Chapter 330: Can you still save the Patient if the surgery fails
"Xiao Ji, let's set that aside for now; the times are different, too."
Liu Zhuren did not look at Ji Xiang, but stared straight ahead and said indifferently.
"Is it because of the doctor-patient dispute?" Ji Xiang asked.
"No," Liu Zhuren said. "There are many ways to resolve so-called doctor-patient disputes. What I mean is—in the past, one had to endure the bitterest of the bitter to become a person above others; now, one must be born well to become a person above others."
Ji Xiang was speechless.
Liu Zhuren was silent for a few seconds, then turned his head to look at Ji Xiang.
Ji Xiang smiled and said nothing.
"The two of us... forget it, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to go to that kind of occasion," Liu Zhuren sighed. "It would be as strange as a sheep suddenly appearing in a pack of wolves. Better to send Lao Bai a message and wait for the result."
As he spoke, he took out his phone to compose a WeChat message.
Ji Xiang was also very helpless; he had indeed learned the surgery and could perform it, but Zhao Zhuren had been slow to call, so he figured he wouldn't be allowed to do it.
*Sigh*, I still need to climb higher. At the very least, when I want to perform a surgery, I should be able to do it without having to swallow this kind of indignation!
Ji Xiang made up his mind.
If Ji Xiang had been in a state of chaos before this, then this incident and Liu Zhuren's earnest words had cleared away the chaos and confusion.
"Let's go." After finishing the WeChat message and hitting send, Liu Zhuren stood up and patted Ji Xiang. "Go back to the ward and wait. You come with me; don't go to the Orthopedics Department."
Ji Xiang knew very well that Liu Zhuren was afraid he would be impulsive and wanted to "keep an eye" on him to prevent him from rushing in and becoming a scapegoat.
"Thank you, Zhuren." Although Ji Xiang was unconvinced, he knew better and said respectfully.
"There's no need for such polite words," Liu Zhuren said. "Come back with me and wait for news. I suspect they will perform an open surgery."
"Alright." Ji Xiang glanced at the System Panel in the top right corner of his field of vision; there was no regret, only a faint sadness.
But he also understood that in a mature system, all regulations have meaning. It is inevitably the path with the lowest cost and the least likelihood of making mistakes.
Whether one can follow it, however, is another matter.
Ji Xiang was obedient and did not insist on his own way, instead following Liu Zhuren to the Urology Department.
The two first checked on the Patient, and seeing that the Patient had regained consciousness from anesthesia after today's surgery, with smooth drainage and stable vital signs, they felt relieved.
Liu Zhuren pulled Ji Xiang into his office, had Ji Xiang sit down, and opened a cabinet to take out a teapot.
"I put this set together some years ago, planning to drink from it whenever I had time."
"Oh? A purple clay teapot by Shi Dabin?" Ji Xiang said.
Hearing Ji Xiang say this, Liu Zhuren's eyes lit up, but he was facing away from Ji Xiang, so the flash of light in his eyes vanished immediately.
Not many people play with purple clay teapots, and even fewer know of Shi Dabin, yet Ji Xiang had recognized it at a glance.
Liu Zhuren guessed that Ji Xiang must have a scholarly family background; at the very least, someone in his family could afford a Shi Dabin purple clay teapot.
"They aren't common to see nowadays."
"It's alright; Shi Dabin is still famous for making decorative vessels," Ji Xiang said.
"Decorative vessels?" Liu Zhuren was taken aback.
Ji Xiang did not continue the topic, quietly watching Liu Zhuren boil water and brew tea.
This process required a calm heart and mind, but today Liu Zhuren seemed to have something on his mind; he couldn't settle down, acting clumsy and looking somewhat ridiculous.
Just as the water boiled, Ji Xiang's phone rang.
"Xiao Ji, I'm sorry," Zhao Xiangming apologized after the call connected.
"Zhao Zhuren, don't say that," Ji Xiang quickly said politely. "What happened?"
