Chapter 434: Did You Bring Your Parents Along?
The grand ward round of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department concluded, and Yang Zhuren looked at Ji Xiang with new eyes.
He was indeed the medical student who had been personally recruited by Qin, the boss of Shanghai, who had even gone to great lengths to provide him with prestige, inviting an Academician to preside over things only for the student to directly refuse and berate the Academician into a state of social withdrawal.
His basic skills were extremely solid, his clinical experience was rich, and he had resolved two major issues within a single day.
There was nothing wrong with Zhai Yuhan's handling of the situation last night; it was standard procedure for a Patient to go to the Emergency Department for observation and for issues to be resolved as they arose, so no fault could be found.
That Ji Xiang was able to "coincidentally" resolve it early was just... Yang Zhuren felt it was merely a matter of Ji Xiang having better luck.
But when added to the observation of the "stubborn" post-cholecystectomy Patient, Yang Zhuren shared the same illusion as Shen Ke in the Review Room—how could this be a medical student who had just graduated and was still a Standardized Training Student? He was clearly an old Attending Physician who had been grinding in the Clinical field for over a decade and had become slippery and shrewd.
Yang Zhuren had seen genius youths before; this world was never short of geniuses.
But geniuses were either super-memorizers who could glance at a monument and recite it, or could memorize textbooks as tall as themselves in three days; or they were super-skilled with their hands, able to perform any surgery after watching it once.
Yet, while Ji Xiang's other merits were still unknown, his attitude toward Patients and his emotional intelligence made Yang Zhuren click his tongue in wonder.
He could persuade a stubborn Patient who firmly refused further examinations, and he could also be attentive to a Patient who had no major issues, running to the Emergency Department to warn the Patient to be careful of choking if they vomited again.
Yang Zhuren said nothing further; his expression remained as usual, but in his heart, he was thinking about Ji Xiang over and over again.
This young man really looked quite good; the production team and the hospital administration had negotiated that they would "select the best" to keep one or two medical students at the end.
Should he keep Ji Xiang for himself?
Once the thought arose, Yang Zhuren found Ji Xiang increasingly pleasing to the eye, and he began to covet this little Intern.
But he had to temper him, to let him know his shortcomings, Yang Zhuren thought to himself.
After finishing the Medical Record of the Gallbladder Torsion, Ji Xiang stood in the corner without saying a word; he did not show arrogance, nor did he deliberately put on a humble expression, and he certainly did not pretend to be diligently studying by using a pen and notebook to record others' case analyses.
He just stood there quietly, not doing a single bit of useless work.
Yang Zhuren particularly appreciated this about Ji Xiang; the more he looked at him, the more pleasing he became, and the more he liked him.
Some young people's "performance without props" was particularly fake, yet they were tireless in doing it; one really had to wonder what they were thinking.
"Zhuren, would you like to provide a review?" the professor beside Yang Zhuren whispered.
"No, you all speak."
The professor glanced at the Camera Crew.
Yang Zhuren let out a hum, "Ignore them."
The Attending Professor was helpless and nodded. He did not understand the Zhuren's meaning; at the beginning, Yang Zhuren's words were sharp, not giving the program's interns any face at all.
But now, the Zhuren was silent, only glancing at that young man named Ji Xiang from time to time.
With Yang Zhuren not speaking, the atmosphere suddenly became much softer.
Although the grand ward round organized for the program team ended with a whimper, Fan Dao had no good way to deal with the uncooperative Yang Zhuren.
Fortunately, Ji Xiang's previous performance was prominent enough, brilliant enough, and dramatic enough. With some editing, the program team would have enough to use.
But Fan Dao still felt some regret, and the regret was mainly about Ji Xiang.
This young man did not seem like a young person at all; he had no arrogance, no intention of showing off, and once he finished speaking, that was it—if Yang Zhuren didn't ask him, he was too lazy to say a word of nonsense.
A plot needed sufficient conflict, and Ji Xiang's personality was actually not what a perfect reality show needed.
Like Yang Zhuren, Fan Dao glanced at Ji Xiang from time to time; he loved and hated Ji Xiang at the same time. If this kid performed even more brilliantly, the ratings could rise by another 5 points.
And that was at the very least.
Ji Xiang's hardware was solid enough, and coupled with his medical software being top-notch, he would definitely add a lot of luster to the program.
What a pity.
The subsequent Medical Record reviews were lackluster, but the department had already arranged the time, so the Camera Crew had to slack off.
Two and a half hours later, the meeting ended, and Yang Zhuren gave a perfunctory summary.
Everyone went back to their own business; even if there were no surgeries today, Patients still required various treatments.
During the lunch break, Zhai Yuhan came to Ji Xiang, "Doctor Ji Xiang, are we eating at the cafeteria or ordering in?"
"I..." Ji Xiang hesitated for a moment.
"Don't have a cafeteria card, right?" Zhai Yuhan smiled understandingly, "Then let's order in. Mengmeng, what do you want to eat?"
Zhao Mengmeng looked expressionless, as if wearing a mask, and stared blankly at Zhai Yuhan.
Having only been in the Clinical field for a few days, and in a semi-performative capacity at that, Zhao Mengmeng had already felt the "sinister" nature of the Clinical environment. Her previous values and perceptions had already been shattered.
This world was too sinister; Zhao Mengmeng wanted to return to her ivory tower.
Seeing Zhao Mengmeng looking completely bewildered, Zhai Yuhan knew she had been hit to the point of doubting life, so she looked at Ji Xiang and asked, "Doctor Ji Xiang, what would you like to eat?"
"I'll... I'll handle it," Ji Xiang replied after thinking for a moment.
It was just a meal; although it wouldn't cost much, one couldn't let an Intern foot the bill, so Zhai Yuhan rejected Ji Xiang's proposal.
Ji Xiang didn't insist, but when it came time to order, he ordered a long list of items.
Zhai Yuhan was a little helpless, "Doctor Ji Xiang, enough to eat is fine; ordering so much is wasteful."
"Teacher Zhai, the other two people in my medical team need to eat too," Ji Xiang explained.
Medical team?
Zhai Yuhan was a bit confused.
Interns all came by themselves; Ji Xiang brought his "parents" along?
They probably wanted to see how a variety show was filmed and came to watch the excitement.
Just consider it a vacation.
Zhai Yuhan smiled; this guess was definitely correct.
Also, Ji Xiang was very strong, so strong that he didn't seem like an Intern or a Standardized Training Student at all; as long as one wasn't blind, they would definitely pull him into their medical team.
This was a good "hired gun"—young, tempting, full of vigor, and able to work through the night on surgeries.
Thinking of this, Zhai Yuhan felt an indescribable sensation in her heart.
Although she was already at the peak of her peers as a rare female Resident Chief in the Surgery Department of a top-tier Grade A Tertiary Hospital in the country, Zhai Yuhan just felt she was envious of Ji Xiang, and even felt a little bit of jealousy.
After ordering, Zhai Yuhan began to look at the Medical Record.
Ten-plus minutes later.
"Xiao Ji." A middle-aged man's voice came over.
Zhai Yuhan looked up and saw Zhao Zhe standing at the door.
"You must be the Attending Professor of Ji Xiang's medical team, right?" Zhai Yuhan stood up and asked very politely.
Toward a senior in the medical field, one must certainly give sufficient respect; Zhai Yuhan did not neglect this just because they came from a hospital with a lower rank than her own.
"Oh, I wouldn't dare say that; I'm the one working under Xiao Ji." Zhao Zhe's face was piled with smiles, looking like a total sycophant.
