Chapter 440: Not What I Imagined (League Leader Foucs Bonus Chapter ×5)
Bai Chuzhang and Liu Zhuren sat in a private room, the two old men also watching this variety show.
Bai Chuzhang knew Zhai Yuhan's little schemes like the back of his hand; seeing Ji Xiang fall into the trap, he frowned slightly.
"Lao Bai, isn't this a variety show? How did it get so difficult? Is there some grudge against Xiao Ji?" Liu Zhi was a bit unhappy, his voice laced with resentment, as if Zhai Yuhan had thrown his child into a well.
"Who knows? Perhaps the Dean over at the Affiliated Hospital agreed to film the variety show, but the department director and the Resident Chief aren't happy about it," Bai Chuzhang said. "Those in clinical practice rarely like variety shows. They're exhausted like dogs every day, and now they have to cater to these big shots. If it were you, you'd definitely want to make the Intern look like a fool."
"But you can't take it out on Xiao Ji," Liu Zhuren said, standing up for Ji Xiang. "What the hell is this? Making a Standardized Training Doctor do something the department director can't handle? It's too low-class; anyone with a bit of clinical knowledge can see it at a glance."
Bai Chuzhang looked at Liu Zhi with great interest.
"What kind of look are you giving me?"
"Dazhi, do you really have no confidence in Ji Xiang?"
"Lao Bai, if it were surgery, I believe Ji Xiang could perform even a Hepatobiliary Surgery Department procedure decently," Liu Zhuren said. "But this is communication!"
"I remember you telling me about a Renal Auto-amputation handover," Bai Chuzhang smiled slightly. "Back then, when Ji Xiang had just arrived in your Urology Department, he was better than even Wu Zong at explaining such a rare complication."
"..." Liu Zhuren paused, unable to understand why Bai Chuzhang had such great confidence in Ji Xiang, even more so than he did himself.
"Rationally," Bai Chuzhang pointed to his own head, "I think Ji Xiang can't handle it, but subconsciously, I feel he can. This is a real experience. By the way, Dazhi, do you remember that car accident patient from 12 years ago?"
That was a very "unlucky" patient.
Driving in the residential compound at no more than 20 mph, the driver got distracted and hit a stone bollard on the side of the road.
Theoretically, a speed of 20 mph shouldn't cause any problems, but that time, the airbag deployed.
When the patient was sent to the hospital, they were clear-headed and articulate, with no signs of trauma other than some bruising on their face, and they didn't feel there would be any issues.
After the Emergency Department performed a head CT and saw nothing wrong, they prepared to let the patient go home.
After the incident, the family pulled strings to find Bai Chuzhang, who was the Resident Chief at the time. He went to the Emergency Department, took one look, and after much hesitation, admitted the patient.
At the time, Liu Zhuren had asked him why, and Bai Chuzhang's explanation was—intuition.
As it turned out, Bai Chuzhang's intuition was correct; on the third day after admission, the patient began to have difficulty moving.
Bai Chuzhang ignored the opinion of the Neurosurgery Department director entirely, contacted the Vascular Department, pushed the patient to get an angiography, and proved it was a carotid artery intimal avulsion. He had a stent placed immediately, stabilizing the condition.
If there had been even the slightest issue with the handling of that patient, they surely would have died.
Now, that intuition had returned.
But Liu Zhi still didn't believe it. He glanced at Bai Chuzhang and shook his head slightly, "Lao Bai, I think it won't work. Besides, you're a Director of Medical Affairs, why are you so fond of metaphysics?"
"Just watch slowly, no need to rush," Bai Chuzhang's lips curled upward.
"What is Ji Xiang doing?" Feng Yuqing asked.
"It seems he's trying to solve something the local hospital director couldn't. Why are these people from the South so mean? Making Ji Xiang do what the director can't," Tang Yan replied indignantly.
She wasn't Dean Zhao, nor was she Bai Chuzhang, but having struggled in clinical practice for a few years, she saw through the essence immediately.
Even so, Tang Yan always felt something was wrong.
The camera flashed, clearly edited, as Ji Xiang walked into Hao Bing Fang, the final shot being his back.
Afterward, the footage was also processed; it must have been an interview done after the fact.
Zhai Yuhan sat in front of the camera, introducing the patient's medical history: surgery, frequent abdominal pain post-surgery, and appointments for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, but the patient would always get better after 2-3 days of intravenous Antibiotic.
Eventually, the patient wasn't even afraid anymore, feeling they just had a bit of inflammation that could be treated with medicine, so there was no need for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Director Yang and Zhai Yuhan had tried to work with the patient many times, suggesting they complete the relevant examinations, but were rejected by the patient every time.
"Yan'er, are the patients you encounter at the hospital all this difficult? They're already at the hospital, why are they so disobedient? Is it because the patient has no money and is worried the doctor will empty their wallet?" Feng Yuqing asked.
"Not really, only a very small number of patients are like this," Tang Yan said, worried, her eyelashes fluttering. "It actually has nothing to do with whether the patient has money or not. A few years ago, didn't a company General Manager feel discomfort in the precordial area and go to the Emergency Department? The doctor suggested hospitalization, and he just went straight home."
"Oh, him," Feng Yuqing said. "I think he died of a Myocardial Infarction the next day."
"Many people are like that; they find hospitalization troublesome and don't believe they have a serious illness that requires inpatient treatment. I suspect this patient belongs to that type; simply put, they are stubborn."
"Do you think Ji Xiang can solve it?"
"Impossible," Tang Yan said decisively. "Sister Yuqing, you don't know how many strange people we encounter in clinical practice. There are many whose thought processes you simply cannot fathom."
"For example?"
"There are many examples. Like one time, a cesarean section was all prepped and ready to go. I scrubbed in, and then they started kicking the door from the outside. The Obstetrics Department doctor got beaten up, and the family said they wouldn't do the cesarean section no matter what, but it was a difficult labor. What would you say to do?"
Tang Yan's explanation was a bit chaotic, but Feng Yuqing could still understand.
"The family just said the hospital was doing surgery just for the sake of surgery, even though there is a quota for natural births every year. Damn it!" Tang Yan cursed.
"What?" Feng Yuqing looked at her curiously.
"It's just that public opinion says cesarean sections are bad, so every year a certain percentage of pregnant women must have natural births, otherwise the hospital gets scolded and fined. So the current situation in hospitals is that as long as it's possible, the Obstetrics Department doctor definitely won't perform surgery."
As they were chatting, Ji Xiang walked back into the frame.
"Doctor Ji, what was the result?" Zhai Yuhan asked with a smile.
Tang Yan saw Zhai Yuhan's smile and subconsciously gave her a dirty look.
"Bitch!" Tang Yan cursed.
"Hahaha, why do I feel like you've become short-tempered?"
"She is deliberately making things difficult for Ji Xiang!"
"Teacher, the patient has agreed," Ji Xiang said.
Ji Xiang's answer shattered all of Tang Yan's anger; her eyelashes fluttered as she stared blankly at the screen.
"Yan'er, it seems it wasn't that hard. Look, Ji Xiang solved the problem, didn't he?" Feng Yuqing laughed.
Tang Yan was somewhat dazed.
This,
was not what she had imagined.
Zhao Jixiang also stared blankly at Ji Xiang on the screen, falling into self-doubt.
