Chapter 598: Defecting to the Other Side
Lin Jiuze seemed to have seen a ghost; his usually calm face displayed expressions of surprise, astonishment, and horror.
"Huh?" Qin Chu let out a sound; his heart pounded faster and faster, and faster still, with intermittent occurrences of bigeminy.
A bad premonition enveloped Qin Chu's entire body, yet he didn't even know what this bad premonition actually was.
He tried his best not to think about the "worst" outcome, but Lin Jiuze's expression and Ji Xiang's persistence were silently telling Qin Chu what the next direction would be.
The camera was outside the ward, not having entered, faithfully recording the fragments of what was happening.
"Director, the Patient is a distant relative of mine, and I contacted their family."
Just then, a voice appeared.
"What?" Fan Dao was both surprised and delighted.
"The family said they can allow the surgery to be recorded, but could we trouble our production crew to pay the medical expenses upfront? The party at fault is very poor and has no money; they've already said they would rather go to jail than have the money to pay the medical expenses."
"How are you talking!" Fan Dao suppressed his volume, "Not just the medical expenses, the post-operative recovery nutrition fees and lost wages must also be paid! If the cooperation is pleasant, I will apply to give them a few tens of thousands of yuan as a labor fee."
"Thank you, Fan Dao." The crew member thanked him.
This segment was not edited out; it was clearly the production crew straightforwardly telling the audience that they had already obtained the recording permission from the Patient and the Family Member.
The camera then approached the ward, but still did not enter, merely standing at the doorway to film, as if someone were standing at the door looking in to see what was happening, giving a sense of voyeurism.
The lens landed on the Patient's leg.
The Patient's right leg gave the cameraman a fright, and the camera visibly shook.
When the Patient's condition had not been seen, everything was speculation; even Bai Chuzhang, Liu Zhuren, Qin Chu, and Ling Tian were only inferring based on their own experience.
But seeing the Patient's right leg, everything had an answer.
Purple-blue, and even mottled, one could tell at a glance that the Patient's right leg had already begun to suffer from ischemia and necrosis.
Time was running out for the Affiliated Hospital.
"The skin temperature is very low; if we don't try, I'm afraid..." Ji Xiang didn't finish stating his worry, because the Zhuren and Experts present all knew what he wanted to say.
Within a few hours, the Patient's right lower limb would become necrotic, and an amputation would be necessary.
"It wasn't this serious just a moment ago," an Expert whispered.
"The condition is progressing very quickly; I suggest we hurry and get to the surgery."
Lin Jiuze said firmly.
"!!!"
"!!!"
"!!!"
Not only the Experts in the ward, but even Qin Chu in front of the screen was stunned; his jaw almost dislocated and fell onto his feet.
Lin Jiuze was defecting to the other side?!
Wasn't the surgery impossible to perform!
"Li Zhuren, would you mind coming on stage to help keep an eye on things?" Lin Jiuze asked calmly.
Li Zhuren nodded, biting the bullet.
He knew very well that Lin Jiuze wanting him on stage was to find someone to take the blame.
Although Lin Jiuze was an Expert from Massachusetts General Hospital, he presumably did not have a domestic Physician Practice Certificate; if one looked into it, practicing medicine domestically was an illegal act.
As for being on stage, he could at most serve as an assistant.
"Doctor Ji Xiang, will you give me a hand?"
"Okay!" Ji Xiang happily agreed.
Li Zhuren wept internally; even being an assistant was a luxury, he could only watch from close range.
In front of the screen.
Liu Zhuren looked puzzled.
"Lao Bai, what's going on?"
"I don't know." Bai Chuzhang was also confused, "Just now, Doctor Lin Jiuze wrote the surgical record for a Thrombectomy on paper; it was very brief, and he changed his mind after looking up."
The more Bai Chuzhang spoke, the quieter his voice became; he already had a conjecture, but this conjecture was so unreasonable, so inconceivable.
It was so absurd that Bai Chuzhang had no confidence at all, to the point that his voice grew quieter and quieter.
"Defying the heavens to change fate?" Ding Xiang asked.
"What?" Liu Zhuren asked, the question slipping out as if he hadn't understood.
"Not defying the heavens to change fate." Bai Chuzhang calmed down, "It's that Lin Jiuze saw the Patient's condition had changed and decided to proceed with the surgery."
Liu Zhuren's eyes rolled, and then he sneered.
"Isn't this just picking the peaches?"
"Picking the peaches?" Bai Chuzhang immediately understood what Liu Zhuren meant; he shook his head but didn't say anything more.
The difficulty of the surgery had not changed; on the contrary, it had increased—that is not how one "picks peaches."
Although that was not what Liu Zhuren meant, continuing to think about it caused Bai Chuzhang's worldview to waver slightly.
The scene flashed to the operating room.
The permission from the Patient and the Family Member was not fake; the production team, in order to save time, had not broadcast the process of negotiating with the Affiliated Hospital's administration.
In any case, the camera crew followed them into the operating room.
Ji Xiang was disinfecting and laying out sterile drapes as usual, performing pre-operative preparations.
Outside the screen, Qin Chu's hand pressed against his chest, as if doing so would make his bigeminy disappear.
"Boss, what is Lin Jiuze thinking?"
"I don't know." Qin Chu watched the screen with a grave expression.
"I've been calling him, but he never picks up." Ling Tian also sensed something unusual and whispered, "Why don't you give Lin Jiuze a call and ask?"
Qin Chu didn't speak; he watched the pad quietly, not knowing what he was thinking.
"The surgery definitely can't be done. I've studied similar procedures; the Guide Wire carries a mesh membrane. When inserting the Guide Wire, the mesh membrane clings to the wall of the wire. Once the Guide Wire penetrates the Thrombosis, it is inflated, and the Thrombosis is pulled out while pressed against the vessel wall."
"The Patient has atherosclerotic plaques in their blood vessels. If too much force is used, it will tear the vessel, and the consequences would be unimaginable."
"What is Lin Jiuze doing?"
The more Ling Tian spoke, the worse Qin Chu's expression became.
No one knew what Lin Jiuze was doing; at the time, all he had to do was use his status as an Expert to give Ji Xiang a good scolding.
Regardless of whether the production team would air that segment, Ji Xiang was definitely going to take a fall. Forget about the center position on the show; Qin Chu had already thought through exactly how to get on stage and disparage Ji Xiang at future academic conferences.
But!
An unexpected turn of events occurred.
Lin Jiuze defected at the last minute and actually wanted to perform the surgery.
Could it be that Ji Xiang had shaken his tiger-like body and unleashed an aura of dominance... Impossible, Qin Chu ruled out that possibility.
This is surgery, not children playing house!
Boston Scientific's phase four Clinical surgery has been performed hundreds of times at Massachusetts General Hospital; how could Lin Jiuze not know that the surgery couldn't be done?
Qin Chu was deeply puzzled, his brows furrowed, staring blankly at Ji Xiang on the screen as he disinfected and laid out the sterile drapes.
Could it be that Ji Xiang knows some kind of sorcery to bewitch people's minds?
Qin Chu recalled when Ji Xiang faced him, he had suddenly lost focus, and in the snap of a finger, months had passed, and he had experienced the entire process of a terminal Cancer Patient from surgery to death.
Had Lin Jiuze also experienced all of this?
Countless questions bubbled up in Qin Chu's heart, but he had no answers.
The next second, the surgery began.
