Chapter 596: Surgical Taboos

~8 min read 1,414 words

"Feudal superstition?" Bai Chuzhang's lips curled slightly upward. "Back in the day, Copernicus and Galileo weren't accepted by the mainstream either. But then, what happened?"

"Tch, stop talking nonsense, let's talk about serious business," Liu Zhuren pressed.

He was particularly interested in that old Director of Medical Affairs from many years ago.

In a hospital, the position of Director of Medical Affairs is the most critical; the importance of everyone, including the Dean, does not compare to the Director of Medical Affairs.

"Lao Han Chuzhang chatted with that person for a few moments. After he left, Lao Han Chuzhang wanted to be discharged, saying he would go home to eat and drink, and just pass away peacefully in the end."

"When I asked about that person, Lao Han Chuzhang told me a theory."

"A theory?"

"Yes, at the time, Lao Han Chuzhang said he was on very close terms with that old gentleman, but only for major matters would he invite him to 'take a look'."

"They met in the late sixties. At the time, Lao Han Chuzhang took good care of the old gentleman, so there was some personal favor involved," Bai Chuzhang rambled for a moment before returning to the main topic. "It is said that the old gentleman could observe yin and yang as easily as turning over his palm."

"..."

"..."

Liu Zhuren and Peiyang General Manager Ding Xiang both wanted to reach out and touch Bai Chuzhang to see if he had a fever. The so-called observing yin and yang as easily as turning over one's palm was purely a way to fool people.

"Lao Han Chuzhang guessed that this old gentleman would set up a certain method, and then he could see the outcome in a parallel world."

"???"

"For example, I'm saying for example!" Bai Chuzhang's voice was as steady as a mountain, his finger tapping on the notebook. "Lin Jiuze writes down the first treatment plan, then looks up at the patient, seeing the patient's outcome in this parallel world."

"Lao Bai, have you been reading too much *Ball Lightning*?" Liu Zhuren asked in surprise.

"No, I'm just applying the description Lao Han Chuzhang gave of that old gentleman back then to Lin Jiuze. I didn't believe it when I heard it back then either, but seeing Lin Jiuze's strange methods, I remembered this matter."

"And then?" Liu Zhuren asked.

"Lin Jiuze 'sees' the treatment plan is wrong, so he writes a second treatment plan. Still wrong, so he writes a third. He just keeps writing like that until he 'sees' the correct answer."

"My god, this is simply a born doctor!"

"With this ability, one could do anything," Bai Chuzhang laughed. "But it is said there are quite a few limitations; this is what Lao Han Chuzhang told me."

"Is that for real? You aren't making up a story, are you?" Liu Zhuren looked at Bai Chuzhang, full of suspicion.

"If it's a story, it's Lao Han Chuzhang who made it up; I just feel Lin Jiuze is a bit like that old gentleman," Bai Chuzhang said. "If you look at it this way, I feel Xiao Ji is in trouble."

Mentioning Ji Xiang, Liu Zhuren shuddered.

If one were to continue deducing according to Bai Chuzhang's theory, if Ji Xiang were to forcibly take a patient into surgery, the consequences would be unimaginable.

Liu Zhuren pulled out his phone immediately. His hand was shaking, trembling as if he had Parkinson's, and it took a great deal of effort to dial Ji Xiang's number.

"Xiao Ji, are you alright?" Liu Zhuren asked.

"Teacher Liu, I'm fine. Things are pretty good over here. The program will end in 1-2 episodes, and I'll be able to go back soon," Ji Xiang's voice was bright and clear.

Liu Zhuren let out a sigh of relief.

"That's good, that's good, the program..." Liu Zhuren had just wanted to ask for clarification when the phone was snatched away by Bai Chuzhang. "Xiao Ji, it's me."

"Bai Chuzhang, hello," Ji Xiang said.

"Are you sure you won't stay at Hang Yi Da Yi Fu Yuan?"

