Chapter 419: Soft Knives
"Who are you angry with?" The director of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department was over fifty, with graying hair and gold-rimmed glasses. Seeing Zhai Yuhan enter with a pout, he looked up and peered over the top of his glasses.
"Boss, that Standardized Training Student Ji Xiang, who got the top national score, is just too arrogant! He really thinks that getting a perfect score on an exam means he can handle clinical work with ease. You didn't see it—he acts as if he's been grinding away in clinical practice for over a decade, and he even said the reason he came to participate in the show was to promote a New Surgical Technique," Zhai Yuhan said indignantly.
"Heh." The director of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department chuckled. "It's just for the show's effect; you have to show some growth. Only growth and contrast will attract people's attention."
"Growth? Boss, you didn't see how arrogant that Standardized Training Student named Ji Xiang is; he actually handed in his written exam in twenty minutes!" Zhai Yuhan mentioned the word "arrogant" once again.
Yang Zhuren did not understand why Zhai Yuhan, Zhai Zong, was acting so out of character. He watched her quietly for a few seconds and said calmly, "The production team decided on short notice to arrange for him to be in our department, rotating for a few days first, and then he'll go to the Urology Department."
"He has to rotate too?!" Zhai Yuhan was surprised.
"The production team contacted the hospital; they provided a large sponsorship, and one of the conditions was that if conditions permit, this little guy named Ji Xiang must perform two surgeries of some kind at our hospital."
"!!!" Zhai Yuhan was somewhat shocked.
The production team actually had such great influence, and they were indulging that arrogant little guy so much! Zhai Yuhan expressed her lack of understanding.
You have to realize, this is a hospital!
Perhaps it was possible for interns to participate to some extent in a law firm during the last season of this variety show, but wanting to perform surgery in a hospital—wouldn't that be a bit rash?!
"Go take them around to see the clinical side, just take a look at some patients." The director smiled. "I just took a look at the Medical Record; Bed 12-3 is a long-term Patient. I've already spoken to the Patient; the situation is quite complex. You take them to go see."
Looking at the mischievous smile on the director's face, Zhai Yuhan immediately knew that the director was intentionally making things difficult for these two young Doctors.
The Patient's diagnosis was Acute Ascending Cholangitis; after having their Gallbladder removed two years ago, they had been in pain once or twice every year.
Their symptoms weren't severe either; in any case, they just "clung" to the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery department.
There was no way to forcefully kick out this kind of long-term Patient; after all, it was post-surgical pain.
The headache for the department regarding this Patient was that they didn't want to undergo any more examinations; every time they were hospitalized, they would just get a few days of Antibiotic, and if it didn't hurt, they would be discharged.
Taking Ji Xiang and the other one to see this Patient, Zhai Yuhan's mind raced, and she immediately thought of the Patient's countless abnormal laboratory indicators. Even she found it a headache to look at, let alone an undergraduate Standardized Training Student and a Doctor of Philosophy student doing basic research.
Without any clinical experience, they would definitely be bewildered when encountering a tricky Patient.
The director's intention was to first let them know how difficult the daily work of a clinical Doctor usually is, also known as giving them a warning, a bit of a "stick" to knock them down a peg.
The Patient was a long-term Patient and relatively easy to talk to; recording a reality show is easier said than done, and many emergency Patients are simply impossible to communicate with.
The boss is still the most experienced, Zhai Yuhan thought with admiration.
"Boss, alright, then I'll take them."
"Little Zhai, mind the scale; don't be too blunt."
"I know." Zhai Yuhan nodded, turned around, and walked out, having prepared her soft knives.
Returning to the Doctor's Office and seeing the camera filming, Zhai Yuhan felt a bit irritated.
Is this still a hospital? Who on earth had such a wild imagination to come up with a reality show like this? Although it wouldn't interfere with the treatment of Patients, she found it annoying to look at.
Thinking this in her heart, Zhai Yuhan still adjusted her mindset and put on a kind smile. "Mengmeng, how far have you read in the Medical Record?"
Zhao Mengmeng was a bit confused; clinical things were completely different from the basic research she did.
"Teacher, I've read up to the second Patient. The Patients in our department are all very typical—Cholecystitis, Pancreatitis, Liver Cancer, and so on," Zhao Mengmeng answered somewhat happily.
Zhai Yuhan knew that this one must be so nervous that her mind was a blank, and she was using talking to relieve her tension.
As for "typical," Zhai Yuhan sneered inwardly; she would show them something atypical right away.
"Put down the work in your hands," Zhai Yuhan said. "The director has contacted a Patient; we can record the video for the whole process."
Zhao Mengmeng stood up subconsciously, and Ji Xiang closed the computer interface before standing up.
So annoying. Zhai Yuhan harbored the intention of nitpicking; she had originally wanted to teach Ji Xiang a lesson based on this action, but Ji Xiang had done it without a single flaw.
According to the rules, the work interface on the computer must be closed when a person leaves, otherwise other Doctors or even Patients and Family Members might use it.
But in practice, not many people can manage to turn off the lights when they leave.
Sometimes you just go out to ask about a medical history, and there is absolutely no need to close the interface, just like now.
Zhai Yuhan had already thought of several cases, ready to give the arrogant little Standardized Training Student a head-on blow. But Ji Xiang's actions blocked all the words she wanted to say.
So annoying.
Could it be that Ji Xiang knew she was going to nitpick? Zhai Yuhan pondered.
She took Ji Xiang and Zhao Mengmeng to the ward with the camera following behind. Zhai Yuhan didn't show that she was targeting Ji Xiang, but instead spoke in a gentle and soft voice the whole way, explaining the Patient's past medical history to the two young Doctors.
"Two years post-surgery, and the Patient has been in pain the whole time?" Ji Xiang frowned and pondered after Zhai Yuhan finished speaking.
"Not the whole time, just occasionally. It's diagnosed as Acute Ascending Cholangitis, and the symptoms are relieved after intravenous infusion of Cefoperazone-Tazobactam."
"Teacher, have any other examinations been done?"
"Heh, you'll have to communicate that with the Patient." Zhai Yuhan handed this "arduous" task to Ji Xiang.
The Patient very firmly refused to undergo other examinations; in the Patient's view, it was just that infections occurred frequently after the Gallbladder was removed, and it wasn't like there was no way to treat it, so why do so many examinations?
Whether it was the director or Zhai Yuhan, both had communicated with the Patient, but the Patient was as stubborn as a stone.
Ji Xiang was courting disaster; he would likely end up with a face full of blood.
Entering the ward, Zhai Yuhan began to communicate cordially with the Patient. At this moment, the smile on her face was much more genuine, not as perfunctory as when she was facing Ji Xiang.
While asking about the medical history, Zhai Yuhan deliberately left a few loopholes. Seeing Ji Xiang and Zhao Mengmeng recording earnestly, she found it interesting; she really wanted to see how these two little fledglings would be at a loss when facing her questions later.
After she finished chatting with the Patient, Zhai Yuhan felt a bit tired; after all, there was a camera behind her, and she had to appear extremely professional.
She let Ji Xiang and Zhao Mengmeng ask a few more questions, then Zhai Yuhan took the two of them and left.
Returning to the office, Zhai Yuhan asked, "You two look at the Medical Record and tell me what you think."
Seeing Ji Xiang about to speak, she paused and asked, "Mengmeng, tell me your thoughts."
