Chapter 574: The Credibility of Examinations at Lower-Level Hospitals is Low

~7 min read 1,363 words

Ji Xiang's slight "stutter" was captured by the camera and caught by Bai Chuzhang when the program aired.

"I always feel Xiao Ji is a bit strange," Bai Chuzhang muttered to himself. "He often zones out. There was another time just now, did you notice?"

"Isn't it normal to space out and let your mind go blank for a moment?" Liu Zhuren said dismissively.

"It's not that kind of blanking out, but rather the feeling of lag when playing online games back when internet speeds were slow."

"You mean high ping," Liu Zhuren laughed. "I don't see it at all. Lao Bai, you've been in the Medical Affairs Department too long, you've become superstitious."

"Back when I played World of Warcraft, the machine and internet speed couldn't keep up... You remember I had anti-stealth capabilities, right?" Bai Chuzhang asked.

Liu Zhuren laughed heartily.

The so-called anti-stealth was because the machine would lag; although the rogue was stealthed and invisible to the naked eye, the machine had to process so much information that it would make a buzzing sound.

This "phenomenon" was discovered by Bai Chuzhang first, and he was invincible in wilderness combat.

Bai Chuzhang didn't say much more; he smiled slightly and continued watching the program.

In truth, Bai Chuzhang also knew that the "lag" he sensed was closer to metaphysics, but every time he encountered similar situations, Ji Xiang seemed like a different person.

The last time was when they encountered a female Patient with chronic carbon monoxide poisoning; one second Ji Xiang insisted on calling the police, looking exactly like he did when he was young. But after a stutter, Ji Xiang abandoned that spirited idea and chose to let the Patient decide for herself.

Bai Chuzhang had thought a lot about what exactly happened, but he never got the answer he wanted.

The program continued, and next, the Interns and their senior Doctors went to the Outpatient Department.

It was time for the popular segment of working in the Outpatient Department again.

Last time, the Affiliated Hospital brought in their own Doctors and Nurses to pose as Patients, giving the Interns many difficult problems. Especially Ji Xiang; one could even say Ji Xiang encountered deliberate obstruction.

This time was different; it was a genuine Outpatient session.

Clearly, real Outpatient work is relatively boring and uninteresting; the program team didn't know how many times they had to edit it to barely cut together a segment worth watching.

The awkwardness of young Doctors just coming into contact with Clinical work was displayed vividly. After every consultation, the supervising teacher would ask a pile of questions, and some teachers were even stern and harsh, nearly scaring the Interns to tears.

But when the camera turned to Ji Xiang and Zou Zhuren, the style changed.

Ji Xiang sat and took the medical history, Zou Zhuren then provided the diagnosis, and Ji Xiang began typing on the keyboard to prescribe medicine and order examinations.

Because it was a variety show, the number of Patients arranged and those willing to be on camera wasn't high, so the two were chatting and laughing.

Since the first episode, there had been many such scenes, and the further it went, the more severe that huge sense of dissonance became.

"The purpose of the program has changed," Liu Zhuren said, looking at Ji Xiang with a smile. "The first two seasons of the program showed the characteristics of a certain industry through Interns; to be honest, the content of this program was quite attractive. But once Ji Xiang went on, the whole program changed flavor."

"Xiao Ji is already a seasoned, veteran Doctor, and the particularly slick kind at that. Once he comes into contact with various rules, he understands them perfectly," Bai Chuzhang said.

"It's really fast; not even half a year, and he's become a veteran Doctor," Liu Zhuren remarked with emotion.

On screen, the harmonious scene between Ji Xiang and Zou Zhuren was interrupted as a male Patient walked in.

"Zhuren, hello."

The Patient had already been informed that the extra outpatient slot Zou Zhuren added was for a variety show and that there were cameras inside.

He walked in very cautiously, his face a bit pale, looking slightly weak.

"Where are you uncomfortable?" Zou Zhuren asked.

"I'm from Xinglong Town," the Patient said. "I've had blood in my stool for five years, once or twice every month."

He felt a bit embarrassed when he said this.

"Blood in your stool for over five years?" Zou Zhuren frowned, his expression turning serious. "Have you had examinations done locally? Let me see."

The Patient handed his past medical records to Zou Zhuren.

Hemoglobin was 70, the Gastrointestinal Endoscope showed no abnormalities, and the Ultrasound of all organs also showed nothing abnormal.

While Zou Zhuren was looking at the lab report, Ji Xiang suddenly asked, "How was your health before the first time you bled five years ago?"

"It was okay, occasionally I had abdominal pain, I had examinations done, but they didn't find any problems."

"What examinations did you have?"

"Gastrointestinal Endoscope."

"Capsule or regular?"

"Both." The Patient answered everything truthfully following Ji Xiang's inquiry.

"Did the Capsule Gastrointestinal Endoscope report say everything was fine?" Ji Xiang asked with a calm expression.

"It was fine."

"Did the capsule pass through smoothly?"

"It was okay."

The Patient did not show impatience in the face of the young Doctor's questioning; after all, there was a camera right behind them, and everyone tries to show enough grace and quality in public.

Zou Zhuren listened to the conversation between Ji Xiang and the Patient while looking at the report. However, he didn't say anything, instead asking the Patient to lie down, pulling the curtain, and beginning the physical examination.

This part was not shown on screen; after all, it was a physical examination, and although it's fine for a middle-aged man to expose his stomach, the program team was still very careful not to cross the line.

After the examination, Zou Zhuren pressed the hand sanitizer to disinfect his hands.

"There is slight tenderness in the right mid-abdomen, the Gastrointestinal Endoscope report shows no problems..."

He muttered to himself, then looked at Ji Xiang.

"Ji Yisheng Xiang, what do you think?"

"I think it's very necessary to take a CT scan."

"CT?" Zou Zhuren frowned slightly.

It is fine to do a CT for solid organs like the liver, gallbladder, and spleen, but an intestinal CT is basically meaningless. The Patient had already undergone a Gastrointestinal Endoscope, preliminarily ruling out the possibility of a Tumor, so a CT was even more meaningless.

However, Zou Zhuren had the most basic respect for Ji Xiang; he didn't treat Ji Xiang as an ordinary Intern, as long as he could type and write medical orders, he could be his own hands.

In Zou Zhuren's view, Ji Xiang was a Chief Physician just like himself, a Clinical bigwig.

Even if he had opinions on Ji Xiang's diagnosis and treatment, he could only bring them up in private.

"Let's do a CT and see," Zou Zhuren said.

Ji Xiang nimbly filled out the CT request form and handed it to the Patient, then explained in detail where the CT Room was and the fastest way to get there.

Judging by his demeanor, if the Camera Crew weren't there, he would have wanted to take the Patient to get the examination done himself.

After the Patient left, Director Zou glanced over; since there was no next patient for the moment, he said to Ji Xiang, "Doctor Xiao Ji, what was your reasoning for having the Patient get a CT scan? It shouldn't be a Tumor."

"The credibility of examinations done at lower-level hospitals is not high," Ji Xiang said.

"!!!"

"!!!"

Bai Chuzhang and Liu Zhuren expressed great shock after seeing this scene.

Was Ji Xiang wrong to say that? He was not.

Many large Grade A Tertiary Hospitals do not recognize examinations done locally; the more subjective the examination, the less they recognize it, requiring one to be done again in-house.

But very few people would say this out loud in front of a camera lens.