"Hmm, I won't stay at the Affiliated Hospital; there's still a pile of work to do when I get back. Bai Chuzhang, can I stop rotating? I've been thinking these days that I should concentrate my energy," Ji Xiang said.

"Of course, we'll talk in detail after you return. If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up. Give me a heads-up when you're coming back, and I'll come pick you up."

Having said that, Bai Chuzhang didn't waste a single word and hung up the phone directly.

"Lao Bai?"

"Why are you asking?" Bai Chuzhang said with rare severity. "To be a person, one must understand the rules."

Liu Zhuren was stunned for a moment.

"Respect them but keep your distance, that's what you mean, right?" Ding Xiang interjected.

"Even Lao Ding understands better than you," Bai Chuzhang said.

Liu Zhuren was the type to lose his head out of concern; hearing that Ji Xiang was fine, his heart calmed down. Nodding slightly, Liu Zhuren looked back at the television.

This segment appeared to be recorded on-site. The camera was waiting outside the office, the office door was pushed open, and the doctors inside filed out.

Suddenly, the camera shifted, and the figures of Ji Xiang and Zou Fuzhuren appeared at the end of the ward; they had just walked out of the ward where Lin Jiuze had been looking at the patient.

Finally, Ji Xiang appeared!

"Slurp~" Zou Fuzhuren first sucked in some saliva. He seemed to be in a great hurry and wasn't wearing a surgical mask; his saliva was shiny and crystalline.

"Is the consultation over?" Zou Fuzhuren asked.

"It's over, preparing for Catheter-directed Thrombolysis."

Zou Fuzhuren frowned. His expression was very serious as he pulled a director to stand with his back to the camera.

One couldn't see their lip movements, nor could one hear the sound, but judging by their actions, the two were likely arguing.

The camera faithfully recorded this segment without editing.

As time passed, Zou Fuzhuren's emotions seemed to gradually spiral out of control. It was unclear what he was saying, but saliva was flying everywhere.

"Xiao Ji, did you see the patient?" Li Ming, Li Zhuren, didn't go to break up the fight but instead walked to Ji Xiang's side to ask.

"I've seen them, I think surgery is possible," Ji Xiang answered very calmly.

"Surgery? How do you plan to do it?"

"Isn't Doctor Lin from Massachusetts General Hospital?" Ji Xiang mentioned Lin Jiuze for the first time. "The new type of Thrombectomy Catheter developed by Boston Scientific a few years ago should be able to be used proficiently."

"It can't be done," Lin Jiuze stood in the corner of the crowd and answered softly.

He was always in the corner, always unnoticed.

But as the camera lens shifted, the figures of Lin Jiuze and Ji Xiang appeared in the same field of view for the first time.

"Doctor Lin, hello," Ji Xiang said politely. "The Affiliated Hospital doesn't have the new Thrombectomy Catheter from Bo Ke; can you contact them on your end?"

"Contacting for the catheter is no problem, but the Thrombectomy surgery cannot be performed; there are contraindications," Lin Jiuze replied.

He was not overbearing, yet he was not timid either; his neither humble nor arrogant expression made people feel favorably toward him. Even if Ji Xiang's request encountered a contraindication, highlighting Ji Xiang's ignorance, Lin Jiuze did not speak in a mocking tone.

Furthermore, everything Lin Jiuze said was a fact; both Bai Chuzhang and Liu Zhuren felt that Ji Xiang seemed to be heading for a wall.

It would be fine at his own hospital, but if Ji Xiang were to barely manage to perform the surgery at the Affiliated Hospital, it would cause a major problem!

This...

Bai Chuzhang's brows furrowed tighter and tighter.

If he hadn't just made a phone call to Ji Xiang, he would certainly have thought that Ji Xiang was about to crash and break his head.

He was truly very curious, just how was Ji Xiang going to do it?!

He stared at the screen, watching Ji Xiang quietly. The phase three and four Clinical data of Bo Ke was very detailed; a contraindication was a contraindication, a conclusion reached after being tempered a thousand times.

Could Ji Xiang ignore the contraindication?
