Chapter 339: The Pervert

~7 min read 1,339 words

However, Meng Qingfei only froze for a moment and did not make any excessive movements.

Ji Xiang saw this, but he didn't ask too much. After the Patient left, he found a quiet moment to ask, "Meng Laoshi, I noticed you seemed a bit reluctant when you gave the Patient the admission form just now."

Reluctant—a well-chosen word.

Meng Qingfei did indeed look like a miser, stingy with the admission notice in his hand. But in the end, unable to find an excuse, he still handed the admission notice to the Patient with lingering reluctance.

"It's a strange feeling. I keep feeling like there's something wrong with the Patient. Xiao Ji, help me think it over—where exactly is the problem?" Meng Qingfei frowned and muttered to himself.

"There are no problems. The Patient has ruled out Cholecystitis, Gallstones, Urological Calculus, and Ectopic Pregnancy. Moreover, the physical signs are obvious: pain around the umbilicus shifting to the right lower quadrant. Although the blood count on the lab report isn't high, it's definitely Acute Appendicitis," Ji Xiang said matter-of-factly.

"That may be so, but I still feel like something is wrong."

Meng Qingfei stopped talking after saying this, frowning as he sank into deep thought alone.

Ji Xiang didn't disturb him, only helping Meng Qingfei with his work. After a period of training in the Emergency Department, Ji Xiang had now basically become a very standard Emergency Department Doctor, handling things in an orderly fashion and growing rapidly.

Taking advantage of a lull, Ji Xiang held his breath and focused, entering the System Operating Room.

"Teacher." Ji Xiang recounted the situation he had encountered to the System NPC.

"That is how it is." The System NPC didn't find it strange. "Experienced Clinical doctors will notice some very key details. When I say 'key,' what's actually more important is the details."

"Do you understand what I mean?"

"I think I understand." Ji Xiang, possessing extremely high Comprehension, nodded. "Teacher, is it that the Patient's overly obvious physical signs cause people to misunderstand and overlook the small, truly important signs, thus leading to a misdiagnosis?"

"Yes." The System NPC nodded.

"Then I should think about it too." Ji Xiang frowned.

"Go and talk to that Doctor Meng. This intuition is an extremely important part of Clinical experience," the System NPC said earnestly.

Intuition—to think it was actually an important part of Clinical practice. If this had been a few months ago, Ji Xiang would certainly have scoffed at it.

But based on his understanding of the System NPC and Meng Qingfei, he knew this statement was correct.

Ji Xiang returned and saw Meng Qingfei still deep in thought. He asked, "Meng Laoshi, do you feel like there is something important that you saw but missed?"

"Yes!" Meng Qingfei nodded. "I've replayed that Patient in my mind many times; there's no way there's a misdiagnosis. But whenever I think of her, I vaguely feel like something is wrong."

If it were a Doctor from the Urology Department, they would be mocking Meng Qingfei at this point, saying something like he was just looking at the young woman because she was pretty, making a crude joke.

But Ji Xiang was not that kind of person; he was very serious, and his thoughts didn't even head in that direction.

"If you can't find something in daily life, you can wait a while; perhaps it will appear before your eyes in a few days." Meng Qingfei frowned. "But the Patient has already been admitted. If we delay for a few hours, once she goes under the knife for surgery..."

As Meng Qingfei spoke, he cursed in a low voice, "Damn it, where exactly is the problem?"

Ji Xiang had experienced Empathy many times, so he possessed a near-instinctive reaction.

If the diagnosis is wrong and the patient goes under the knife, the Patient will still be in pain after the surgery...

Neither the Doctor, the Patient, nor the Family Member could accept that.

After saying a few words, Meng Qingfei stopped talking and fell silent. Ji Xiang didn't chat with Meng Qingfei or disturb him, but instead dismantled the process of Meng Qingfei's physical examination frame by frame in his mind.

Nothing wrong—not a single issue.

Whether looking at the Patient's chief complaint, the physical examination, or the Clinical Auxiliary examinations, it all belonged to a very common, typical case of Acute Appendicitis.

After more than ten minutes, Meng Qingfei's train of thought was interrupted by a Patient. After he finished handling the emergency patient, he simply stood up, gave a word to the Internal Medicine Department doctor to help watch for a few minutes, and trotted off to the Fifteenth Ward of Gastrointestinal Surgery.

Ji Xiang followed Meng Qingfei, also curious about what Meng Qingfei was thinking.

Arriving at the Fifteenth Ward, Meng Qingfei didn't stand on ceremony; seeing a Nurse, he shouted directly, "Where is your Chief Resident?"

The Nurse was startled. "Holy crap, Brother Meng, why is it you! Where's the patient? Car accident? Or a knife wound?!"

The Doctor on duty in the Emergency Surgery department had rushed over with the Patient, guessing that the Patient's blood pressure was approaching zero. After the Nurse asked, she subconsciously went to grab the sphygmomanometer to prepare for resuscitation.

Meng Qingfei realized his attitude was problematic and softened his tone. "No emergency patient. I just admitted a female patient with Acute Appendicitis; she's been admitted, right?"

"She's in. The Chief Resident said to prepare for surgery. She's just finished the skin prep, but the operating room is full of C-sections, so we're still waiting."

Meng Qingfei felt slightly more at ease and laughed. "With the birth rate so low now, I didn't expect there to be so many C-sections."

"Sigh, the pregnant women in our Provincial Hospital all flock to the First Hospital and Second Hospital; the Maternity Hospital has long been empty of patients," the Nurse said.

"Old Meng, why are you here?" The Gastrointestinal Chief Resident heard someone talking, came out, saw it was Meng Qingfei, and walked up to him. "Another patient? Your shift is so intense. When are you retiring?"

"No, I'm not that washed up," Meng Qingfei said. "Where is the female patient admitted earlier with a diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis? I want to go take a look."

The Gastrointestinal Chief Resident laughed. "Old Meng, you're going too far; it doesn't sound good if word gets out."

"What are you thinking?" Meng Qingfei scolded. "Did you perform a physical exam?"

"Huh?" The Gastrointestinal Chief Resident was stunned.

"Is it Acute Appendicitis?"

"It is. You, Old Meng, gave the diagnosis, so how could it not be?" the Gastrointestinal Chief Resident retorted.

But a few seconds later, he realized something. "Old Meng, is there another problem? Did you draw blood from the patient? Does she have an infectious disease? I just finished the physical exam and didn't wash my hands, damn it."

"No infectious disease, where is your mind wandering?" Meng Qingfei said. "I just have a feeling something is wrong; it doesn't seem like Appendicitis."

"Ha, stop joking, how is that possible?" the Gastrointestinal Chief Resident said. "I also performed a physical exam; it's definitely Appendicitis. You did so many tests and ruled out all the diseases that needed to be ruled out. After the Family Member came up, they were even whispering behind your back, saying that doctors nowadays can't diagnose without machine tests."

Meng Qingfei ignored this level of ridicule entirely. He said it again, and the Gastrointestinal Chief Resident took him to see the Patient.

Under the strange gaze of the Family Member, Meng Qingfei performed the physical examination once more.

The tenderness at McBurney's Point was quite obvious; the diagnosis of Appendicitis was beyond doubt.

Leaving the ward, the Gastrointestinal Chief Resident whispered with a smile, "Old Meng, stop fussing. Look at the look in the Family Member's eyes; they probably think you're a pervert. If you keep fussing, they're going to start a fight."
