surgeries first today, then I'll accompany Liu Zhuren to the Outpatient Department," Ji Xiang replied.

"Let's eat." Ji Xiang's father put down the work he was halfway through, turned to wash his hands, changed his clothes, and ate with Ji Xiang.

After eating, Ji Xiang headed straight to the hospital.

Recently, Wu Zong had Laser Lithotripsy surgeries every day, and Ji Xiang had Experience Points coming in; this existence of someone helping him "farm" made Ji Xiang feel very happy.

Getting something for nothing really is human nature, Ji Xiang thought, his mind drifting to Liu Zhuren and Zhao Zhuren.

The Experience Points from those large-scale surgeries must be more than those from Laser Lithotripsy.

However, this matter could not be accomplished overnight. Liu Zhuren said he would discuss it with Zhao Zhuren and prepare to apply for a project fund; although it wasn't much money, they were accustomed to reporting such matters to the hospital.

Ji Xiang was anxious but could do nothing.

Arriving at the hospital, he first made a round to see the Patients, then copied and pasted the medical records before the morning shift handover; Ji Xiang made simple revisions and left the rest to wait until after the Attending Professor's ward rounds.

This was the work a Standardized Training Student should do.

Ward rounds, performing surgeries, writing Medical Records; after a quick lunch at noon, Ji Xiang busied himself finishing all the trivial tasks.

At 1:20 PM, after taking a nap, Liu Zhuren came to find Ji Xiang.

"Doctor Xiao Ji, let's go, come to the Outpatient Department with me."

"Alright," Ji Xiang responded.

Working in the Outpatient Department is also part of Clinical practice; the System NPC had said that a high level of surgical skill does not mean one can handle everything.

This is all Clinical experience, or a part of Clinical experience.

So Ji Xiang did not resist.

"I'm old, my typing is slow," Liu Zhuren chatted with Ji Xiang while walking toward the Outpatient Department. "Plus the hospital's system... damn it!"

"What's wrong, Zhuren?"

"Just got used to one operating system, and they insisted on some 'intelligent' thing, finding that comprador company to do it," Liu Zhuren complained. "What kind of garbage is this? The system they make gets worse every time; crashing and lagging are minor issues, but it makes errors at every turn, and they still have the nerve to call themselves a high-tech company."

Ji Xiang chuckled; since it was called a comprador company, wasn't this all normal?

"They've even made it into elementary school textbooks," Ji Xiang said.

"Let them act up. Do they really think they can establish a legacy and become a sage? The more they act up, the more miserably they'll die," Liu Zhuren said. "I'll leave these words here, Doctor Xiao Ji, you just watch."

"Zhuren, what kind of Patients do we have the most of in the Outpatient Department?" Ji Xiang didn't want to talk more about this; Liu Zhuren venting was enough.

"The most? Prostatic Hyperplasia," Liu Zhuren said with a smile. "You're still young, you can't understand the pain of Prostatic Hyperplasia. Do you know? The prostate is the only organ in the human body that grows continuously."

This description...

An organ that grows continuously.

If Ji Xiang didn't know what Liu Zhuren meant, he would have definitely thought he was making a dirty joke.

However, after getting used to the "speed" of the Urology Department, everything else was stationary; Ji Xiang learned things quickly, it was a smooth process.

"You follow along and watch; although it's boring, it's also Clinical practice. By the way, there are also some functional Patients..."

As he spoke, Liu Zhuren's expression became quite interesting.

"Zhuren, what are you thinking about?" Ji Xiang asked.

"I reckon you'll be able to see it today."

"See what?"

"The Family Member of a Patient."

Liu Zhuren's out-of-the-blue remark left Ji Xiang stunned.

What was there to see about a Family Member?

Arriving at the Outpatient Department, Liu Zhuren let Ji Xiang sit in front of the computer, while he pulled up a chair and sat next to Ji Xiang.

Ji Xiang knew he was just a typist.

"Knock, knock, knock~"

After Liu Zhuren called the number, a knocking sound was heard.

It was a middle-aged woman; she stood at the door, knocking cautiously, looking somewhat restrained.

"Please come in," Liu Zhuren said gently, then lowered his voice. "Doctor Xiao Ji, this is the Family Member I was telling you about."

Ji Xiang's Spirit stirred.

He stared fixedly at the computer screen, using his peripheral vision to size up the Family Member.

It was very strange; generally speaking, the Urology Department is dominated by male Patients, otherwise, why would it have the nickname "the dangling surgery department"?

"Liu Zhuren, right?" The woman walked up to Liu Zhuren, not sitting down, but asking in a low voice.

She had an elegant temperament and dignified manners, completely out of place with the words "Urology Department."

"Yes, what is it?"

"I am the Patient's..."

Ji Xiang pricked up his ears.

"Mother-in-law."

"!!!"

"Oh, where is the Patient?" Liu Zhuren asked calmly, long since accustomed to such things.

"Outside. Let me explain the situation first."

Liu Zhuren made a gesture, signaling for the Family Member to speak first.

"My son-in-law, he... he..."

"Is he unable to perform?" Liu Zhuren asked directly.

"Yes."

"Oh, that's very common, it's nothing to worry about." Liu Zhuren smiled. "I understand. Have the Patient come in."

The woman was stunned; she was somewhat skeptical and looked Liu Zhuren up and down.

"Similar situations are very common, and you did the right thing," Liu Zhuren said indifferently. "Between a husband and wife, if the wife brings him in, the husband will feel his dignity has been challenged, and the relationship won't be able to be maintained in the future."

"But it's perfectly normal for a mother-in-law to bring him in, and it's easier for the Patient to accept. Rest assured, I've seen plenty of this. It's not that he's unable to perform; it's a minor issue, just take some medicine and it will be fine."

Countless thoughts welled up in Ji Xiang's mind.

The Family Member let out a long sigh of relief; not having to explain the awkward problem too much was truly great.

"Have the Patient come in; it's not good for the two of us to talk too much," Liu Zhuren said.

"Yes, yes, yes, thank you for your hard work, Liu Zhuren."

The Family Member bowed politely and then walked out.

Ji Xiang did not speak, only observing quietly.

A dozen seconds later, a man under thirty years old walked in with an expression of embarrassment, difficulty, and conflict on his face.

"Close the door." Liu Zhuren remained gentle, his tone making one feel like they were bathed in a spring breeze.

The man turned and closed the door.

"Sit," Liu Zhuren said. "Tell me, what's going on?"

The man sheepishly didn't know where to start, his head lowered and his face flushed, but the expression on his face was complex to the Extreme Point, beyond words.

"It's very normal, I'm the same," Liu Zhuren laughed.

"Huh?!" The Patient was stunned; he hadn't expected to hear such an opening remark from Liu Zhuren's mouth.
