Chapter 437: What Content Does Everyone Like to Watch?

~8 min read 1,416 words

With Ji Xiang not at the hospital recently, Tang Yan finally felt free.

Only at this moment did Tang Yan realize just how much work Ji Xiang had actually been doing while he was around.

Without having to work overtime to perform surgeries, the hospital's night shifts didn't seem so hateful anymore; everything was returning to normal without her even noticing.

But tonight, Tang Yan couldn't run off to play; she received a call from Feng Yuqing, inviting her to watch the premiere of a variety show together.

Arriving at Feng Yuqing's place, Tang Yan was rather cautious; after all, she hadn't been doing much work lately, and she still felt a bit guilty when facing the "Big Boss."

"Yan'er, you saw the promotional poster, right?" Feng Yuqing asked with a smile.

"I saw it. My colleagues at the hospital all think Ji Xiang is going to leave," Tang Yan said.

"Leave?"

"If you can be a star, who would want to be a doctor? You're tired as a dog every day and don't even make much money. Look at Mao Mao, going from a nurse to a star, it only took one talent show," Tang Yan said. "If Mao Mao had stayed a male nurse, he'd probably have a herniated disc by now. Next stop, Heavenly King!"

As she spoke, Tang Yan clenched her fist and struck a pose of determination.

"Why a herniated disc?" Feng Yuqing asked.

Unless they were medical staff, most people wouldn't understand this kind of joke.

"Nurses have to move patients and check for bedsores; it's physical labor. If there's a male nurse, wouldn't they work him to the bone? We have two male nurses in the ICU; one worked for three years, the other for a year and a half, and they'd rather go home and live off their parents than work at the hospital," Tang Yan explained.

"Mao Mao has talent."

"Without talent, they'd rather live off their parents than be a nurse," Tang Yan said. "Doctors are a bit better, but not by much. How great it is to be a star—hold a concert in a few years, and your life is complete."

Feng Yuqing glanced at Tang Yan, and seeing that she was speaking her true thoughts, she smiled slightly.

"How are you all so sure that Ji Xiang can become a hit?" Feng Yuqing asked curiously.

"Sister Yuqing, look at how many people in the entertainment industry actually have the hardware for it," Tang Yan said. "Ji Xiang is tall, has a perky butt..."

"How do you know?" Feng Yuqing frowned.

"Hahaha," Tang Yan laughed. "Surgeons have to stick their butts out to trigger the infrared sensor to open the operating room door after scrubbing in, so if you do a lot of surgeries, your butt gets perky. It's hospital jargon."

"..." Feng Yuqing was speechless.

"Actually, a lot of people are just envious and jealous. I, for one, think Ji Xiang can really make it. Sister Yuqing, if Ji Xiang becomes an overnight sensation, do you think he won't come back?"

"I don't know," Feng Yuqing said.

"Did you watch the show? Did Ji Xiang instantly turn into a little lamb?"

"I didn't watch it. I don't understand hospitals, and I don't know that jargon. For example, what you just said about doing a lot of surgeries making your butt perky—not many people would understand what that means if they don't work in a hospital."

As she spoke, Feng Yuqing couldn't help but chuckle.

On the screen, the commercials had already started playing.

"So many commercials," Tang Yan grumbled. "Sister Yuqing, I heard that the censorship is very strict now. I bet a lot of the things people would actually want to see can't be broadcast. This isn't allowed, that isn't allowed—is it even a hospital anymore?"

"We'll see, look at the results. But Yan'er, what kind of fresh hospital stories do you think people would want to see?"

"I once went to the thoracic surgery theater and heard an Attending Professor from the Thoracic Surgery Department say he went to the countryside to have fun and encountered a patient with atrial fibrillation."

"What is atrial fibrillation?" Feng Yuqing asked.

"It's... it's when you absolutely have to defibrillate, the kind where you use two electric irons to shock someone awake," Tang Yan explained simply.

"Oh, I see."

"It turned out the small rural hospital only had one defibrillator, and it was out of power. In the Emergency Vehicle, their doctors had no idea what to do."

"So the person died," Feng Yuqing said indifferently.

She kept watching the screen, not even letting the commercials pass by. As for whether the patient in Tang Yan's story lived or died, Feng Yuqing didn't really care.

"No, the Attending Professor from Thoracic Surgery, in his desperation, cut the chest wall open directly, stuck his hand in along the ribs, and squeezed the heart directly to help defibrillate."

"Oh?!" Feng Yuqing's attention was instantly captured; she understood what Tang Yan meant. "That kind of thing won't work; variety shows won't allow it to be broadcast. If people saw something that intense and a few of them went into cardiac arrest, who could handle that?"

"Exactly, that's why I think it's boring. Or, Sister Yuqing, you should just get Netflix to film a sequel to House, and call it Doctor Ji Xiang."

"Huh? That actually sounds interesting."

"Doesn't Ji Xiang have a better temperament than Doctor House? A while ago, it was said that Ji Xiang went to the Emergency Department to find a doctor he got along with and encountered a patient in cardiac arrest. Ji Xiang jumped right on top of the patient to perform chest compressions—he was so cool!"

"Jumped on?"

"That's basically what it means. Usually, when a junior doctor encounters a situation like that, who would dare to act? But Ji Xiang dared. He turned and leaped onto the gurney, kneeling on the patient to perform chest compressions. It's a pity none of those scenes can be shown."

The two chatted idly, waiting for the show to start.

But there were so many commercials, enough to make one annoyed.

"Sister Yuqing, do you think there will be any Medical Disputes in the variety show?"

"Probably not," Feng Yuqing said. "You all always talk about Medical Disputes, are there really that many?"

"Ha, when I first started working, I heard a story from Sui Zhuren in the Orthopedics Department," Tang Yan said, excitedly dodging the commercials to gossip to Feng Yuqing. "They said there was a car accident, and the injured party was a woman around thirty with a fractured ulna and radius. After the surgery, when she was ready to be discharged, she refused to leave because the other party wouldn't come to pay the bill."

"That kind of thing counts as a Medical Dispute?" Feng Yuqing said with disdain; she wasn't interested at all.

"Listen to me," Tang Yan continued. "Later, a young man came in. He had ruptured his Achilles Tendon while working at his company, had surgery, and was put in a cast. The surgery wasn't difficult, and he recovered very well post-op. But suddenly, one day, the young man's cast snapped at the knee joint."

"Maybe you guys didn't wrap it tight enough."

"Heh heh, who knows? I said the same thing at the time, and Sui Zhuren was scared too. When we checked, the Achilles Tendon had ruptured again. When we asked about the situation, the patient just said he fell while going to the restroom, the cast broke, and the Achilles Tendon ruptured again."

"In a hospital, this kind of injury definitely has something to do with the hospital, so Sui Zhuren started checking the surveillance footage."

"And then?"

"They looked for a long time but couldn't find anything. The young man wouldn't leave the hospital either, saying that if he ended up disabled, his company wouldn't count it as a work-related injury, so he had to be fully healed before being discharged."

"So the two of them just stayed there, and they stayed for months. We told the Medical Affairs Department, but who would dare kick them out? Kicking them out is easy, but the aftermath is a huge headache. Bai Chuzhang scolded Sui Zhuren and told him to solve it himself."

"Passing the buck, that's normal. Tell me, did this man and woman hook up?" Feng Yuqing asked.

This was easy to guess.