"The whole-hospital consultation decided that the risks of Interventional Surgery were too high, so they rejected it," Zhao Xiangming said. "They have already gone back to the operating room to prepare for an open surgery."
Ji Xiang's heart stirred; the task in the top right corner of his field of vision had not disappeared.
"Oh, open surgery is fine too, it's just a bit riskier," Ji Xiang said.
"I'll talk to you later, I'm going to go take a look. By the way, Xiao Ji, are you still in the operating room?"
"We finished and already came down," Ji Xiang said. "We're in Liu Zhuren's office."
Hanging up the phone, Ji Xiang put it away.
"That's good."
Liu Zhuren heard their conversation and said with a smile.
"Liu Zhuren, it takes five years to promote to Attending Physician; is there any way to do it early?" Ji Xiang asked.
"You're talking about an exceptional promotion," Liu Zhuren laughed. Of course, an old fox like him couldn't be fooled about what Ji Xiang was thinking. "An exceptional promotion is very difficult for others, but for you, it's not difficult."
"I've discussed it with Lao Bai; the scientific research on hand needs to at least get a provincial-level natural science award."
"With a provincial-level natural science award, isn't an exceptional promotion simple?"
Ji Xiang lowered his head slightly, lost in thought.
"In short, taking it slow is the fastest way; I think highly of you," Liu Zhuren said. "You should first pass the exam for your Practicing Certificate, and then worry about the provincial-level natural science award selection and the exceptional promotion."
"However, the difficulty you will face is..."
Just as he was speaking, his phone rang.
Liu Zhuren picked up his phone, slowly tapped it, and glanced at it.
"Lao Bai replied, saying they are going up for the surgery," Liu Zhuren said softly. "Lao Bai finally..."
"What?"
"He didn't say, but he asked where you are," Liu Zhuren said leisurely. "Xiao Ji, let me ask you one thing."
"Please go ahead, Liu Zhuren."
"Actually, it's Lao Bai asking, he just didn't say it," Liu Zhuren said. "If the surgery to remove it fails, and that knot is tied tight inside, can you still save the Patient?"
"I can!" Ji Xiang gave a definitive answer.
"!!!"
A flurry of exclamation marks erupted in Liu Zhuren's mind.
However, he did not show it on his face, feigning relaxation as he began to scald the purple clay teapot.
"But does our hospital have a 12F catheter? This thing isn't common; it's only needed for aortic Interventional Surgery."
Liu Zhuren's hand trembled, and he nearly scalded himself.
"I'll ask."
Bai Chuzhang stood in the Operating Room, wearing Lead Clothing.
He had specifically requested the Operating Room for Hybrid Surgery, and no one else had any objections to this.
The Surgery Department was ready; while pulling the Swan-Ganz catheter out, they stepped on the pedal to monitor the situation inside the blood vessels.
Originally, the Swan-Ganz floating catheter had only formed a loose knot, not tight at all, leaving the possibility that Zhao Xiangming mentioned.
But as the floating catheter was pulled out, this knot became tighter and tighter, until there was no longer any possibility of it coming undone.
The more Bai Chuzhang watched, the colder his heart grew.
When it was pulled to the position of the Swan-Ganz catheter insertion in the jugular vein, the Director of the Vascular Department was in a dilemma.
"Director Bai," he stopped stepping on the pedal, turned around, and said to Bai Chuzhang, "It's too long and too thick; it needs at least a 6cm incision. Moreover, the Patient's heart rate was abnormal for a moment just now, so I didn't dare to continue. What do you think..."
Bai Chuzhang sighed deeply, noncommittal.
He knew what the Director of the Vascular Department meant; if they pulled it any further, once the nerve tissue was stimulated, if a vagus nerve excitation caused cardiac arrest, he did not want to bear the responsibility.
"What do you think..." Director Wang of the Vascular Department knew Bai Chuzhang understood, so he didn't explain further, but asked instead.
"Wait a moment, I will go report to Dean Zhao."
